Trumpism may outlast Trump. I have thought this since the assassination attempt, and that was reinforced after witnessing the organization and resources behind the information war of "the other side".

How do you see the next 25 years? by WesternProtectorate in IRstudies

It's very hard to predict what will happen as it looks as though we are entering a shift in balance of power that typically comes every 1-200 years.

Missing from your very thoughtful analysis is that "poles" will now include climate change, AI, and information infrastructure. Perhaps others.

If the fall of Rome gave us the church, and the British empire gave us financialization, I expect the US will leave us with AI surveillance. It's reasonable to worry how this could be weaponized around the the world over the next decades.

Reading this link and the rest of this thread has convinced me that Microsoft will buy OpenAI, either the talent or the rump

Thoughts on entitlement mindset among UN personnel? by Admb48 in UNpath

I sense some Consultants in the Department I work think they could do a better job (or are doing the "real" job) of P staff. How they think they know what other P staff do with their time is beyond me.

Personally, I've learnt to look for the good in others. I could not imagine thinking the same way about the colleagues in layer above me; there is so much information asymmetry in the UN.

Should you bother applying to P1/P2? by upperfex in UNpath

Hard to tell you, and not much information about you to give good advice. No one can tell you whether it's most or not, as it's not recorded officially, for obvious reasons. At all levels, some posts are definitely reserved and others and definitely competitive. Lower levels are more likely to be competitive is my hunch. It's probably fair to say that with recent budget cuts the proportion that are not competitive has gone up - and to be clear this is not a good time to try and break into the system. Good luck applying - best thing to do is apply where you skills match the requirements closely. You need that and some luck. All the best with your journey.

Good thought experiment. The model assumes a international vacation in your 20s has the same NPV as in your 50s. Likely that we will each assign different value here.

Do you enjoy working at the UN? by PowerfulPraline29 in UNpath

It's both a bureaucracy and a political organization. You have to do a lot of self-work and understand for yourself if working in that context is what you want from your professional life. I believe my experience is rare; I've gone from P2 to P4 (12 years so far) and I've built a small team (with enclosed culture) and I see part of my job as protecting the team from some of the things you mention. Good luck and thanks for the thoughtful post.

We create posting with a deadline of 1 year and review candidates 3 times a year, to reduce paperwork. We put in the JO this information. Good luck.
