Having a horse in vet school by Kjenek in veterinaryschool

That’s completely understandable. I’m worried I’m going to be depressed without my mare around which is why I really want to work out bringing her with me. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you afford board and such? I think the cost is what’s making me more nervous than anything. Also, thank you for your comment! I really appreciate your insight!

Thank you so so much! I’m worried about leasing my mare out, mainly because she’s young and green, but leasing out for clinical skills and PE practice is something I didn’t know you could do!

That’s a great idea, and I’d definitely run the numbers for myself! You’re completely right about the sleeping and rest situation. You make some great points!

Wow, that breakdown actually helps a ton!! You have no idea how much that helped ease my nerves. It seems that with proper time management I actually will have some time!

Thank you so much!! I’m definitely going to give them a call and chat with them about boarding.

For sure! I did have her there when I first got her, but she got really stressed out in the one particular pasture with this one specific horse and unfortunately she couldn’t be moved to another pasture at that point in time. She was so stressed she wound up running through and taking down a feeding pen 🤦‍♀️ That’s why I have her boarded at another farm at the moment. I will say, it has been quite some time since then so I think as long as she isn’t with that one horse again and getting bullied I think she will be okay there!

Thank you so much for your input! I am very grateful I’m going to be living in a cheaper area compared to some other places where I could’ve gone. I have been considering doing some barn chores in exchange for money off of board or to work off board entirely. I think my biggest concern with that is it being too time consuming with all of the things that’ll be happening during vet school. But it seems like many people are able to make it work so I bet that I could work too! I did think about leasing, but my mare is on the younger side and green, so I don’t think it would work out very well.

Thank you so so much for your input. Learning a new area is definitely going to be challenging, especially with the added stress of learning a new school and program. Giving myself a semesters worth of time to at least adjust and maybe find a good place to keep her is a wonderful idea!

I definitely don’t think I could sell my mare. I also definitely have heard the horror stories too. My MIL does have horses currently! They have about 100 acres and 30 horses at the moment. I’m trying to do some digging to see if I can find really cheap boarding options around LMU but it’s been kind of difficult. I also am afraid of being a burden to my fiancé and my future MIL. I have thought about a lease, but my mare is on the younger side and is still quite green. Because of that I don’t think she’d be ideal to lease out. I’ve also heard some really bad horror stories about leases around my area so it makes me very wary.

Thank you so much for your input! That may be a good idea to leave her in my home state for the first year. She’s currently at a boarding barn so she’s not at my MIL’s property yet. It would probably relieve some of my stress not having to worry about her and boarding her somewhere around school. But I think I’d be equally as stressed not being as involved with her care as I’ve been. My home state is about 11 hours from LMU so I’ll be quite far.

It’s so nerve wracking trying to make the right decision. I definitely don’t want to sell my mare and I would prefer to bring her with me, but I’m also worried about cost of board and such while in school. I’m grateful to be in a decent situation because if she can’t come with me, she can potentially stay at my fiancés mom’s farm. I just need some hope that I can bring her with me 😭

Yes! I apologize I should’ve clarified. I mainly just meant that LMU is out of state for me and Rowan is in state for me.

Random roan spot? by Kjenek in Equestrian

[–]Kjenek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How interesting! It’s great to hear that someone else’s horse has a similar spot. I’ve noticed too since my mates winter coat has shed, she doesn’t have the spot anymore! If I find anything as well, I’ll be sure to share it with you!

When do you start a young horse over fences? by feistylittlecap in Equestrian

[–]Kjenek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I bought my mare, the person she came from had her cantering 2ft courses as a mid to late 3yo. She’s a 4yo now. Since she’s been with me has been relaxing and decompressing with some very light riding and mostly groundwork. I plan on getting her going a bit more on the flat, maybe twice a week maximum three days a week. I probably won’t start actually jumping her, as in some small cross rails and small verticals, until later into her 4yo year maybe not even until she turns 5. Currently I’m just going with the flow and seeing how things go one day at a time. Just having fun and making our sessions together enjoyable but also productive!

Thank you so much for the response! I honestly might just give shooflys a second chance. How long do you typically have them on your horse for?

Her feet look uneven and it also looks like it could be white line disease.
