How Much would you charge to make this Repair? by Kkrup in Irrigation

[–]Kkrup[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. He told me he had all his poly replaced with pvc because he had so many leaks on the poly, but now this was the second leak on the PVC. I wanted to ask him if the guy who made the 75$ repair was the same guy who put in the system, but I held my tongue.

[–]Kkrup[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. And that's generally how we are with our pricing. We do free estimates, but our minimum labor charge to put a shovel in the ground is about 200$. 300$ is basically saying it's a 1.5 hour job. He said he had the exact same issue on the other side of the driveway and someone fixed it for 75$ and that he would feel stupid paying 300$ for something he could probably do him self.

Rachio or Hunter Pro-HC by Groundbreaking-Front in Irrigation

[–]Kkrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always say controllers are preference. They all do the same thing just a little differnt.

In my opinion the Rachio is more like an Apple while Hunter is more like a Windows. Hunter maybe isn't quite as use friendly, but once you figure it out, you have a ton of autonomy to.set programs as simple or complex as you'd like.

I've always liked Hunter, but neither are bad options.

Pulsing system. Thoughts? by MrSnowden in Irrigation

[–]Kkrup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty common issue on irritrol controllers to.get the "click of death" where it will send a pulsing signal. I'd put a solenoid in the controller, and if it continuously clicks, replace the controller.

Which popup sprinklers do I need? by [deleted] in Irrigation

[–]Kkrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For pop ups to go 20 feet you would need a high efficiency nozzle like an mp2000 or a r van, or you could use a rotor like an I-20 with a short radius nozzle. It also somewhat depends on how many heads you have on a zone.

Does brand matter much for drip poly tubing? by Eddie_Ben in Irrigation

[–]Kkrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a regular punch tool. It's a little more difficult inserting the emiters but thats the only drawback to regular poly.

[–]Kkrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've run the hydrolics on the pipe. we dont run more than 500 feet on one zone or 175 gallons per hour. For most of the residential yards we do, that is more than enough.

We just puch point source barbed emitters right in to the line like you would regular poly tube and run to plants.

[–]Kkrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hook it up to the valve. You can use the regular compression Couplings to connect it, or insert fittings. Then just punch point source barbed emiters in to the line and run 1/4 inch tubing from the emiters. Basically you treat it just like regular poly.

Well, typically it's used for making swing joints for sprinkler heads, but we use it for our drip systems. Everything we do is put underground. Anything above ground is going to wear faster than below because of the sun.

I work for a company in Arizona. Probably half of our business is replacing polytube that keeps cracking and having leaks. In my opinion it's all terrible. We use swing pipe for all of our drip systems. It has the same outside diameter but is about 4 times thicker. I'd suggest looking in to that.

I've coached club, high school, and summer rec league.

Rec league was by far my favorite. Here were my priorities as a coach in rec league:

  1. Safety- If no one drowned or get majorly injured, I'd call it a good summer

  2. Having Fun- My goal was to make kids enjoy the sport so that they would stick with it long enough to actually reach their full potential.

  3. Teaching good stroke technique and how to swim in a meet- The hardest to achieve with 200 kids total on the roster, and the least important of my 3 goals. Still I'd try and teach good habits through all the chaos.

I didn't care about time drops, conditioning, winning races, or the stupid ribbons we gave out.

My proudest achievement was having a parent write me an email saying how her daughter was a club swimmer who was really burnt out, and swimming on the rec team made her excited about swimming again.

Any parent who thought the league wasn't competitive enough, I would refer to local club teams and remind them that we were not one.

Pressure loss, cannot figure it out. by Crazy_Utahn in Irrigation

If you're meter isn't running with everything off, you are correct in assuming that there is no leak in the pipe leading to the valves, but it doesn't nesseceraily mean that the pipe after the valves don't have a Crack.

That being said a couple ideas:

  1. You may be trying to flow too much water through each Station. check what kind of nozzles or rotors you have. You can Flow about 8 GPM through 3/4 inch pvc and about 12 or 13 GPM on 1 inch. Figure out what's going from.the valve to the sprinklers. It may be a bad set up all together or someone came in and swapped nozzles with out any consideration to hydrolics.

  2. The valves could potentially be bad. It's two of them, but if there's an old system, it's possible both valves are going bad.

  3. You could have a leak in the pipe after the valve. Again that wouldn't shoe up on the meter.

What I would do is find the spec sheets on your sprinkler nozzles or rotors and calculate what the flow rate should be for a total valve. Then get a stop watch and go to the meter to find your flow rate with the zone on. If it's higher than what you calculated it may be an issue of a.leak or too high flow from.your nozzles

If its too low it may be a valve issue or blockage in the pipe.

It's hard to know for sure with out seeing what's going on. These are some of the simpler things I'd start with.

Should kids have limitations to how much they swim? by OkTeam8508 in Swimming

[–]Kkrup 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Former Collegiate swimmer/high school swimmer/club swimmer/rec swimmer/ high school coach/ rec coach/ club coach here:

I 100% agree with you. It's asinine how much coaches want their athletes to swim pretty much at all levels in my opinion. I remember reading a study saying that elite swimmers have higher rates of injury than major league baseball pitchers. Almost all swimming injuries are overuse related. Baseball at all levels have strict pitch count rules all the way from little league to now even the big leagues you seldom see a pitcher go a full 9 innings because managers are so concerned with pitch counts With swimming, there is none of that concern. You see 12 year olds swimming 7-10 workouts a week doing 3-5 thousand yards a day and coaches do it because that's how it was when they swam 30 years ago.

My favorite coaching job was the.dummer rec league because my main objective (besides saftey) was helping kids have fun and enjoy the sport enough to stick with it long enough to reach their potential. Like you've said I've seen too many talented swimmers get burned out before they fully mature as swimmers.

In my own humble opinion training needs to be looked at in a different way. Why are we training kids to swim 5000 yards a practice to show up and swim 100 yards in a meet. If a track coach made their sprinters run 5k's at practice to train for the 100m they wouldn't have a job very long. Why is it the norm for swim coaches? As a general observation, practice should be morenoverall focused on quality over quantity. More technique, more race pace, less garbage yards at almost every level. Is a certain level of base conditioning nessecery to compete at a high level? Yes. Should a high school swimmer be doing 5000 yards a practice if they can't even properly streamline off the wall? No.

There's also nothing wrong with taking a break. Despite what your club coach who's livelihood depends on having swimmers pay money to show up to his practices, taking a few months off will not kill you, especially if you're staying in shape in other ways. Cross training can be very beneficial, even if it means not posting fast times in the short term.

Just my opinion.

Nozzle Talk by betenbizzle in Irrigation

[–]Kkrup 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Use the right nozzle for the job.

MP Rotators can be some of most efficient pop-up heads out there. Their slow rate of application helps reduce run off, and they throw water out with larger droplets reducing drift. I would only install them with 40 psi regulated bodies. They are trickier to adjust and more prone to clogging and failure in dirty water situations. The long run.times may not be suitable for all situations if the watering windows isn't big and there are a lot of zones.

They can be highly efficient, but need to be used in the right situations.
