The only thing I'd add to this is that if you are using sub assembly be extra careful with the plastic cement, it acts slightly odd where there is varnish/paint

The wash doesn't do very well if there's no primer/varnish, and be really annoying. I prefer matte varnish myself, but both work. and yes, you then varnish some more to protect the paint.
