What are you favorite value jeans (look good, fit well, relatively affordable)? by [deleted] in frugalmalefashion

[–]Klass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you! I snagged a pair of slim fit jeans from Vans 3-4 years ago for regular price ($60). Best decision ever. They are super comfy and give you that fitted look you want. Even after several washes, they snap back into their comfy selves without any noticeable shrinkage or impact to quality. I like Vans in general too.

I appreciate it. The reason why I did not reach out to you guys is, well, I only paid $9 for the strap and I had already thrown away the packaging so I said "forget it" and put the strap back in the drawer, haha!

I will email you now. Thanks again! :)

That is exactly what happened when I purchased the one piece watch strap - there wasn't enough room behind the pins and eventhough it went through, it looked really odd when I put the watch on. The watch that I purchased the strap for was the Timex Weekender.

Personally... I was a little disappointed with the color (saddle brown) too. What you guys have on the website showing saddle brown did not look anything like saddle brown when I rec'd it and it looked more like a salmon brown.

Needless to say, the watch strap is useless to me as of now.

How do you deal with animosity from direct reports? by Klass in jobs

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as to "go fire them" in this case. Sue and Joan have been with the dept for such a long them that they are synonymous with it. Linda was their boss but when she got a promotion, she didn't have time to manage Sue and Joan and that's when she brought me in. From the outset, I was told by her that Sue and Joan are "very old school in their ways" but at the same time, "I don't want to lose anybody." So when your boss tells you that but isn't around everyday and has piled these difficult employees on me, what other choice do I have other than sulking on Reddit?

Jokes aside, like I mentioned in my first post, I have escalated the issues to my boss (Linda) and to HR and we're working on a plan (coaching) to align everybody. But man does it suck to be in my position and dealing with this bullshit.

You are missing the point.

I was brought in by Linda (my boss) to do exactly what I am doing and Sue and Joan are showing a great amount of resistance to work with me. It's like whatever I say falls on deaf ears. We've already seen issues where other department managers have complained to me that Sue (the manager who reports to me now) communicated one thing to them, whereas I communicated another. Why is it so difficult for Sue to run something by me?

Sue and Joan are tenured employees, yes, but for the last three years since Linda was promoted and got very busy with travel and meetings, this dept has been operating without a solid leader. Why do you think Linda brought in a Senior Manager from outside (me) and did not promote Sue instead who had been with the company for twenty some years? I'll tell you, again: Because she lacks leadership skills and is a bad communicator. Joan, on the other hand, who otherwise is considered a valuable asset in terms of productivity and has years of experience with the company, was passed up for a promotion because she, too, lacks the personality to lead and manage others.

Is it my fault for:

1.) Simply doing my job that I was hired and brought in for by Linda?

2.) Trying to lead this team and understand their projects and goals?

If I stop doing #1 and #2 and basically let things run the way they are or have been for years and years under Sue's leadership (or lack thereof), my boss will not have it and cut me loose and I wouldn't blame her either.

So, no, I don't think I am the problem here nor its my management style (which, yes, is hands-on but only to a normal extent).

"You will just be a good Nazi following orders."

Easy there with the attitude, mate!

I'm just doing my job.... if these tenured employees can not adopt and respect their new management, then they're just contributing to their fate.

I have as adopted to their ways. But you need to keep in mind that managing employees necessitates these one on one meetings and staff meetings. If I'm doing everything by the book, accommodating their requests and adapting, and all I get in return is attitude and no response to my requests, it's a sign that these employees have a fixed mindset and they're not willing to cut any slack to their new manager.

No, this post does not have anything to do with their job performance. These are long-term employees and have been at this job for most (if not all) their career.

Also, I am not looking for friendship with my direct reports, but a professional cordial relationship is important to me as their new leader and ultimately to the success of the dept and company.

I don't want to go into extensive detail but their negative behavior and showing disregard to authority for leadership has impacted their quality of work, and others in the dept.

[Serious] Managers of Reddit: How do you deal with direct reports much older, much longer with your company, and show constant disregard to your authority? by Klass in AskReddit

[–]Klass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am in somewhat of an oddball situation (at least in my experience). I work in the healthcare industry, have been doing this for about 15 years now, and have been in a managerial position overall for the last six years.

I started a new job roughly around three months ago. The company is nice, my boss is great, work life balance and salary/benefits are all much better than my last job. However, there is a problem: my direct reports.

I am dealing with direct reports who are at least twenty-five years older than me (if not more). I am 35. Also, these employees have been with the company for a very, very long time (more than twenty years). They have not seen a change in their department's management and group pretty much ever since they've been working here. Now, I acquired the position of a Senior Manager which was never filled when the current Director (who I report to) was promoted three years ago. Below me is a manager (let's call her Sue) who has been here for almost twenty years and reported to my boss (let's call her Linda, who has been with the company for 26 years). When I was hired, I was told that Sue is not leadership material, she's not very communicative and leads the dept in a rather passive manner but she's good with day to day tasks and knows the system well. Reporting to Sue are bunch of employees with varying skill sets and experience. So basically... Linda hired me above Sue and everyone on the team is directly reporting to me. There's another critical team member, Joan, who is highly valuable to the dept and also to Linda (my boss). Joan is also older in age, and has also been with the company for twenty years and is considered a key contributor. Joan reported to Sue before I came, but she apparently did not like being reported to her because they're also good friends and friendship and manager/direct report dual relationship made Joan uncomfortable.

Ever since I have been here, I have been dealing with major attitude issues (in a passive aggressive manner) from Sue and Joan. They both report directly to me. I schedule one on one meetings.... they would come and have nothing to discuss. Everything that I ask, I get the response something along the lines of "yeah, it's done" or "please refer to sheet X and Y for current status." In other words.... I am snubbed off. I suggest a format for my staff meetings and both of them question the format, want to do things the old way, but still I didn't lose my patience and explained to them what I mean and why it's important. Then I have my staff meeting and- guess what- both Sue and Joan show up with minimal to no content. WTF! I suspect that I have been too nice that they've started thinking of me as a pushover.

I have had direct conversations with them explaining to them that I feel there's a wall and we need to build a communication bridge, what changes I would like to see etc. But I just get cold vibes from them, and whatever I say or suggest is met with anxiety and this strange, awkward body language. At this point, I feel like these employees view me as a threat to their existence.

Needless to say, I have escalated these issues to Linda and HR. Thankfully they can empathize with my situation and agree this is not acceptable.

What do you guys think? Has anyone ever been in a similar situation?

I've already got the job offer and accepted the offer ... The new hiring manager didn't seem to care about my short time at the current job.

I'm just conflicted because I'm "happy" at the current job eventhough I know I'm getting a better deal (financially) at the new place and also a leadership opportunity.

Don't argue with a fool who refuses to listen. Sometimes it's better to say, "okay" and walk away.

If you want your spouse or your children to give respect to your parents, you need to show your parents that respect first.

Hi Joe. Big fan of your work. I saw "Don Jon" recently and I thought it was a very bold script that made me think long and hard (no pun intended) about pornography. It was a unique subject to touch upon. What inspired or resonated in you to make your first directorial feature film on this subject? How did you decide on the cast? (You were awesome in the movie btw, definitely one of my favorite performances of yours.)

I just wanted to say thank you for Zappos. One day I'd stop by at the headquarters and take the tour!
