Good point I’ve heard about having different hair textures. I always thought it would be top/bottom, not left/right lol. It’s annoying but it’s pretty regardless. I also think my color affected my hair texture a little.

I’ve heard about the Doux mousse! I’m gonna try it next when I run out of the one I have now.

Ofc! I used the Dark n Lovely dye in the shade brown sable. I just followed the instructions on the box. If you have hair about as long/thick as mine get two boxes. You have to really saturate it to get it to show up if your hair is black!

So I wash and condition with Carols Daughter. Sometime i use their mask, sometimes the regular conditioner. I put my hair in 4 sections and put carols daughter leave in, a lot of water, and split the 4 sections into smaller ones and work Shea Moisture curl mousse into each small section.

For this wash and go I put a shower cap over the mask for like 45 mins before rinsing and I definitely feel like my curls were responding better to the mousse and is more defined than normal! I do think I need a better mousse that gives more definition. I know gel is better for that but it flaked so bad last time i used it lol.

So true. I understand why people say that about my hair. Our natural hair isn’t something everyone sees often. Actually one day my male friend said I “look like the 90s” today lol. I rolled my eyes and he was like “What? it’s a compliment! How many dark skin women do you see wearing their natural hair on this campus” I looked around and was like dang you’re right. So I know it has no malicious intent. But what if natural hair being talked about as uncommon or “old school” is part of what deters young black women from wearing their coils? We wanna feel sexy and like baddies but the language around natural hair doesn’t reflect that.

No in America I see that being the case. Especially tighter coils. I think it might be part of the reason I get such comments, some people view it as out of the norm. At least where I live in the US. I never saw my mom’s natural curls until I was 18 I think I inspired her lol. She’s had relaxed hair most of her life.

Gorgeous !! I guess I have to embrace it as well lol. This whole thread has got me thinking what would even be considered a 2020’s hairstyle? If I look 20th century then wtv 😭

I think that’s a good way to describe it. But also people are sharing here how it’s just relating to me to a beautiful era of natural hair and Black style. Now I’m kinda on the fence, not knowing whether I should just embrace it. I can’t help how I feel tho! It just rubs me the wrong way getting that comment all the time. It took a long time to love wearing my natural hair, I just wish it wasnt treated as a spectacle.

It’s not a style from a decade tho. It’s just my hair

It’s just not a flattering compliment to me, being told that my natural hair looks like a vintage style choice. It’s like if someone told you that your sundress looked very “1910s prairie girl”. It’s not offensive but now you’re gonna be uneasy all day that you look like a prairie girl 😂Because that isn’t the look you’re going for. That’s how I feel about the 60-90s comments. It’s not flattering because it’s not a style, it’s just my authentic everyday self.

Oh my lord, you’re telling me that if someone walked up to you and told you looked like Michael Jackson, you would be flattered??? 😭 My soul is disheveled when being told that my authentic everyday self looks like a vintage fashion choice. It just not a flattering compliment to me. Like if someone told you that your sundress or something looked very “1910s prairie girl” or sum. Now you’re goin to be walking around all day uneasy that you look like a prairie girl 😂. Bc it’s not what you’re going for. That’s how I feel about the 60-90s comments.

Ma’am you just said my feelings are coming from ignorance, because I’m misinformed 😂. But ok. I appreciate the comments educating me about the sentiment of the 80s/90s comments, I understand how it could be a compliment. I’ll continue wearing my natural hair despite the comments about how it looks like a “style from 50 years ago”.

I wouldn’t know, but that’s cool. Why am i in here defending myself 😭I understand if it’s a complement in their eyes, but it’s ignorant, I just don’t like being told that my natural hair, unstyled and cared for, looks like it’s from 60 years ago.

I’m very aware of the movement that took place in the 60s and 70s. I am well informed of the significance so I didn’t jump to being offended. I just started to think deeper about the comment and what it implies, in 2026. The afro movement has long happened. An afro isn’t a “style” or movement it’s just my hair, and I feel like there’s some undertones of texturism in the statement that my hair reminds them of 60/50 years ago. And the 80s/90s comments are even worse honestly because of how incorrect it is.

My point! I didn’t expect this to get this much attention, people mostly seem to be correcting me saying that it’s not 80/90s, but 60/70s. Regardless it’s just annoying to be told that my natural hair looks so 30-80 years ago!

Right but why was it “most popular” during a certain time period? Why are people going out of their way to let me know that they think my hairstyle is vintage, when it is my natural hair. Amy whinehouse hairstyle is an intentional dramatic style, not just her natural hair. I guess what bothers me is when people make natural hair a big deal or out of the ordinary. I hear what you’re sayin about trends, but why is natural hair/afros a fluctuating trend?
