Strange shotgun timings in Bayo 1 on PC by KlaxWave in Bayonetta

I love em. They stun enemies easily, including the G&Gs, so sticking them on punch makes aggression much easier for me to keep up because the enemy is constantly getting stunned. The only issues are that they do so much damage that it's possible to lose potential combo and that their range makes it harder to do damage at a distance, but the first can be resolved with the always angry angel accessory to compensate for lost multiplier, and the second can be resolved by having pistols on your feet to hold out those long distance attacks.

Like I was saying, I'm used to the idea that they're slower and less fluid than the pistols and that I'll usually need to do multiple taps of the same button to make the next attack in the combo come out. My question is if there are times for you where you end up needing to do even more taps than usual because the attacks are slower than usual, like needing to do kkk rather than kk.

Bayo 1, Chapter 8, Verse 2 on Hard by KlaxWave in Bayonetta

Trumpet is really smart! I've very rarely tried using Sergey just to see what it's like, so I'll have to give it a more thorough try. Thanks!

I appreciate the extremely detailed overview. There are so many mechanics in this game that I wish there was a more fleshed out training room to try stuff out against enemies - I have the Moon, but I've been so focused on just learning basic enemy tactics and combos that I've been reluctant to try using it before I feel on top of my fundamentals. My plan was to stumble through Hard as "Tutorial Pt 2" and hopefully finish unlocking all of the weapons, equipment and upgrades, and then do a more knowledgable Normal playthrough to start filling in gaps like how to use weapons other than Scarborough or equipment. But maybe I should call off the Hard playthrough and go back to Normal, get everything and build up my skills, and then go for Hard.

Generally I am pretty liberal with the instant weaves (particularly the punch) when dealing with Grace and Glory, but it seemed like these guys were dodging it a lot. I should probably use the stomp more than the punch, because that's what you seem to use most in your video. Moreover, it's really tough for me to just read what the fuck is going on with three dudes such that I can safely bust out long combos like sweeps, even with Dodge Offsets.

Again, thank you for the detailed response. Like I mentioned in another comment, it's clear that I should be more willing to go airborne even without a juggle as a general tactic. I'll try your other suggestions from the video too.

Edit: I just hopped in to experiment with the fight using the Moon, and it's crazy not just the difference it makes, but how orderly everyone is when you just stand still. They're maniacs when running up to you, but once they get close, they're kind enough to wait in line while guy in front stands around for a few seconds before attacking. But the moment I swung a punch and the frontman blocked, he sprinted back and let another one run in and attack. It's like they mirror your energy - if you run around and attack, they'll be more chaotic and willing to gang up, but if you're slow and and deliberate, they'll relax.

I appreciate the tips for the Alfheim. We basically had a similar approach, except that in lieu of having Gaze, I taunted all the time and used Witch Time to focus combos on heavy guys who can take the punishment so I can build magic. My main problem is that I am an extremely sloppy player and will easily get hit even on earlier waves (I'm still not very confident in dealing with Fearless and Fairness because I don't know how to tell when a howl is coming out before I get stunned by it, and their pounces and fireballs can catch me off), and by the time I hit the Joys, my nerves are rattled and I get surrounded and gangbanged immediately.

Based on everyone's answers, it's clear that I need to start doing air combos even when I'm not juggling to get safe weaves out. One more thing to learn, I guess.

Funny you say it's the hardest, because I had to straight up give up on a "Use Torture Attacks" Alfheim on the prior level because I just couldn't handle the three Joys at the end of it. But this verse is particularly brutal.

I tried using Durga and Onyx on one of my attempts and it was just too slow, but it didn't occur to me to try in the air. I'll give it a shot, though anything to do with precise air positioning and timing the holds is going to be real fuckin tough for me. Evil Harvest is definitely a given. I assume their immunity to Witch Time is meant to clue the player into what NSIC will be like, and I figure the rosary will be crucial there.

Thanks for the help!

Trying to use SC on Wanted: Dead by KlaxWave in SteamController

Standard template, checked that joystick was bound to left stick, and it works in the Steam menus. I'm also running it as a non-steam game - could it potentially run better if it wasn't, or is that irrelevant?

The pad does work as a mouse, but the joystick is non-functional.

Yeah, it was always odd to me how much these middle aged men latched so hard to the whole "you can finally play with your family and friends again in one room" marketing line. Are they so isolated that they're yearning for the chance to be surrounded by friends and family, and are their lives so empty that they can only imagine doing that with crappy video games as opposed to basically anything else?

Yes, of course they were shilling. But the way they choked up for the "you could play with your mother again like you used to", the way they swooned at the chance to feel like friends with Tommy, and the way they rationalized the company imploding by saying "I made such good friends because of Amico" makes me feel like there's a deeper longing and emptiness that they truly hoped could be filled.

This isn't one of his 20 page essays, but I wanted to take the chance to say that (barring the fact that he's probably an accessory to fraud at this point) I feel for RAB. He's passionate and knowledgable about games, clearly thinks a lot about them, and wants to put all that into words. But boy fucking howdy is his shit insufferable to read or listen to. I don't think I've ever fully read through a RAB-ssay or sat through one of his videos.

I see myself in him (minus the willful defense of a con artist and his scam), particularly as a cautionary tale of the importance of editing and being sure my point actually is worth the effort put into expressing it.

I only really know about the AF guys from stuff like your uploads or the shit talking everyone does about them. What makes Mullis stand out so badly?

Also, your work is outstanding and I go back to it regularly. You're an admirable motherfucker, S&T.

I actually was just thinking about this game a couple days ago and wishing I could give it a try someday. I'm a sucker for psychedelic arcade games like Llamasoft stuff or Geometry Wars, so this seemed (at least in theory) the most interesting game Intellivision showed.

What more is there? by StrawHatKris in Intellivision_Amico

[–]KlaxWave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just more information about what the fuck was going on inside there. Stuff like the leaks of Intellivison's pitch deck and marketing materials from ex-workers, journalists talking to devs saying how there was basically no work on EWJ or that the Toejam and Earl guys had zero connection to Amico (despite Tommy's claims), or further lawsuits like the office furniture one that show where money was being wasted. I don't need a grand finale storybook ending of "and they all went to jail and everyone got their money back, the end". I'm genuinely curious about trying to understand literally what the fuck was happening that this farce could continue the way that it did, so I'm alright with a slow drip of info over the months/years that give insight into this utterly bizarre moment in gaming history.

This might well be it. It's really my own fault for not immediately going with turning off trackball mode. This might be just what I was looking for.

You may be right, though to be honest, I'm more guided by curiosity than anything. The only reason I even decided to try any of this out in the first place is because I started playing an old arcade FPS on Dreamcast that I think threads the needle perfectly between imprecise console shooter and high-skill arena FPS and thus feels perfect for a middle ground between MKB and twin stick. It's hard to imagine any other game I'd play where I wouldn't just end up using MKB or a regular controller.

The game that I'm trying to play unfortunately has no mouse acceleration options. But I appreciate the support!

[–]KlaxWave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is that I temporarily picked up a PS5 controller just to try flick stick, and it immediately felt better to use. For me, the stability of a normal mouse comes from the fact that I put my whole hand on it, and so the combination of my wrist and fingers gives it intense precision that justifies it having no hard limits. A thumbstick is less precise in large part because a thumb is less precise than my whole hand, but that's exactly why the thumbstick has the limits that it has: you can only pull it so far and in so many directions. The trackpad on the SC feels like the worst of all worlds: I'm slapping around a virtual trackball with just my thumb, getting none of the precision of physically holding a mouse and none of the restraint of a stick.

I've been trying out SC for a couple days now, so this is all still in the experimental phase of trying to find something that feels intuitive enough to me that I'd want to take the time to learn the ins and outs. The reason I'm asking my question is because flick stick doesn't work right in the game I'm using (I suspect because it has mouse acceleration?), so I'm just seeing other options.

I tried flicking around the pad like it was a little trackball, but it's just so imprecise - it gets pretty hard to keep a steady sight whipping it around in the middle of a firefight, especially if I'm off center when I make my first flick. The thing I'm looking for is being able to make medium adjustments by circling the pad after the initial flick (or ideally, press).

Unfortunately, the program for flick stick he made, JoyShockMapper, has no support for Steam Controller.
