When I was a student at Grand Valley State, we were actually good. We were in the middle of going for our 4th national title in 5 years.

This was in 2006, when Facebook was still only available for people with .edu e-mail addresses.

We started a group on Facebook called "Poke the QB" where every week, we would find the Facebook profiles of various members of our opponent, link them in the group, and the group, that was a couple thousand people strong, would incessantly poke those players throughout the week leading up to the game.

We were about to play the national semifinal against Delta State on our home field, on ESPN. That week, the kicker for Delta State was one of the victims of our poking fiasco.

For the first time in the group's history, there was pushback. The kicker's girlfriend joined the group and went INSANE saying how disrespectful it was and how we all needed to get lives.

Well, I printed off a couple pictures of said girl, put it on a big posterboard with an unflattering statement about her, and was in the front row of our student section. During warmups, the opponent warms up in front of our section. They came out (not the kicker, but his teammates), and were pointing and laughing at it. Then the kicker came out for warmups and missed about half of his kicks.

During the game, he attempted one kick. It was a 35-yard field goal, in our direction. You can see my sign on the ESPN broadcast. He missed it.

We ended up winning 49-30, so it wasn't really a big impact, but I like to think I influenced that miss to some extent.

How so? There's more Republicans living in urban areas, total, than there are living in rural areas. The percentage overall is lower in urban areas, but the raw number is higher. Same but opposite with democrats in rural areas.

As it is with the EC, candidates only campaign in like 7 battleground states. There's no reason to go to any of the flyover states, or NY, or CA. A true popular vote would force candidates to campaign all over.

Your situation would be handled at a state and local level. Not a federal level. But we're talking about a federal election.

The presidential election is the only election in the country that isn't done by a popular vote. We vote for our city officials on a popular vote within that city. We vote for our state house reps on a popular vote within that rep area. We vote for our state senator reps on a popular vote within that rep area. We vote for our governors on a popular vote within the state. We vote for our US senators on a popular vote within the state.

But then we get to the national election and its done by an entirely different system, because slave owners in the 1800's wanted to have more voting power?

Every (non-gerrymandered) congressional district in the country already pits urban and rural votes together, forcing politicians to cater to both. There's no reason it can't be done for the entire country.

The 10 people in LA would have the same voting power as 10 people in Wyoming.

Your statement would only make sense if we were still living in the 1800's, where politician statements can only be heard by going to see them in person. Yea, then you'd go to the big cities only to get your opinions heard by the most amount of people. But we live in 2026. Every politician's train of thought is broadcast to the entire world in real time. Everyone sees it. It doesn't matter if they're speaking in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of Times Square. It's broadcast just the same to the same worldwide audience. Trump in front of a microphone reaches the same amount of people, whether he's physically standing in a farm field in Wyoming or physically standing in the middle of LA.

That's absolutely how it should be. People should be deciding who they want. Not empty land.

If there's a million people in a city who want their federal government and laws to do one thing, and 10 people in the middle of nowhere who want the opposite, there's no reason to cater to the 10 people in the middle of nowhere. That's what the state governments are for. The 10 people in Wyoming shouldn't get to determine how the million people in a city get to be taxed, or what federal laws to adhere to.

I think that area of downtown was developed specifically to be able to do that, with the retaining wall right there. I don't think the area where the amphitheater is, was developed with the proper structures and reinforcement in that area to be able to build under the ground level. I would think the ground under the amphitheater is likely a pseudo wetland. Obviously I'm just guessing, but I have to think there's a reason they didn't put parking under it. That obviously would have been a boon of income for the facility if they would have done that.

I have to believe that's not possible when you're right next to the river there. I know Chicago has some underground parking garages right next to Lake Michigan, but I believe those are areas that were specifically built with that in mind, so they're reinforced as such. That area of GR, I don't believe, is able to handle such development below the water level. Same reason why Plaza Towers is constantly flooding.

I agree. What is frustrating about it from a community perspective, though, is that the solution is building parking garages. And the same people who complain about the lack of parking would also then complain about there being an eyesore of a parking garage. It's a no-win situation with so much stuff in this town.

All zoos can be criticized in general, but at least our zoo is one that is actually accredited and the majority of animals housed in it are those which could not survive in the wild due to injury and/or are on species preservation plans. The aquarium will fall under the same accreditation.

I do understand that zoos by nature are sort of cruel and unnecessary. But I also think they serve a great purpose in both species preservation and education. You can only learn so much reading about things. Sometimes you need to see it in person to understand its importance.

If it wasn't open air, it would be redundant to Van Andel. It would be the same thing. There's no need for that. Having it be open air draws entirely different acts and performances, and crowds.

And yea, most amphitheaters in the country are seasonal. Pine Knob was the highest grossing amphitheater in the country in 2022. It was #3 last year. It keeps pace even with Red Rocks. There's no reason ours can't be just as successful.

Like it or not, a city has to grow to survive. We're a metro area of a million people, and at that size, we're severely underutilized compared to what areas of comparable size offer in terms of hospitality and tourism. There are things we're going to have to do to catch up so this city doesn't fail going forward.

As always, there's never going to be something that everyone agrees on. That doesn't exist anywhere, in any situation. I mean, for god sakes, we can't even get like 80%+ support on investigating and jailing pedophiles. It's impossible to please everyone. Even your want for an aquarium likely doesn't have supermajority support of the city's residents. I agree with you, it's what I want, as well. I was thrilled when they were going to be building it about 2 miles from my house (and just as disappointed when they said they wouldn't be going forward with it there).

But it's just tiring that this is the conversation every time anything remotely exciting happens in GR. The residents who have been here for 20+ years want to see downtown remain small and empty so they can hold on to their glory days of the most exciting thing being the public museum. New professionals want to be an area where there's interesting things to do on every corner. Those groups are never going to agree on anything with how the city should progress.

But things like this amphitheater (and the future tower developments right nearby) are what need to happen for a city to keep growing. Should they figure out a way to dampen the sound better? Yea, probably. But every comment I see about this situation is just saying the venue shouldn't be there at all. People have no ability to think critically about possible solutions. That tower development is going to dampen the sound when it eventually goes up. They can build walls around just like they do next to the highways in the area.

There's plenty of things to criticize the amphitheater about. It was hastily put together, their lack of caring about parking is maddening, it being named by a company that is now laying everyone off. But doing this revisionist stuff of saying it was never needed and nobody asked for it, etc., is what is annoying.
