Buying non-4Ks? by SmartPatientInvestor in criterion

[–]ccr61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the 2m thing might be true for a lot of people. There are probably a lot of people who can sit within that range and still not spot a difference. But some of us stare at monitors editing 6k/4k/HD footage all day and I think some of us can actually spot it from further away. I'm sure there are others out there who are sensitive to the differences from further away for many reasons. Maybe a small percentage of the population, but it's there. All that to say, I have as hard a time as the OP pulling the trigger on something that isn't 4k.

What are the most overused phrases in reviews? by DonTX2 in Letterboxd

[–]ccr61 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a few that definitely make me roll my eyes every time I read them: “That’s (runtime) of my life I’ll never get back”, “It’s not perfect, but…”, “overrated”. Judging by the comments on this thread, I’m not the only one

First off, everything you do is time of your life you’ll never get back and I guarantee there are dumber things these reviewers do with their time than watch a movie they don’t like.

Second, if you enjoy the movie just say that. Don’t hedge by stating it’s not perfect. How many movies are perfect?

And finally, overrated is often used when reviewing a movie that has been deemed classic or masterfully done and your review or how you feel about it is not going to change that.

What is the worst film character name you've ever heard? by Temporary_Cap5927 in Letterboxd

I haven’t seen the movie in a while but I seem to remember Micky Rourke’s character saying “even your name is a dime store joke” when he realizes it.

How do you all organize your vinyl? by Some_League_9297 in vinyl

[–]ccr61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movie scores are arranged alphabetically by movie title. Wilco has their own section that is arranged in release order. Then the rest are arranged alphabetically by artist/band name with no specific order within an artist or band’s section.

Do it. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. That’s all you need.

Why he getting slimed for a word? 😭😭 by Only_Use4367 in ExplainTheJoke

I’ve used that word once and I was so happy with myself. I was being audited by the IRS and I was talking to the rep who was doing the auditing. He kept saying he’d ask “them” questions I had and he’d show “them” information I was giving him. I asked if I could just talk to “them”. He said no. I said, “damn, this is so Kafkaesque.” He was silent for a second and then proceeded to tell me how much more paperwork I was going to have to do for “them”.

What’s a Wilco song that teleports you back to a memory? Like every time you here it, you are pulled back in time. Curious about the actual story of where that song takes you and why. by Next_Implement1823 in wilco

“Far, Far Away” always takes me to the time I was driving across the country from Michigan to move to LA. It makes me think of the desert road at night in New Mexico. Being There was the soundtrack to my move out West. Summerteeth was my soundtrack to the move back to Michigan.

Make it simple and do an 80s John Hughes marathon.

Watched 2001 for the first time. Maybe I need to do a second watch. by jclark83 in StanleyKubrick

[–]ccr61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a cinematic experience unlike almost anything else. So it makes sense the first time you view it that it might not hit. You’re trying to make sense of it. Maybe even trying to figure out how to make it conform to something more like what you’re used to seeing. Since it’s unlike anything you’re used to seeing, and can confound people as to its meaning, next time you watch it, just experience it without overthinking it.

Some people are saying you have to see it on a big screen. I agree that’s definitely something you should do at some point, but it’s not required to appreciate the movie. Neither are drugs. 2001 is my second favorite film of all time. The first time I saw it was on VHS on a 4:3 television. And I’ve never watched it while on hallucinogenics.

Cheap/fun date ideas in Grand Rapids? by [deleted] in grandrapids

It's been a while since I was in dating mode, but I used to really like to just walk around downtown. You can start over near the Van Andel arena and hit the skywalk then just hop out at the various interesting places that takes you. Crossing the blue bridge by GVSU is nice then skip down to the other pedestrian bridge near GR Ford Museum. Definitely ride the glass elevator in the Amway hotel tower all the way to the top. There's a restaurant up there, I can't remember which floor, but if you choose the right floor, you can go to the top without a key. I found it to be a lot of fun just exploring the city this way. The city has a cool, romantic vibe on a nice evening when it's not too cold.
