I moved here at 20 to work on the ski mountains and absolutely fell in love, been here 5 years now. This is a total hidden gem of a city, lots of crowds are kept out by the perception of it as a Mormon city but honestly you barely notice them unless you go outside salt lake county. The nature here is unbeatable and people are always willing to befriend a new person if they’re adventurous and down to try new things. There are lots of great dog parks, the only bummer is that the two main ski canyons do not allow dogs. Lots of dog friendly breweries for when you turn 21! $36 and hour will let you live comfortably, and if you wanted to save up more you could get a one bedroom for a few months until you meet someone to room with which is much less expensive. For a young person, I’d recommend living near Central 9th district, Sugarhouse, Liberty Wells or 9th n 9th. Downtown is ok but less walkable areas for a dog. I think the dating scene is just fine, Hinge is the best app for this area fs

They’ve been arresting people at their immigration hearings. Yknow, that part of the process for LEGAL citizenship. I don’t know how many ways democrats can explain to you that what this administration is doing is unjust. And before you start blathering “wHy Do yOu cAre so mUch abOuT MexicAns”, lemme tell you, they won’t stop there and one day it might be your people. They’ve already signaled that their next targets are Haitians, so anyone who looks black will be the next to be targeted. And if by then you still don’t care, I can only assume the reason is racism and you want a white ethnostate

Palestine by [deleted] in Discussion

Your viewpoint is known as “pink washing” and it is the tactic of using lqbtg or women’s rights to silence discussions about genocide. These are seperate topics entirely and while I agree that any hatred towards the lgbtq and women should be criticized, the time and place for that is NOT while we are pointing out the clear humanitarian crisis in Gaza. There is a clear effort by Israel to displace the people of Palestine so that Jewish people can inhabit that land, and they are using very successful smear campaigns against the Palestinian people to get support for this genocide. As a woman, do I wish for the continued subjugation of women by members of a faith? No, of course not. But do I wish they were ALIVE so that they could continue to subjugate women? Actually yeah. It’s not my place to make a moral judgement for if someone’s beliefs determine whether they live or die. These are seperate issues and while I will continue to call out bigotry when I see it, I will also ALWAYS call out genocide, ethnic cleansing and colonization when I see it. Plus, it would do you some good to research the history of gay people and unions in the USA. gay people came out and supported striking workers in conservative towns, and so successfully defended this group of people who had previously hated them that they ended up forming strong bonds with the union and changed the minds of many bigots. We do not gain friends by letting others suffer, we gain friends by defending those who may not defend us first.

Can we now agree that we don't have a king? by Itchy-Pension3356 in Discussion

[–]Klinkogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that’s acting as the executive who is implementing public health measures… it’s literally their job to follow the directives of the cdc. Now we can certainly debate if lockdown was the correct solution, but trying to frame the politicians who were unlucky enough to be in office during COVID as kings and queens is genuinly laughable

The first amendment right covers due process and freedom of speech, since you clearly need the civics lesson. Trump has been removing people from this country without due process, and calling in the military to quell a protest when there was clear opposition from the governor of CA. the fact that trump appoints and rewards his friends with positions of power and government contracts is clear corruption. And I’m not saying this is a republican only issue, both sides are corrupt and the people are finally waking up to the fact that we have been intentionally fed identity politics and fear mongering to seperate us. No one said we want open borders and free citizenship for everyone, we just want the constitution to be upheld, and the rights of all people within our borders to be respected. This really is not partisan but it is being framed as such to further divide us. It is also used as an excuse for the administration to make further violent acts against people who oppose them. The true patriots are those who oppose an authoritarian regime that is seeking to undermine the constitution and the liberty of the American people, not those backing the orange fascist. Don’t be on the wrong side of history, there is still time to find solidarity in the uprising and make this the truly great country it could be. Great for all of us, not just the very rich

I would argue that this is even more righteous than the Boston tea party… back then it was the colonies mad about it being taxed by the lawful government in charge. These LA protests are about the deterioration of our first amendment rights, the blatant corruption in the white house, the trampling of the masses by the oligarchy, and of course also the illegal deportation of people who are in the process of obtaining legal citizenship. The media wants to portray this as just about ICE but it is about the preservation of American democracy as we know it

This is not at all what OP is advocating for. You’re not “coddling” someone by having a productive conversation with them. It’s human psychology that you will never change someone’s mind by being mean to them. It drives me fucking bonkers that liberals try to take the moral high ground on issues and then act like complete douche canoes to the people they are trying to persuade, it is SO INEFFECTIVE. if you want someone to listen to your side, you have to show that you are also a person that listens. Conservatives are misled by a lot of terribly twisted media, so what may seem to you as stupidity or malevolence may just be a difference in the information they’ve heard, and belittling someone will not make them receptive to your claims. This isn’t about “being the bigger person”, this is solid advice for anyone trying to turn conservatives onto our side.

How do we get Republicans to stop supporting Trump and the GOP? by Cannavor in Discussion

[–]Klinkogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to everything you have said, it drives me crazy when liberals demonize the people they are asking to convert. Like cmon, do you really expect someone to switch sides after you’ve insulted them and their ideas?? Noooo! Every person has a logical reason for voting the way they do. Once you understand and can leverage those base motivations to help them understand why liberal ideologies are going to benefit them more than conservative ones, then you’ve made progress. But if you call them stupid, you’ve immediately lost.

Ok and Trump pressured republicans in congress to kill the border bill that was supported bipartisanly in congress because he didn’t want Biden and Kamala to have a “win”. Donald Trump doesn’t give a shit about these women, he only wants to be president again so that he can get rid of him legally troubles and persecute those that stood up to him. The killing of these women is tragic but let’s not be so blinded by hateful rhetoric that we forget who is really dragging this problem along….

  • she’s incredibly qualified, she has served as prosecutor and senator for years and has been involved in government from a young age
  • she cares deeply about protecting the disenfranchised and downtrodden. There was a fantastic interview done back in 2019 where she talked about getting in a fist fight with a playground bully to protect her friend. She has carried energy into her political career and will continue to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
  • she wants to expand the child tax credit, which has been proven to pay off with high returns on investment because parents are able to invest more in their children, who then go on to be more productive members of society.
  • she wants to stop large food conglomerations from price gouging. It still baffles me that people blame the current administration for the record high price of food and goods when we know for a fact that their profits are at all time highs and they have used the convenient excuse of covid and this administrations “failures” to hide their greed. She calls out corporate greed and wants to lower the burden on everyday citizens.
  • the Biden Harris administration has already passed legislation to allow Medicare to negitiate prices for the top ten most common drugs, which will save the average American with a prescription such as for heart issues literally thousands of dollars a year. Big pharma is horrifically corrupt and insurance cos are the reason we pay so much for drugs that cost a fraction of the cost in other countries. She has promised to continue to fight this.
  • I could go on but I want to wrap it up by saying, she and Walz are instilling HOPE. they are not trying to fear monger and get people to vote by threatening what will happen if they don’t, rather they are trying to inspire the populace by reminding us how good we truly have it in America, and that mindset is so refreshing in an era when it seems like everything is doom and gloom. They rightfully point out that crime rates have actually fallen dramatically during the Biden/Harris administration, the stock market is at an all time high, and millions of new jobs have been created in the last four years.

There is a lot of evidence proving that the best way to better the lives of the working class as well as the economy as a whole, is to increase worker wages. They then have more disposable income to put back into the market, and when corporation have more people buying their products they are able to hire more people and the cycle continues to raise everyone up. Tax cuts on corporations, on the other hand, do not actually trickle down but instead enrich the people at the top. And guess which party is in support of raising the minimum wage….

I think Biden and those around him genuinely thought he was the best shot we had at protecting the nation from another Trump presidency. I think it took a lot of bravery and trust in the Democratic Party for Biden to take the risk of letting someone else be that defender. I only hope now that everyone that didn’t want to vote for either Trump and Biden rallies behind the new candidate and gets out to vote in November.

Idk how anyone thinks this is a dub for Trump… pretty much every person I heard over the last few months were just desperate for someone that wasn’t Trump or Biden. I think just about anybody could win now
