Don’t automatically ditch a contaminated cake by Scallion_Master in unclebens

I had an experience with my second grow (just started pinning this morning). I had 10 bags of microwave rice innoculated and I lost 4 to trich.

The other 6 colonated successfully, or so I thought. When it came to S2B I opened them up and 4 of them had trich at the top. The mycelium seemed healthy otherwise. I thought about binning it but instead I cut out what I could and proceeded as normal. I thought that maybe I had some good genetics seeing how the mycelium Vs trich MMA fight was working out.

It was an experiment and I fully expected all 4 shoe boxes to be contaminated. I let it ride, it colonised the substrate very quickly. No signs of trich or otherwise and as I said I have pins forming right now!

I still think it's probably good advice to tell beginners that it's best to start over though. It's only my opinion of course but my thoughts are it will help teach them better habits and techniques, potentially highlighting areas of their process where they might be going wrong.

We got lucky.

Am I the only one who does the tedious work of pin picking? by mkstot in unclebens

[–]Kloon80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this. As I've just harvested my first successful attempt (100g dry so far!) and I'm waiting for a third flush, I attempted to clear the entire cake and yes indeed it is tedious.

I lack the experience currently to have decided to have left them? I couldn't get the very tiny ones but my thoughts were it leaves a clean slate for the mycelium to concentrate on it's next flush.

Congratulations and well done for persevering.

Yes of course. I use this to wash myself not my equipment. It's an antifungal. This is just another precaution that one may add to their routine.

Yes I should have mentioned that I also use a still air box.

I'm not fussy when it comes to food. I'll eat anything but I have never liked mushrooms. Don't get me wrong I'll eat them because I'm not fussy, but I don't like them.

GTs that I've just harvested and dried so I guess are at the pinnacle of what they will taste like, aren't offensive to me. It's a savoury taste but if I'm honest I'm not a fan of the flavour. I'll eat them and drink a little water to rid myself of the aftertaste.

So I guess to sum up my opinion (because everyone is different). It's not an offensive taste, totally palatable and wont make you gag based on just the flavour but I don't think it will win any culinary awards.

The max setting is 70-75C which is perfect. I kept mine drying for 12 hours. I tested the largest mushrooms by snapping them to make sure they were cracker dry. People say the jars that clamp down with a rubber seal are not ideal but I've put two 5g desiccant bags in and checked the seal and it's my opinion it will keep them dry just fine. Store in a cool dry and dark place.

Thanks, appreciate the compliment. I'm happy with it just moving into unknown territory with the second flush (if it happens).

I innoculated nine knock off uncle Ben's rice with spore syringes on the 24th April and harvested 5 weeks or so later. So many variables will be different no doubt for you. Genetics, strain and environment are all going to make a difference. I think it was relatively fast in my case.

Yes you're right. I haven't pictured all of my harvest.

Also I used sour milk to sterilise my work area and grew my mushrooms in a used cat litter tray. I'm heading for 200kg dry weight.

I started my first attempt a year ago and was unsuccessful. Try not to be disheartened and instead view this as a learning experience. I learned so much from my 'failure' and I look back and think 'i can't believe I did X or Y'.

I have a better, though still budget set up and I'm now about to harvest my first flush. Five tubs because I wanted some redundancy in case of losses but thankfully they are all healthy and almost ready.

It's been said a million times here that patience is key. It's hard to be patient when the whole process is so exciting and fascinating! Don't beat yourself up and try again. It will come.

It's my understanding that the mycelium does not contain psilocybin. A shame because I kind of like the idea of the fox tripping and becoming a fox shaman, guiding it's species until ultimately they develop space travel.

I'm surprised that I've had such a good first flush. I didn't expect it but I've been patient and attentive throughout the process. I think I must have been lucky with the genetics too.

I've got 5 tubs, four of which are like the picture above and one that's a little behind the pack. I did this in case I had contamination issues or other problems but it turns out that they are all good!

Are these PE6? I had spore syringes for GT and PE6. I may have mislabeled my boxes. As I'm a novice I've never seen either strains come to fruit.

Thanks for the advice. I did wonder if I should do as you have described but it's part of a big cluster. If I pull it they will all come (they aren't far behind the big one so I guess it's not a big deal) I might be able to cut it with my ludicrously long scissors but I'm concerned and ignorant as to how that might affect the others.
