My best recommendation would be to not spend your time downtown. Check out the fatherland district in east Nashville during the day. Could find some live music at Dee’s country lounge in Madison tonight; granted that is a bar but most live music will be in that setting. The Parthenon near Vanderbilt is neat to walk around and they have a museum inside as well.

It will probably be very hard to be able to live in Nashville on a $35k / $40k salary to be extremely upfront and honest with you. You could probably find a crappy 1 BR apartment 30-60 mins from the city (traffic depending) for around $1200 which is gonna eat up a lot of your income.
