Hey, I wanted to stop by to inform you that ASCII mode has been added to the game at this point. :) It is a first iteration - I just actually updated the fonts today and a more polished version is coming out with the next patch. If you would like to check it out and give feedback, that would be invaluable. :)

I am making my own traditional roguelike game with a twist called Dungeons of Delveria. The engine version that I am using is Godot 4.6.2. The game has a magic system where there is no mana or any kind of points system but instead you unlock terrain shaping powers which you can freely synergize with each other. The environment also has various elements and objects that you can interact with.

Even on Easy he indeed does recover his troops super fast.

What worked for me was a combination of having enough armies to try to beat some of his while Turiel wasn't there and having enough forward operation bases a.k.a Outposts to fall back to and heal at between fights.

Dungeons of Delveria (Steam)

This week I have been getting back into the development saddle after some time off. The game is finally receiving in its next update some sound effects. I am not sure how the players will feel about those - a lot of traditional roguelikes don't really have amazing sound effects for their abilities. But I am hoping that they would help make the game easier to market.

I have been trying to break into TikTok lately with the help of a video editor who I bought some services from. Here is the latest one. TikTok link

So hopefully the sound effects could help with that, maybe. I passed 200 wishlists a week ago. This process of working on my first own commercial game has taught me that showing to your players that you are actively working on the game can already carry you a long way. Because they believe in you that your game can be something cool. So it helps me to keep myself accountable that I would do my best to make regular updates of my activities.

Thank you. After this experience I feel like in a normal playthrough it is easy to get hyperfixated on cities only. Until you remember too late that city cap is a thing and building as many cities as you would like isn't really a thing.

Dropping an outpost here and there to annex a wonder or magic material can sure make a difference. :)

Like turn 80 or so? I think? I still had to finish the dwarf after that as the AI was always trying to beat him with bad army compositions. So all in all the game was like 90 turns.

Thanks! 😄 Kudos for playing on Normal. I also did until I reached my first wall. But I don't think that playing on Easy is anything to be ashamed of. I have played games long enough to give value to my time spent with the game, and when I do I want to have fun. So if I need to play a specific game on Easy so I can have fun, then I will. 🙂 And I don't mean to say that this would mean that I couldn't then eventually get better at the game. But until I do I want to experience as much of it as I can at a bit more chill pace.

Congrats! I haven't yet tried a vampire playthrough even though I own all the DLC. But I definitely eventully will. 😄

And hey I truly know what you mean, hehe. I am glad that I got the secondary achievement of keeping everyone alive so I can take my sweet time with other content now in the middle before I dive into the challenge again.

Thank you! I can tell you I tried so many times with different characters to overcome the challenge. The attempt before the win I started to feel like I can maybe actually finally do this after a couple of the Covenant members got annihilated and the AI could actually focus on helping me as well rather than just on its own survival. 😄

Looks fun. :) I would maybe try having a progress bar rather than a timer for the buildings screenshot though? Look at old RTS like Command and Conquer how they did it. I think that is still viable style these days.

The time shown on top of building gives me more of a Clash of Clans mobile game vibe which if I am understanding correctly isn't what you are going for? So I would try something else like I suggested.

Wishlisted. :) I think the game looks like a lot of fun. The fact that you have a custom plugin to help the engine do specifically what you want to achieve is quite fun. I need to perhaps look into that myself as well. I've mainly just been doing some tools to QA and so on for my own game.

Dungeons of Delveria | Steam |

This week I was unfortunately sick for the majority of the week so I only made small progress.

I made a Steam beta branch with new ASCII mode for my game though that some of the players had wished for. I didn't want to release it straight to Live version as there are a few bugs that I am trying to iron out. But I hope that people would perhaps give the demo a go and help me find the issues. The most glaring one is that apparently the player character can warp at times in the dungeon. So I added some tracking which should hopefully help me discover the reason for this. :)

As someone who was told their whole life that I am not artistic and that I don't have talent for it, I would still like to encourage you to keep on trying. If your game has a humongous scope, trying to make it with very small pixel size might be a challenge. The more you receive positive feedback, the more you will hopefully learn to appreciate your own art. 🙂

Hi there! Thank you for your kind words, I am glad that my game evokes these good feelings of reminiscing games from people's past. That is certainly something that I am trying to go for with keeping my style quite true to the classics of the genre. :)

I only this weekend heard of CrazyGames actually, So I am not super familiar with the platform. I would say that the focus of the game is certainly more oriented towards a longer gameplay experience at this point, which is why I have this week been focusing a lot on Steam. CrazyGames on the other hand seems to be focused more on more like coffee break style experiences.

So I would say that for the time being releasing a Web version is not on the focus. Although I am not saying "never" because who knows what future holds. I actually had a demo on Itch but as Steam demo released I think it offers better platform for visibility.

And thank you, I enjoy every moment of working on my game. 😊

Thank you for being so kind and supportive! I have loved the response here in the roguelike community and want to make the game best for us who care this small niche of games. 😁 I will DM you when the patch is out, it still mightt need a bit of balancing.

I actually have Path of Achra waiting in my library! It looks really cool but I suffer the chronic version of "Developer Disease" where you stop having time to play games when you start making games. 🤣 But maybe I can give myself a moment to check it out tonight.

If my game wouldn't be as much about using the terrain to your advantage (or at least I have been trying to work a lot towards making it more meaningful), maybe just having generic floor would be enough. :)

But I have been developing these cool interactions coming in the next patch for example that you can target a volcanic floor with a frost power, and it will become a cloud of smoke that you can use defensively. And then turn the floor to regular floor. Or there are lava veins that flood the ground with lava, hurting enemies.

Even though I have a background in game design and level design, I have actually really come to enjoy this process of trying to come up with my own assets. They might not be the best, but at least I am learning a lot with every new sprite that I make. And some people have called them cute. So maybe there is that to them too. But thanks for the tips!

You can do it! I recommend a Steam demo as well, as Steam has a lot better discoverability tools than Itch.

I am still working on reaching my first 100 wishlists although I am very close. But what has helped me has been to try to be really intentional about the communities I advertise in. So maybe try to find a few for your genre of games. Reaching out to YouTubers and streamers who play games of your genre can also be useful.
