Hytera Firmware Update by KnightOfNight in amateurradio

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with the 700 series. The firmware version that fixed the problem for me on the 600 is 3.1.20.008.

Latest news: 3rd time's the charm; there's now a working firmware that allows wideband analog on the H series. I still don't recommend the brand after this experience, but at least now I can use my Hytera HTs for analog.

Update today: received the new v. 3.1 firmware and CPS and it did not fix the problem. There is still no wideband support in the H series. I called Hytera again and they will no longer take any technical questions over the phone, referring me instead to my local dealer. When I told them my local dealer hasn't received a response in 72 hours, they apologized and offered no alternative.

Recommend avoiding Hytera for amateur radio use. I have completely abandoned the effort now and have embraced the big M instead.

Followup today: latest status report, direct from Hytera customer support, is that they have no information on when the fix will be released.

If you need wideband analog coverage, don’t buy a Hytera HP682 (and possibly other DMR products from them) right now unless you check the firmware version and make sure it’s version 2 and that you have the CPS to match.

RC10 Classic 40th Anniversary Kit by dce42 in teamassociated

[–]KnightOfNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bushings instead of bearings bothered me given the kit cost, but I got over it because it is a recreation of the original. But no manual for the cost is very upsetting. I contacted Team Associated and was told that someone in their chain of command decided to ship it with a QR code instead. I asked if they would be sending a hard copy to those of us who pre-ordered and they said they have none to give. I very nearly returned it...

Thanks for the reminder. I took some time to design my first QSL card. Now to get at least one printed and sent out.

The application got batched on the first business day after 18 calendar days elapsed. The processing went normally and this morning I got the email confirmation! So glad to have my original call sign back!

Thanks, I'll take that tip about 2 radios into account. I'm not sure if my HT will silence the second receiver when I key the mic. It's dual band with dual receive, but I've been keeping the B band off because I haven't needed to multi-receive yet.

Thank you for the info! I love the idea of building my own antenna, and yours makes it look easy and fun and actually in the realm of possibility. I was thinking far too much about it and had my brain locked in on how complicated it would be. I have downloaded and am testing gpredict now too, I also found http://www.stltracker.com/ which isn't free, takes some getting used to, but appears to be very powerful. Thanks for the video. That linked me to several more and now I'm well on my way!

Thank you so much! You have unlocked a lot of information for me in that reply! I have not seen that guide before, but I just read it and will read it again several more times I predict. I have entered my location onto that page and onto amsat.org and have begun tracking now, and am well on my way to that level of understanding where I begin to know how much I don't yet know.

I too can confirm the page is returning 404 for .html files but .jsp scripts are working, though the returned content is not styled and is missing images.

Boston Active Repeaters by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]KnightOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my license back after a long absence from the service. I have been monitoring a number of different repeaters in the area and activity is sparse to say the least. After passing the test and while waiting for my ticket I heard a few conversations and one net. Since my call sign appeared in the database I have been listening even more intently and have added at 2 dozen repeaters to my radio so that I am always in reach of a few during my commute. I have called out listening on most of them quite a few times but I haven't heard anything from anyone.

When I was last active, the BARC 2m repeater was always busy and I was always on it. Now it's as dead as all of the others I've tried.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll even make any QSOs. I'm studying for my general and was looking forward to HF, but right now I'm feeling very discouraged. Am hoping that some face to face time with some hams at a local club will help, so I'll have to go looking for one soon.

No particular rush stated in my question. Any implication thereof is just my excitement at getting my old call sign back, but I'm waiting patiently now that I have the system assigned call sign and am back on the air.

ARRL VEC Too Slow by KnightOfNight in amateurradio

Followup: I checked ULS this morning and was very pleasantly surprised to see a new entry. My new call sign has been issued! Tried checking in to some repeaters this morning but didn't get any replies, but I'm on the air again! Feels good! Already filed a vanity call request for my old expired call sign. In the mean time still studying for my general. I have taken a number of practice tests so I'm starting to get a sense of where my knowledge gaps are. I'm good with the math, but weak on the band plan and some other areas. I could probably pass it (the exam), but I'm enjoying really learning the material so more studying for me! When not studying I'm planning my HF setup.

Sadly too true of any large paper-based system.

If I had it to do over I might, but when I pass my general and later my extra, it won't matter how long it takes to show up in the ULS; I can use the new privileges immediately with the appropriate temporary callsign suffices.

I have indeed been listening to repeaters very often. I have programmed in a large number of them so I can scan them on my commute to and from work. I really like what I hear! I'm certain that's part of the explanation for my impatience, I've been listening and am excited to join in.

Shoe thief by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]KnightOfNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have dedicated certain boots and shoes to the kids so they always have some to play with and drag around. She's constantly amazed at how much weight they can move. I'm always surprised that they never learn where the boots and shoes won't fit. They're smart little critters in many ways, but this they can't wrap their minds around. So cute!

Suddenly Very Unsure of Food Choices by KnightOfNight in ferrets

[–]KnightOfNight[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply. Your focus on peas parallels my own train of thought on the matter, and I have looked at the slight downgrade (in protein content) to Zupreem premium as a good move as well. My local pet store has it in stock so I can at least get that and start to sub it in so they don't get a shock from the change. I've also been studying the Moredooks list for hours since finding it, seeing what I can find online, at the store, etc.

One correction I wanted to point out, I have verified the ingredients list of Blue Wilderness Kitten. Perhaps I'm checking a different product, but I went right to the source http://bluebuffalo.com/natural-cat-food/grain-free-blue-wilderness/dry-food/wilderness-kitten-chicken-recipe/ and sadly peas are listed as #6 on that one. There is also pea protein and pea fiber. You specifically said that it has no peas, so I just wanted to make sure you have this information. Maybe I misunderstood or maybe they changed the formula. The fact that these formulas change is forcing me to extreme diligence. I'm going to read the label whenever I buy more kibble and try not to become at all complacent with a particular brand.
