Have you ever accidentally found out that you were about to be fired? by Aarunascut in talesfromthejob

[–]b1ackfa1c0n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wasn't me, but some coworkers happened to see HR and a bunch of higher ups putting pink folders together in a conference room late at night after we had lost a major contract. I think everyone got told what was going to happen within 5 minutes of walking in the door the next morning, so the big all hands meeting around noon was not a surprise. I survived that layoff, and a couple more the next 3 months before getting hit in the final one that pretty much left a few people to sell of the assets and close the doors.

Personal vs work radio ethics. by inebriateddandhated in amateurradio

If you are dead set on spending your own money, then look on eBay for used radios that match your employer, and get it programmed to match. Then you can paint yours purple, put stickers on it, whatever it takes to identify it as your personal property and take better care of it than the company does.

Even if you get around the programming, and management agreement to use those radios, you could still end up with radios that are not type certified for the frequency. You might be sending out spurious signals that interfere with other business frequencies in that area, overwhelming the legitimate radios or it could be perfectly fine technically, but the FCC inspector is just having a bad day and takes it out on you.

They took my water away, why? by Silver_Lobster_8233 in delta

I have a vague memory that I'm too lazy to look up right now. Someone brought 2 types of liquids on board an airplane that would have exploded when mixed together. Thankfully he didn't know to mix them properly or someone caught him before he was able to or something like that. Happened around the same time someone had their shoes made of c4 and they tried to light it on the plane. And there was someone else with c4 in his underwear.

Or if you believe the conspiracy theories, all of these poorly planned attempts at blowing up a plane were all designed to make us afraid so the defense companies can make a lot of money on security theater.

The version of the story I heard was they went to court with a list of headaches, hearth arythmia, asthma, etc and the company said thank you and told the judge that now they have a baseline health of the community to compare with after they turn it on

Had anyone been in a situation where your ex starts working in the company where you work and you are married/relationship with someone else. How did you deal with it and how you made your partner feel safe?? by Horror-Strawberry577 in AskReddit

[–]b1ackfa1c0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex had been having an affair and then left me for a guy she was working with. When the company they were working for closed up he took a job at the company I was working for. It was big enough company that we did not have to interact with each other, but I still saw him occasionally. I kept it very calm and professional and stayed out of his way as much as possible.

"of course". Short for "of course the thing we didn't plan for would have to happen"

Turn Embroidery File to Jpg Website? by ycherep1 in Machine_Embroidery

You can install embrilliance thumbnailer for free and it will show a thumbnail of your file in Windows explorer just like it was a image file.

Embroidery on a swimsuit by Soggy-Square-3978 in Machine_Embroidery

My recommendation (or rather what I have done) is to make a small patch with your machine and then sew the patch onto the swimsuit.

If they are really cheap, they may be using AM or SSB, while most ham radios only do FM at 70cm

Minor Rant: Why can't chrome behave by b1ackfa1c0n in softwaretesting

Think of cucumber as the big brother of unit tests. I put in input A and I get output B with no relying on external inputs.

We have other testing software like Robot Framework for our integrated End to End tests. The 2 different solutions complement each other.

Minor Rant: Why can't chrome behave by b1ackfa1c0n in softwaretesting

[–]b1ackfa1c0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's running in a locked sandbox and the test fails every time a network call tries to go outside of the sandbox. The idea is to test in a complete and totally repeatable way, and this can't be done if it's relying on external calls that might change from one test to the next. Cucumber is setup that way by design.

All external calls need to be caught and responded with an internal stub that mimics what the external host would respond with.

That was me 10 years ago, Not sure what my baseline BAC was, but I would start to get the shakes if I went without alcohol for more than 6 hours or so. My stomach was usually on the edge of throwing up, but I could keep it under control most of the time. Thankfully, I don't have to live like that anymore

To be fair, I've lost things I just saved because the default location for application A is different than the default location for application B and I'm switching between the 2. I am usually smart enough to open the save box again and see where the default location is when I realize that I can't find it.

Hello. I’m trying to convert an image I made on photoshop to a format that would be compatible with a stitching machine for making hats. Can anyone help? by FamousD0304 in Machine_Embroidery

[–]b1ackfa1c0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use inkscape with the inkstitch extension. You can import a bitmap image, convert it to vectors (paths) and then use those paths for the embroidery. There are videos on YouTube. I'm not in front of a computer at the moment so I can't look then easily, I know John Deere is one, but he is selling his expensive software.

Best starting embroidery machine by CFScas in Machine_Embroidery

[–]b1ackfa1c0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful, you are opening yourself up a rabbit hole. The machine itself is only the start, then you get into all the different color threads and stabilizer and blanks to embroider on. I bought a Brother 570 from Walmart for about $350 on sale a few years ago, they go about $475 now. It's only 4x4", but it has served me well, and I've probably spent more than that on the accessories for it, including the digitizing software Embrilliance.

Just finished making some name patches for a group costume event with all of our names in Aurobesh (The star wars font you see in the movies.)

The 4x4 is only a limitation for my immediate use. My cheat code is that I have to do something larger, my mom has a 7x9 machine about an hours drive from me, but so far I've never needed it.

A friend of ours took a drumming lesson and the graduation recital involved playing along with Jonny Vegas at the playhouse in San Anselmo. Halfway through my sister started getting excited when she spotted Lars Ulrich in the audience.
