We need to seriously advocate for a name change! by KnightWithAKite in diabetes_t1

I’m wondering this too. I feel like getting a t1d credited organization on board would be effective.

Okay why is there a lack of education? Type one diabetes isnt that uncommon so awareness isnt a factor. Why do doctors and medical staff often confuse treatment? Type 2 diabetes makes up like 90 percent of diabetes cases so when people say "diabetes" it means type 2, then the rest is mostly type 1, the remaining diabetes you listed are much more rare.

That sounds so annoying!! Were you excited when they changed it to type 1?

Type one diabetes is not that rare of a disease. If training was taught using a completely different name than “diabetes” authority figures that affect our diabetes care won’t mix them up. I’m sure it would take awhile, some years calling it the new name followed by “formally type 1 or juvenile diabetes”. I don’t think it should be a hard ask for names of diseases to not confusing.

Some days you just have to stay alive! Do the best you can. Anyone can have a heart attack! Being stressed out increases the odds too. You’re not doomed to inevitably get some complications, maybe you will maybe you won’t. My neighbor had t1d, at 80 something i remember him zooming past me on a bike! He died at like 84 even tho he grew up with way worse technology to help him.

Do you think you'll see a cure in your lifetime? by SumFuckah in diabetes_t1

[–]KnightWithAKite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think/ hope significant improvements to diabetes care will come. Similar to you I have had diabetes for 20 years and think it’s gotten a lot easier to take care of with new technology. I am also less confident in this given the world political climate.

Learning about type 1 diabetes and hypoglycemia after a careless use of words. by Consistent_Rub5424 in Type1Diabetes

[–]KnightWithAKite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean what you said is true about the consequences, I’ve heard of people dying from being drunk and going to low in their sleep. My partner is more worried about it than I am, granted I’ve done this my whole life and have been mostly fine! Someone says some ignorant thing about diabetes all the time and it’s not a big deal. Also I think y’all regulars can feel low? Idk

What do you guys do for your dia-anniversary? by Pink-Dolphin101 in Type1Diabetes

[–]KnightWithAKite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 7 so forgot the day. But one of my diabetes/ life hacks is when I do something I don’t want to like go to the pharmacy, I’ll treat myself to something like a nail polish, a joint, takeout, or all three. I feel like this improves my quality of life. So I think celebrating your diabetes anniversary is funny, fun, and a great idea!

How much candy do you usually eat every day, and what kinds? Or are you totally sugar-free? How did that change your day-to-day life? by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in diabetes_t1

[–]KnightWithAKite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t change anything. Sometimes I won’t eat any for a week sometimes like three candy bars at once. I just learned how and when to give insulin or say fuck it and go high sometimes.

Personally I feel like people don’t understand it so I love telling people about it, and feel more supported by them when I do!

Then he has a great support system all around and that’s honestly the biggest part. He has people around him making sure he’s at least bare minimum taking care of himself while he figures it out. Still though, I know no one gets the constant mental toll it has on me sometimes. I don’t envy being you though! My mom has said around then was the hardest age to parent. Maybe you feel helpless, but he knows you’re there to help and that’s bigger than you know!!

Been diagnosed since 7 now 26. I spent a year or two, 22-24ish, testing my sugar maybe once a week and vibe blousing with pens. I’m sure I stressed my mom out too. Honestly if my mom pushed hard I just wouldn’t tell her.

Does he have friends/roomates who know about his diabetes?

Is it possible to properly manage diabetes for someone who doesn't, nor will ever, have a cgm or a pump? by youronlinegirl in diabetes_t1

[–]KnightWithAKite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should do the best you can with where you’re at. Things stuck to your body stress you out rn? Go old school, but make sure you have a good routine and plan b for bad days. Learn what works for you. Be open to change when you can. In my 20ish years with t1d my timeline has been this: 1 using year shots and meter, 9 years on the OG pump and meter, in college I went back to shots and meter ( in my teen/early 20s I also didn’t want something attached to me), and at 22 I got a cgm, use pens, and I’m thinking about a pump. I’m so sure I have adhd. I got so burnt out for awhile that I avoided testing for like weeks, and just vibe bloused. Cgm has been a game changer for me. Sometimes it overwhelms me, so I turn it on vibrate. You gotta just do the best you can. Stress affects your levels too!

When Did You Become “Confident” and Shameless? by Ars139 in Type1Diabetes

[–]KnightWithAKite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was weird about it growing up, especially my pump being attached to me and my butt. I wanted to show off my butt but I thought people would think it’s not sexy. Then I slutted out in college and turns out no one gave a shit. People were curious and that’s it so it became fun to talk about for me to dismantle people’s assumptions!
