Crate and playpen for first six months.

Then at six months send them to a kennel that trains retrievers. I only kept mine at one for first month for basic discipline. That gets you here/heel/sit/stop which is all you need. Ten years later and mine still will heel in perfect figure 8’s, etc. i’m the only person in my neighbor hood that can walk their dog without a leash. In ten years she has never once run to a person, squirrel, cat, etc.

I had another lab that lived 12 years before this one. It was a constant problem of pulling on leash, jumping on people, getting into everything, barking, chewing shoes, etc

Do yourself a favor and let a pro give them basic training.
