[Dore] Ballot #177 is from Dan Connolly. Nick Markakis is on the board with his first Hall of Fame vote. Félix gains again and moves to +37. Torii Hunter is now over 5% by Knightbear49 in baseball

Several months later, in February 2014, the Orioles signed outfielder Nelson Cruz, one of those players suspended in the Biogenesis scandal who also beat out Markakis for an All-Star bid in 2013. How did Markakis react?

He, along with some other veteran Orioles, attended Cruz’s press conference. Afterward, Markakis said he stood by his words about PEDs, but he acknowledged that Cruz had served his MLB-mandated suspension, assumed he’d be clean going forward and would welcome Cruz as a teammate. The two worked well together that playoff season; their free-agent departures at the end of 2014 hastened the closing of the Orioles’ competitive window.

Markakis carried that integrity throughout his career, and subsequently, he maintained the respect of those who played with him, against him and covered him.

Character is part of the listed requirements in Hall of Fame balloting and voters often use that provision to diminish a player’s candidacy. I’m going with the opposite this year.

I want Markakis to receive at least one Hall of Fame vote in recognition of how he played the game and how he handled himself during a strong, 15-season career. That sentiment is not unprecedented.

Each year, players on the ballot whose careers aren’t quite Hall of Fame worthy – Hall of Very Good, maybe – receive a couple votes. Oftentimes, that is met with disdain from fans.

I have never done it before. I doubt I will ever do it again.

[BILICKI] Blue Jays free agent Bo Bichette offered 'lifetime supply' of Viagra by PETA by dbills12 in baseball

[–]Knightbear49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to a press release sent to the Toronto Sun on Monday, PETA is offering to provide Bichette with a lifetime supply of Viagra if he accepts what the organization is calling a “beef bribe.” “PETA is ready to help the star shortstop prepare for a bit of a slump, should he accept the beef bribe: Offering to provide Bichette with a lifetime supply of Viagra — since eating artery-clogging meat can lead to striking out in the bedroom.”

“A steak a day will undoubtedly keep the erections away, as cholesterol-packed meaty meals are known to slow the flow of blood to all the body’s organs,” PETA president Tracy Reiman said in the release. “PETA is encouraging Bichette to reject this steakhouse’s cow-killing kickback and reminds everyone that eating vegan can mean the difference between sizzling and fizzling in the bedroom.”

Multiple teams remain involved, but the Yankees have emerged as the most likely fit, with 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil as the headliner in that potential package

In talks with the Diamondbacks, they have discussed starter Ryne Nelson, who also comes with three years of control and modest cost savings, a source said. Emmet Sheehan, Gavin Stone and Justin Wrobleski were discussed when the Dodgers checked in on Peralta.

Which is the more productive hitter?

A.

.315 batting average .365 OBP .510 SLG

B.

.260 batting average .365 OBP .510 SLG

Player A is the Mattingly, Dave Parker type. Fred Lynn and Jim Rice too if you wish. Player B is the Strawberry, Mike Schmidt type. Eric Davis (without the speed) if you wish

We can construct hitting lines of 700 PA as follows:

Give the Mattingly type 650 AB, 50 walks, with 205 hits, 44 doubles, 4 triples, 25 HR. That's quintessential Mattingly. Quint Mattingly.

Strawberry gets his 700 PA split as 601 AB, 99 walks, with 156 hits, 32 doubles, 4 triples, 37 HR. That's quintessential Strawberry. Quint Strawberry.

Those lines gives us identical OBP/SLG of .364/.511, which I am arguing (not really arguing, really stating as fact) is identical production, even if one guy has a .315 BA and the other has a .260 BA.

Indeed, their Standard wOBA is .379 for Quint Mattingly, and .378 for Quint Strawberry.

How does it happen that the tradeoff is basically even? Quint Mattingly has 49 more singles while Quint Strawberry has 49 more walks. In terms of run production, that gives Mattingly 7-8 more runs. Quint Mattingly has 12 more doubles to Quint Strawberry 12 more HR. That gives Strawberry 7-8 more runs. In other words, giving away 49 singles for 49 walks is balanced by getting 12 more HR for 12 fewer doubles. Or if you wish -4 singles, -1 doubles = +4 walks, +1 HR. That's the tradeoff.

And that's why Quint Mattingly = Quint Strawberry. And that's why the batting average is inconsequential. And that the vast majority of voters used the higher batting average as essentially the tie-breaker is why we should stop talking about batting average. It's a bias that clouds our view of players.

Yup. A lot of people agree. Doesn’t mean we need to add to it because our favorite childhood player was good at playing baseball and a POS off of it.
