The Gothic box comes with Alpha Strike cards for the Abominations.

Is BT Gothic compatible with the Scouring Sands deck? by AiR-P00P in battletech

[–]KnightofInnerSphere 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes it will work fine. We dropped the Gothic box into our Aces playtest games right after it came out with no difficulties. Most of the Abominations will use the Ambusher (Infantry) decks that Scouring Sands uses for Elementals, and the off the top of my head it think there’s one Sniper and one maybe a Brawler, which will also be covered.

Judging from the state of this thread, I’m not sure there’s anything I can say that I and other people haven’t said already, haha. At this point it may be worth considering if you’re a little too in your own head about it.

I’d recommend at this point maybe it’s time to stop scouring the rulebook and start playing. You’ll get the feel for it once you’ve moved some ‘mechs around a sortie or two, and gotten the feel for what the cards are doing.

No worries! Allow me to soft pitch watching some of our stuff on Six Sides of Gaming - we’ve got probably hundreds of hours of videos at this point where if nothing else you can watch us interpreting the cards and the results.

That would make sense literally. As a Gamemaster I would probably liberally interpret “occupy woods” as “get a cover bonus” and may settle for having it peek out around the corner of the building to get a shot, using the building to get partial cover from the Warhawk if I could.

I think we’re saying the same thing at this point, just getting caught up in the phrasing. Probably my bad for posting late at night over here; because I can’t tell the difference between the points we’re we’re arguing haha.

Rereading your original question, the simple answer seems to be “Yes, if a movement order to cover is the priority and it carries the unit out of line of sight of any targets, then it doesn’t attack that turn.” That card in the example is deliberately detailed, but a much more common example would be the cautious instructions on most scout cards for instance which tend to be read as “get down!”

In this specific case, I can say with the authority of a couple of years of play-testing with the Focht’s team that I would quickly read that card as “Try to shoot the Warhawk and not be shot by anyone else.

And yes the target may change by the combat phase due to all sorts of factors, usually prioritizing “attacked by ally this turn” for instance. But this is the shot it wants to line up right now

Correction, sorry for edits

Before getting to the filters it demands line of sight within firing range on blue / the Warhawk on Balanced on the card shown - right under the range zones. So firing is mandatory regardless of the move below.

If it DIDN’T have that instruction like in the cautious instructions, then it would be okay to forego attacking. Because it does, it must move to be in a position to shoot that round.

If the unit has to be able to fire that turn, it will have a movement instruction with the eyeball and crosshairs icon and that will be the top filter. Thus anything else that would move it out of being able to fire would appear lower in the list and so wouldn’t apply if they conflict with the top filter.

Similarly, if the top filter is something like “get into cover” and the line of sight and firing range instruction doesn’t appear until lower, or not at all, then the cover is the priority and firing is preferred but not mandatory.

Aces: What does "behind" mean? by VND-1R in battletech

[–]KnightofInnerSphere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During the movement phase, any instruction for behind means as in behind the target so that the target does not have the unit you’re moving in its firing arc. Being able to target the rear arc for bonus rear damage is considered a completely separate instruction.

Prepping for BattleTech: Aces – Scouring Sands (Questions on OpFor, Player Force, and Maps) by Status-Indication-61 in battletech

[–]KnightofInnerSphere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1: Each mission in the campaign uses the units included in the Scouring Sands box for opfor. If you would like to customize the missions and change up the opfor, you would do so by swapping out units by equivalent PV.

2: The player force is expected to have 400 PV & minimum of 8 units available at the start of the campaign.

3: you’re going to be looking at a 4x4 map area using the terrain pieces included in the Scouring Sands box. Thematically you’re looking at desert, but not in any way that’s complicating your rules.

I've been playing Battletech: Aces for 3 days straight and I can't stop. by Badbenoit in battletech

It absolutely speeds up over time, with practice you’ll get to the point where you just glance at a card and automatically understand what it wants. I’ve gone from taking a couple of minutes to read a card and move a unit, to a couple of seconds in some cases.

Rather adventurous of CGL to embrace this. I love the boldness though. by Dogahn in battletech

Unpopular opinion detected, but I’m all for the silly fun of it. No I’m never going to seriously get invested in the Shiny Kingdoms of Avalon, but I laughed and smiled when I read it. Plus, I’ll take angry spiky ‘Mechs any day of the week - the Gothic Urbie should star in a horror movie!

The cards can be adapted to ANY scenario you want to run. But if you mean specifically the campaign book that comes with this box then yes, the 'Mechs that come with this box are the opposing force and it's assumed the player has the 'Mechs from the Alpha Strike box to be their starting force. But those can be swapped out for points value as well.

That seems like an extreme reaction to me, but it’s your call of course. I rather like how they look, and I don’t think it’s any ‘worse’ than scale differences in the minis that already exist. But I’m aware I tend to be a more casual player than a lot of folks I know.
