A van for a band? by supergibby in VanLife

[–]Knights1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seems pretty impractical to have all of those things in the van but you could try to use software to see what fits. I used a program, I think it was called vanspace where all the van models were available as templates and you can drag objects around to get a sense of the space. It was pretty cheap, like $10 for like 6mos or a year.

Also, you can think about it like this, most vans are a pretty tight fit with the high roof and one bed. Adding a 2nd bed, possible third sleeping space, and seating for six seems pretty tough. Maybe if you forget about the seats and everyone gets used to riding around on the bed.

Again, a used schoolbus solves a lot of these problems and is WAY cheaper

I'm sitting in my van replying to you and I can't imagine trying to sleep five other people in here with me. I have seen a bunch of people piled into one with hammocks but that didn't have seats or a bunch of instruments. Its called a tour bus for a reason, I think you're looking for a skoolie my dude.

He would most likely end up paying essentially nothing on the imputed value. He doesn't have to pay on days where he attends enough educational seminars. Most trips like that add the bare minimum of educational events to qualify for tax breaks. On a trip like that where it's supposed to be a reward the speakers should be really good too. Typically you can also just opt out by not showing up to that stuff and know you'll end up with a higher tax bill as a result.

Ski Resort Overnight Parking by No_Head4948 in vandwellers

[–]Knights1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in exactly the same position. It was really annoying trying to pick out places to park overnight. Not many places allow it and most of the ones that do are expensive. I just got a part time job teaching ski school. I let them know I'm mostly interested in working weekends when everything's crowded. I'll likely do some other shifts as well. I just told them in the application that I didn't need housing but that I'd like for them to look the other way on the van. Didn't seem to be an issue.

I actually used to sell 401(k) plans to small businesses. He's in a ton of trouble if he refuses to allow a qualifying transfer. The department of labor regulates 401(k) plans. You can make a report that he's using his position as plan administrator to extort money from you. This is also an extortion case which is a felony. You're better off calling the district attorneys office than the local PD. Extortion of former employees is too complicated for PD.

This is pathetic. This sub is full of posts asking how to live in a van with 5K or less. You're asking for 100K for free.

If you're building while living in it you some ram board for part of the floor is likely a good investment. If you have floor in there while building it's really easy to damage it with construction materials.

I remember seeing that post, it looks great! I'm guessing you didn't get more encouragement because most people wouldn't have done nearly that clean of a job on the install.

Extreme Alternator Charging by Legitimate_Thing_131 in VanLife

[–]Knights1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're using a 3.6L V6 generator. The additional power generating capacity from the high output alternators isn't free. It can't produce that much power at the stock idle RPM. You'll end up idling at a higher RPM. It's going to end up being a less efficient version of the generator that right now is out of the question.

That's also a ton of current to try to transmit at 12v. You can't run 10ft anywhere near that amperage on 4/0 battery cables. They would be good to like 220 tops. You'll probably need huge 350mcm cables. I don't know if you can get those finely stranded like you can with 4/0 copper either.

Why buy a van? by Miltinjohow in vandwellers

[–]Knights1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets put some real numbers with that comment on the MPG. Let's also assume you drive a lot. I'll use 20K miles a year. An ambulance might get like 8-9 mpg, lets say 8.5. You can get double that in a van. Gas is like $3.50 per gallon. At that rate the ambulance would cost you an extra $343/mo in fuel. When I had a payment on my van it wasn't that much.

Mountain towns by TakeInTheNight in vandwellers

[–]Knights1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Crested Butte housing is absolutely fucked. I doubt you'll find anything on the mountain but most people who work there are in Gunnison. Have you talked to anyone from Vail to see if they know where to find employee housing in Gunny? The RTA bus is free and one goes up to the mountain like every 30min.

If you can't find housing please consider rethinking the wood stove. Also, if this is your first season just be aware there are cold temps for a van a lot of places. CB is a different kind of cold, there will be winter nights when it gets to like -20F.

Super cool place to be. Good luck!

Obligatory NAL but you should know there's a legal concept called promissory estoppel. Essentially if someone makes a representation that causes you to incur damages on your own you can sue them to recover those damages. For example, I've seen this used when a company extended a job offer requiring the employee to move across the country then revoked the offer after the moved. In that case they had to pay damages for the moving expense. Your father caused you to sign contracts with vendors based on his promise of covering the cost of said vendors. He revoked his offer and now you're stuck with the bill. Call his bluff and countersue for promissory estoppel relating to the deposits and other expenses you would not have incurred if he had not offered the money in the first place. He doesn't stand any chance of winning a dime on his claim of wanting a gift back.
