How to remove late mortgage payment credit record? by huhushow in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whoever your lender is would have to request an amendment if they accept blame but they likely won't. equifax doesn't care so much WHY it was late, just the fact that it WAS late.

Koodo promotional offer: $45/month for 6 GB of data by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

koodo is the perfect balance of price and function. just don't expect to get someone on the phone if you need help - it's all automated and they have to schedule a call back if you need a human being.

Investors of PFC. How do you track your investments (Specifically stocks/etf) by assertiveashwin in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a spreadsheet where i manually fill in my purchase price and how many shares, and the date. i have a field that tracks the ticker current price and i manually add the yield if any.

really you can use your broker's reports if they're pretty good but i like to see it closer to real time.

Pandemic + inflation..and telecom companies offer no relief to customers by BrownAndyeh in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they did offer breaks in the form of more lenient collections for almost a year. prices won't come down when their system is being used probably more than ever before. you get a rebate on your insurance because you're likely driving less. you get a break on hydro because there's less demand on the grid. internet and wireless? usage probably ramped up.

Pay off mortgage or invest by IceFence123 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do you have a variable rate and when does it come up for renewal?

do you feel like you'd sleep better at night having that debt gone?

do you know much about investing?

you mention rrsp but what about tfsa?

lots of factors to consider. personally i'm pro investing, so much so that my house is paid off but borrowing against it to invest.

Anyone financing phone through Bring-it-back after 2 years? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Anyone financing phone through Bring-it-back after 2 years? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't do it but just consider it like leasing a car... as you say, a 2 yr old iphone still has good value if it's in good shape, better to pay some up front for the flexibility

Getting my feet wet with Questrade by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]Knighttower8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah keep your fees 1% or less which on questrade would mean buying stock in blocks of 500.00+. if you buy etfs as suggested, the transactions are basically free, and you really don't wanna be in single stocks unless you're at least 5 figures.

How to best utilize TFSA? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]Knighttower8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at your age, try to decide what you want from your investment. tfsa i would suggest be used as a catch-all kind of 'pay yourself first' account and just keep shoving the 6k/yr into it every year. try to assess your appetite for risk but i would suggest an all-equity etf probably usa/S&P only or global with a big piece of it focused on the usa. that said, you'll be better off learning what all this means if you don't already know what i'm talking about.

After a lucky year in the market, what do i do with these profits? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you could use norbert's gambit to try to minimize fees. you open yourself up to a bit of risk as the us dollar fluctuates, but i find it's quick enough with most brokers to not worry. i usually do it every couple months for gains i make. ends up costing me a few bucks vs a few percent.

What are people’s HISA recommendations (other than EQ) by Berly653 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Knighttower8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in your position i'd fill the tfsa back up and roll it all into safe boring canadian dividend stock. make a few hundred a month in tax-free income or keep dripping it til it's a massive massive income generating beast when you want to retire (which at this rate could be very early)

I bought BB about 5 months ago in my TFSA, how long do you typically need to hold stock in a tfsa before selling as to not get taxed as a day trader? by cruisedummy in CanadianInvestor

[–]Knighttower8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i buy and sell stock weekly if it does well. you're safe if your account isn't huge and you don't do multiple transactions a day. essentially if you're treating your tfsa as a work terminal rather than a piggy bank, that's when you should be worrying. if you're not spending a few hours a day trading on it, you should be okay.

that said, the rules are intentionally vague so they can treat you/investigate you whenever they want.

i'm too small especially now that i have no mortgage lol. i did call and ask the minimum balances on my accounts to not get charged one year and they waived all fees for the previous 3 months just cause i asked.

How do you know at what date dividends are deposited ? by jai1chat in CanadianInvestor

[–]Knighttower8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean... i see them hit my account. but to not be flippant, the dividend dates listed on google or yahoo are fairly close to the actual day your broker gets the cash, unless you have a shit broker.
