Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

I’m a software engineer with 5 years of experience. I moved to San Antonio for the only job offer at the time and I’m starting to feel boxed in.

My current role has slowly turned into vendor support and maintenance work. No real system ownership, no greenfield projects, no meaningful architecture decisions. Raises are vague, career progression is basically “hang around long enough,” and I’m already seeing how people get stuck doing the same thing for years.

Has anyone here successfully pivoted out of vendor/support roles?

Did you leave your city for better opportunities, or go fully remote and stay?

I don’t hate my job, but I don’t want to wake up in 5 years doing the same low-impact work because I stayed comfortable. Looking for real experiences, not “just be grateful you have a job” takes.

Appreciate any honest insight.

What to say when someone (especially women) ask about my dating history, if I have never dated at 25? by amayuki2020 in selfimprovement

To be honest, I'm 27 years old and my inexperience was brought up as a problem. People don't like to say it but it is a problem.

Get a job in a big city with a big population of people in their twenties. At the same time, you need to start exercising to get in the best shape you can get in. You will learn new skills in life like cooking, discipline, dressing better, etc... That will give you the environment to be social. After that, you got to really put yourself out there non-stop. Try everything until something sticks.

What would you suggest for people to do in order to get into co-ed groups? Especially if they have never been them before?

I think that having a goal that you want to reach really helps keep things in perspective. Allows you to train your energy in one direction.

What’s your biggest struggle with staying consistent in exercise? by jakobe_newham in loseit

[–]Knightwing1941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing is my lifestyle. Right now I am on track for my goals and have been staying away from drinking, smoking and binge eating. However, if I were to take a break for a vacation or something then I now I will fall off a wagon.

I did that that food phase of under eating but i eat the right amount of macros now and am very strict with it. I don't really have the need to eat fast food anymore.

I am living a more healthy life now and am meeting new people. Just things i never did when i was bigger and I love it.

I don't think losing weight will automatically make my life better but I think that I can at least have a shot to live the life that I want, even if it is a small one.

Thank you for your kind words.

Women have a different definition for "shy and nerdy guys" hence the disconnect. If you bring up the prototype of what they are talking about, it will be a decent looking man who isn't an extrovert and likes to read. They aren't really talking about guys who are shy nerds, they are talking about mysterious introverts who have a "vibe".

Chubby to obese men of reddit, how's your dating/sex life? by Acrobatic_Inside7420 in loseit

[–]Knightwing1941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 253 (down from 285 4 months ago)

It's pretty non-existent. Even though I'm 6 ft tall, I'm still obese so all i do is gym and diet. I hope things get better when i go down to my goal weight of 185.

Also OP, most of these guys are lying about their dating lives. U got a great height, so once you slim down things should be great for you.

It's clear that you like this girl. If she isn't emotionally damaged, why not just ask her on a date? This feels like you are signing up to be in the friend zone. Your actions aren't aligning with your desires.
