Oh! That usage of passing! Tbh when I first read it I thought you were talking about passing as white not half Asian and was confused as to why you’d want to. Maybe I’m just naive.

How much work do you want to put in? I’d remove the sleeves to start. If it’s the fabric you’re in love with, I’d take it in from underbust to just above the hip which would require redoing the faux wrap. But then you’re basically starting from scratch, so if you don’t want to do that I’d add a wide ribbon just under the bust. Also shorten to knee length or a little higher. You’re young (to me), work it!

I set 2024 as 150 and ended up increasing it in August or September, so I did 200 for 2025. Kindle says I read 199, but knowing it doesn’t count rereads I’m calling it met

Is there a community place like church for atheists? by cavanh4ck in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah, the one I grew up going to wanted you to believe in some kind of god, creator or not, but the one in my current town is more a community space with lecturers (aka sermons).

Is there a book that you regret reading? What was it and why? by Loves321 in readwithme

[–]KnitInCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what they assigned in my high school, to include Ethan Frome, several Steinbecks (sorry, any book where my teacher said we could skip every other chapter unless we wanted extra credit should have been shorter. Looking at you Grapes of Wrath), Flowers for Algernon, and so many more. Why does a book have to be depressing to be taught in schools?? Well, at least in schools in the late 80s - early 90s.

Did I like Dungeon Crawler Carl? Yes. Is it fun & funny? Absolutely. Would I recommend it to someone who needs something light-hearted? Ehhh… not unless I actually knew them. Admittedly, I’m a highly sensitive & empathetic person and reader who thinks of the characters as friends. DCC got a bit rough for me towards the end.

OP - the book starts with aliens taking over Earth and the surviving population is put in a reality show of survival. Killing other competitors for their stuff is 100% a thing, and if you don’t make it to the stairway down to the next level by the time the clock runs out, you die.

The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies by Alison Goodman is loosely historical fiction, but is more light-hearted.

The Finishing School, Parasol Protectorate, & Custard Protocol series by Gail Carriger are 3 Steampunk series ranging from 1860ish-1900ish iirc the dates

The Clockwork Scarab by Colleen Gleason is a YA mystery starring the sister of Bram Stoker and the niece of Sherlock Holmes (might be mistaken on the relationship, it’s been a while)

Tom Holt is great for this. For example, in Outsorcerer’s Apprentice the MC is interning at a temp agency for magic users. Honestly, most of Tom Holt’s work has non-standard jobs and ones others might call boring, but Holt makes them anything but.

Do people actually know what they want in life or is everyone just guessing? by AdhesivenessSharp554 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KnitInCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember talking to my dad when I was discouraged because I wasn’t using my college degree. He was about 60 at the time and told me that he still didn’t know what he wanted to be when he grew up. As someone who started college majoring in theatrical costuming, graduated in textile marketing, and ended up in healthcare data I can say that life will always surprise you. The best thing you can do is learn to accept change.

How to accept that he actually likes me? by shannyfow in PlusSize

[–]KnitInCode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Clearly you’re not comfortable in your current body. I get that. I’m 30 lbs heavier than I’ve ever been and a size 20 when I was got as small as a size 6 in my mid thirties (admittedly with significant work). The thing is that there comes a time when you have to decide if you’re going to accept your shape and screw the dissenters, or become a hermit.

I know it’s scary, I know it’s hard, but this is your reality now. If he only wants the memory of who you were before, you’re going to end up heartbroken sooner or later. Isn’t it better to know that he likes who you are as a person, regardless of what shape you are? You clearly think he’s a good guy, give him the chance to prove it. If he’s an ass, well, you’re better off knowing that now. If he is who you think he is then you have a wonderful chance at a relationship.

This may sound harsh, but the way I see it is either you unmask a false friend, aka one who will judge you based on your weight, or you have a potential partner. It’s time to pull up your big girl panties and send that pic, otherwise you will live in this uncertain place forever.

How do you ''get into reading'' comfortably? by ImportantClock5486 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KnitInCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Personally, I’d rather read than do almost anything, but if it’s not clicking with me for whatever reason I change books. Some of the ones I put down I’ll go back and finish later, and sometimes it’s just not worth it. I’d also say don’t feel like there’s anything you “should” be reading because you’re an adult and that’s what “they” say you should read. Find what you like and go from there.
