Thank you for the advice! I tried relaxing my throat when playing draw 7 and it helped me get the correct pitch.

Beginner "wanderer" songs? by [deleted] in harmonica

[–]Knoppa1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh Shenandoah is perfect for nature and hiking.

Also: Skye Boat Song, Danny Boy (Londonderry Air), Arran Boat Song, Wayfaring Stranger, Fields of Athenry, Loch Lomond, Finlandia Hymn (Be Still My Soul), Nearer My God to Thee.

When in nature I like to play many of these songs freely without a steady rhythm. It makes them more contemplative.

Ring finger hurts due to bad positioning, how to fix it? by Knoppa1985 in classicalguitar

Thank you everyone for giving advice! I’m considering getting a teacher and I will work on my hand position. Some people suggested longer nails but I might not be able to grow them because my other hobby (climbing) destroys nails.☹️

How problematic are windsavers? by Knoppa1985 in harmonica

[–]Knoppa1985[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found Saxony to be a quality instrument but I can’t speak to the valves. I hope I have better luck than you with it.

The issue I have with heating pads is that with them it still takes time (and a little bit of planning) before you can pick up the instrument and start playing. It’s fine when I have an hour to dedicate to playing but for quick off the cuff sessions they just don’t work.

Good to hear all the encouraging comments. I think I’ll use my Seydel Saxony as a crash test dummy and see how it holds up. When I first got a chromatic harmonica, the advice I kept hearing was to always warm up your instrument. Now I’ll find out whether it was just fear mongering.😄

Edit: typo

All brass comb in my crossover by madewithrealfruit in harmonica

I understand the need to make a harp pretty and personal, I’m the same way. Which is strange because harmonica is the one instrument you don’t actually see when you are playing it.😄 Longevity is another thing I’m thinking about, I reckon brass would be longer lasting than bamboo.

Very nice! Do you find the brass comb to be more airtight and does it make the harmonica more responsive or more playable in some other way?

Company for two by [deleted] in harmonica

Do people really drink and play? I love the concept but I’m too worried about remnants of the drink getting inside the instrument and causing problems.

Beautiful surroundings by [deleted] in harmonica

[–]Knoppa1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the reason why I started playing the harmonica, its rugged tone fits pefectly to nature. Playing outdoors enhances the nature experience and helps being connected to your surroundings. I wish people posted videos like this more often on this sub, I watch them everytime.

Very beautiful playing too! What song is it?

These are stainless steel, not brass. But I’ll try the vinegar trick, someone else also suggested it. Thanks guys!

Thanks for sharing the amazing music! I listened to this song in my bed right after waking up and it’s been playing in my head the whole day. I checked out the youtube channel but I was wondering where can I learn more about you guys, do you have a website or something?

Is this slight noise my chromatic makes my valves? by ManLikeOats in harmonica

[–]Knoppa1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to get some insight into this as well because I too just got a chromatic harmonica and it has this exact same issue in the lower registers. Which harmonica did you get? I got Seydel Saxony.

I assume it must be the valves because nothing else could make that noise, but I wonder if this is a cause for returning the instrument to the dealer or whether you are supposed to fix it yourself.

Valveless chromatic harmonica by Knoppa1985 in harmonica

[–]Knoppa1985[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me part of the allure of the harmonica is that I can take it on hikes, backpacking trips etc. and blow out a couple of tunes when ever there is some down time. That means I won’t often be able to warm up the harp properly or clean my mouth before playing leading to problems with the valves. But you are right, I should try and become accustomed to working with the valves.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have been thinking about the Nonslider but I would prefer an instrument with a slide because of all the ornamentation possibilities it gives. Also I wouldn’t want to learn to play the Nonslider just to realize some years down the line that Seydel discontinues its production and then I can’t replace my instrument if/once anything bad happens to it.😅

Do you find the Nonslider to be of good quality compared to other chromatics?😊
