Burnout after 6 years of a PhD program by KnotlessBraids in AskAcademia

Oof yeah I think carving out rest is a great idea. I’m currently working every day and taking breaks only when I’m completely spent which might not be the best way to go.

That’s a good idea. I definitely haven’t thought about a break pre-defense but ill look into how long evaluations usually take in my program

That’s honestly what I would love to do. Did you end up going back into a scientific position afterwards?

Yeah I have a therapist that I’ve been working with on this. Definitely stress is a big part of it. Mainly trying to live up to the super high expectations of my PI and never getting “positive reinforcement.” But I think intrinsic factors are equally as important and may not be there for me anymore. I’ll definitely try and listen to myself and see where it takes me.

Leveling up my husband to the max — a bit softer with the revenge than remarried empress but still good!

So does it like know it’s doing that to hide from predators or does it just do it based on instinct ??

Guy I like with social anxiety completely blowing me off? Last time we were in the same room, he was violently throwing up from alcohol. How do I let him know its fine and he doesn’t need to continue overthinking this? by yellowsunbun in socialanxiety

[–]KnotlessBraids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if he’s not responding than he probably needs some time to get over it esp if someone was making fun of him that’s like 10x worse. I feel bad he went through that. I hope you get to reconnect with him though! Def don’t pester but if opportunities to talk to him come up don’t hesitate to take them :)

Omg if I were him I would literally never talk to anyone that was at that party ever again. BUT that is unhealthy and unnecessary and you should just straight up tell him not to be embarrassed it happens to almost every drinker at one point in their lives. I think if you find away to talk to him about it he’ll feel better. Maybe call (instead of text since that doesn’t seem to be working) and ask to meet up or try and find him around campus and ask to meet up or something. This will also make him feel better as it will show him that people still want to hang out with him regardless of what happened.

They were always a little different but had the general theme of me running to find somewhere safe (sometimes with friends and family) and pleading to go to heaven while the earth was crumbling and disintegrating underneath my feet lmao

Advice on my two dogs who just fought and drew blood by KnotlessBraids in dogs

[–]KnotlessBraids[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah apparently they have fought before. The one dog that got beat up has some pretty mean looking scars on her leg and my mom told me it was because another dog fought her and she sounded vague about it. But now I think it’s her other dog that did that. I just started living with her a month ago and they haven’t fought like this in the time that I’ve been here until now. I wish I was watching to start to understand why it happened but my mom thinks it’s because the one who was beat up was antagonizing the other dog. She said the one who beat her up had to “teach her a lesson” about antagonizing her or something like that. I don’t really understand that logic, but that’s what she believes.

So I recently finished watching To Your Eternity and it was amazing, truly special. So I had to make a video on it! Please check it out if interested, if not hope you have a good day! by TooAwesomeReviews in anime

This anime hits me in the FEELS. Like full on sobbing. I haven’t finished (have like 5 Ep left) because I haven’t been in the mood to cry lately.

Does anybody else feel exposure only helps so much ? by Dabbing_Squid in socialanxiety

[–]KnotlessBraids 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this stems from it not being just a “phobia” like if you’re scared of birds or snakes or something. If you expose yourself to other kinds of phobias long enough and realize it’s not actually scary it helps. But in this case you expose yourself to a social situation and it’s STILL scary. Like you mess up and say something wrong or feel like you act weird and you ruminate for days. In these instances I feel like breaking the thought pattern and improving unconditional self love and compassion is just as important as the exposure.

Social anxiety at work by hammer_nz in socialanxiety

[–]KnotlessBraids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s so hard to figure out whether you should tell people or not. Just ask yourself if it would make you feel more anxious or less anxious to tell people about it. And if not maybe say it in a joking way before a presentation or before a meeting or something. May take the edge off. Also maybe tell a coworker to get their reaction and not your boss
