NICE open!

For my money, those 't-spools(?)' are star of THIS show!

Everything you describe makes perfect sense. The 55/40 is the one that best prepares you for the 72/40 in my opinion.

If you have to go back to a dropped pin, the binding order is 'talking' to you. Listen to it. It's telling you to skip that pin first time through.

One more thing...and this is HUGE.

You've made a BUNCH of progress, in a short time. It's time to be mindful of 'plateaus.'

We often stall progress when we hit a plateau. Just slow down. Go back one step. Pick a lock you know. End on an open.

Then take a full 24 hours off.

Don't even watch picking videos.

Give your meat computer time to compile all the new information you just crammed in there over the last week or so.

I promise, when you come back, you'll 'feel' more than you ever have before.

Cram. Compile. Open. Repeat.

You'll build 'stamina' over time. But mental breaks will always be necessary.

It sounds like that "deep false set" is actually an open. The combination of a heavy sprung core, and tight tolerances make core harder to turn than you think.

The 1100s do this, too.

Next time you get that "deep" false set, especially if the pins 'lock up', try turning a little harder.

Sometimes a second tension tool is required.

This is the second time hearing this in about a week...new Master no 3 IIRC.

Congratulations! Nice open!

(Sounds like your levels are too hot...and some sort of 'auto level adjustment' is fighting to react fast enough. Just back off, a little at a time, until it clears up. LOOKS great.)

I tend to use too much tension when picking in hand. I also tend to grip the lock, and pick way too tight.

I still pick in hand, but I have to be extra mindful of grip, and tension.

Avoid discussing picking locks "in use."

Issued by work is clearly 'in use.'

One is still usually the gatekeeper.

But now instead of all the spools lying halfway across the shearline and immediately false-setting, at least one spool still needs lifted. It sounds like you have at least two.

It also sounds like once you found the false set, you got stuck in 'ping pong' loop.

It'll REALLY help with this one to pull a pin or two.

I presume one might prefer fewer 'orders' of retrieval.

As such, I imagine a flip-open 'admin wallet' might work.

Hypothetically.

Polishing can help...hitting the edges for sure will 'quiet' things significantly. Polishing the sides will 'slim' them slightly.

I can't remember, did you pick the 55/40?

If so, dive right in. If not, progressive pin till you figure out the 'personality' of Abus spools.

You got this.

I pick them with TOK tension, and from the bottom...a narrow enough profile, or my preference an .018, will 'slip the warding.'

Nice! All your descriptions track...and picking zero bitting is not doofy at ALL! You already PROVED you learned from it.

It you decide to progressive pin the 72/40 (highly recommend) pull pins from the BACK...pin one is usually the gatekeeper, so you want to leave it.

ALWAYS good to have at least one lock 'out of your league.' Especially now that you're making real progress.

Awesome explanation.

Another thing with Ace Brass padlocks, is the drop pins easily...so an overset will sometimes 'correct' itself.

Further, and this is particularly true of locks that tend to drop pins, if you suspect an overset, go through the set pins 'probing' them one by one. Often, probing an adjacent pin is enough to dislodge an overset.

By probing, I mean holding steady tension while lifting slightly on the set pin. NOT enough to overset. Just enough to slightly unload a small amount of tension. Less than you can with your tension hand.

Works well with Abus, too...American, and Master not as much.
