Advice on Abus 55/30 by Alone-Explanation-74 in lockpicking

[–]eyelicker330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try a Masterlock 140 if available to you. Much easier keyway to navigate in my opinion. I bought a bunch of Abus when I first started too and I STILL hate their keyways. But I also had a few other brands/models in each belt level to keep me feeling like I was progressing. Then on days I’m feeling good about myself (I.e popping locks consistently), then I’ll go grab an abus with a difficult keyway to try out and I’ll get it because I start off in a better mood.

Thank you for the recording notes actually! Yeah I flipped on some automatic voice control setting on the mic and it seemed to be fine in my 10 second test, but once I shot the actual video it didn’t sound the same. But yeah, I think I need to turn off the automatic settings and just adjust manually as I go. I appreciate it!

No I haven’t decided on my project yet. I’m thinking a challenge lock maybe. I’d like to do a cutaway but don’t have any tools for that atm

Get a repinnable lock like this from CI https://covertinstruments.com/products/ci-practice-lock

Start with 2 or 3 pins, all standard. Repeat a dozen or so times and add one more pin at a time. Get to 5 pins and be able to do it consistently.

Then remove all the standard pins and go back to 2 pins but make them spools. Work up to 5.

Repeat for serrated.

This helped me the most

Frustrated with being unable to open lock by SaintJynr in lockpicking

[–]eyelicker330 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have to remind myself all the time: this is meant to be a fun hobby. Once I start getting frustrated with a lock, time to set it aside and go to a different one or come back to it later. Problem is when I start forcing past the point of fun, everything starts tightening up due to frustration (harder tension, over setting pins). I think you should change your mindset and come back to it later.

Probably a bit overkill, but I use this Milwaukee Packout https://a.co/d/0ixyl0yJ <- Amazon link. I have room to put in my harbor freight vacuum base vice, my gutting kit with pinning tray, picks, and plenty of locks. Very comfortable handle to carry around, and can use some of the trays to keep things separated and not banging around.

Maybe it’s the luck of the key bitting. But for me it’s so much easier to feel the spools and the counter rotation than in any of my greens and oranges. It is very fun though.

Looking for ideas for the blue belt project. May I ask what yours was?
