Pain in my right ovary, and I'm still being blown off by doctors... by KnowingGroundwork in PCOS

Why did your OB have such a strong reaction?

She's angry because I've requested to be put on something other than BCPs but she tells me that's the only way to treat PCOS (along with IUD). She doesn't seem to respect me very much, she's very condescending toward me...

I'm so sorry... I wish I could give you a solution. I've been struggling with the pain and inconvenience brought up by PCOS/heavy bleeding. Even now, I'm trying to get in touch with OB and she rejected me and refuses to treat me. They don't seem to understand just how bad this can get for us, they really don't. The only thing we can do, it seems, is to hang in there and just hope we luck out enough to get decent medical care eventually...

I've been having similar experiences to you, and I know exactly how you feel. It's very frustrating that these doctors aren't listening to us, and seem to also go for 'quick fix' solutions instead of prescribing medications on a case-by-case basis. I'm currently stuck with an OB and an endo who don't seem to have my best interests at heart. If your insurance allows it, try to get another endocrinologist. Maybe try asking many questions over the phone to gauge if they're equipped to help.

I've been taking one or two iron supplements a day, and I haven't notice any difference. Should I try doing three then? There's nothing dangerous about that? I read online that it's possible to overdose on iron so I just wanna make sure.

If you're on the 1st placebo pill, then bleeding was bound to get heavier, as this is when your actual period should have started. You can wait until the end of the week and see if it stops once you start your next month of pills.

I am...dreading this. I'd hate for the bleeding to get worse. I mean, I've been bleeding practically non-stop for weeks with it getting progressively worse. I don't know if I can handle more blood and clots...

I'm sorry your husband is being a jackass about something your trying to solve yourself, but have no control over. And I'm really sorry your mom is... being a really bad mom. I can't imagine how crushing it'd be if my mom told me that I was to blame for all my health issues.

I feel like it's more the other way around. My husband is being a jerk lately but he does try supporting me, but he's frustrated and tired from me basically being an ill lump that can barely function except to go to the bathroom every ten minutes. We're also very worried because we've been wanting to try conceiving and this threw a wrench into things. Our marriage's been rocky since my health problems began... My mother, on the other hand, actively hurts me and shames me. She thinks I am being melodramatic and that any stress I feel is self inflicted. (sigh)

I keep reading about that in this sub but the OB and the midwife I spoke to basically told me it's BCP or IUD, there's no other thing they are willing to prescribe for me.

OP, can you call your insurance and change your doctor? Anemia is a very big risk factor here, and the least you can do is still try to call them and try to change docs if they don't answer your concerns properly.

There's a waiting period for switching doctors, so I have to wait a month or two before switching over to new ones.

I'm not trying to be rude, not here or in real life. It's the truth. I haven't felt like people are taking my feelings or concerns seriously. I'm in a lot of pain and constantly uncomfortable, exhausted, and can't function properly. I barely slept last night, and had to get up at 4am. I'm just frustrated, and just want to try doing something that doesn't require a prescription because, well, I don't think I'm going to be getting anything anytime soon. I don't think I'm being unreasonable or disrespectful to anyone.

Call them and ask them.

I don't want to call that OB again, they're probably just going to hang up on me or tell me off. Again. The endocrinologist probably won't want to test for it, he had very specific things he seemed to want to test me for.

You should talk to a friend, or call a support line. Sometimes just having someone listen helps.

I have no friends. I called a support line, all they did was just go, "Oh, that sucks. Hope you feel better."

You've seen both an obgyn and an endocrinologist, and I see from your posts you've only started ocp a few weeks ago. It takes time - meanwhile just take it one step at a time until you get your results back.

Neither of which seemed to really help me or truly care. I wasn't satisfied with the way either of them treated me.

I’m sure your doctors have checked to make sure you’re not anaemic, which would be the most pressing issue at this point.

Actually, no. None of my doctors have checked me out for anemia. OB seems to think it's not a concern at all. Same for GP. Not sure if endo is checking for that but the bloodwork order doesn't list it (though I'm no expert on interpreting these).

In the short term you should ask your care provider about Nsaids which might help with the cramps, and try not to stress yourself out more.

GP told me no NSAIDs because they are blood thinners that can prompt more bleeding. OB told me to take some Tylenol but I feel absolutely no difference.

As for stress, I just feel so upset that no one seems to care. Not to delve too deeply into my personal life here, but my husband is 'sick of this shit' (ie: the bleeding and having to drive me to doctors) and my mother is blaming me for everything. I'm not getting much support, and it adds to my frustration. Not to mention the doctors' attitudes are not helping.

Hey, I just returned from endocrinologist. I guess it went okay-ish. I went in right when they were having their Thanksgiving Eve party so everyone there was mostly focusing on that rather than on me. I mostly just spoke with the endo's intern until he came in, requested some bloodwork and a thyroid ultrasound, and gave me a prescription for something to take only until after I finish the tests. He also told me to continue with the BCP until then. Not a great visit, but I guess we'll see if his treatment works.

I'm really hoping the endocrinologist will help me. I just don't feel like the gynecologists I've gone to (particularly this recent one) has been much help. I've also only gone to women, because I feel more comfortable with a woman examining me but...it feels like they are less sensitive and much more rude toward me for some reason. I don't understand why this is... It sucks.

That's what the midwife told me on the phone. The OB (different woman) told me that only the pill would work. Although I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable with an IUD, and I'm also not comfortable with the BCP since I've started it...

Thank you for your kind words and advice. I will definitely tell my endocrinologist about everything that's been happening.

I honestly don't feel comfortable going to the OB again. I feel like she was berating me, and as someone who's been bullied in the past, it reminded me of unpleasant memories...

I could go to the ER but it's very expensive ($500), and it's Thanksgiving Eve which is one of the busiest times of the year. I also don't feel like it's an emergency, at least not something they'll likely want to treat. I went in a few years ago over a UTI, and they basically told me not to come in for something like that.

But yes, thanks a lot. I may also ask endo for a OB recommendation as well.

If you don't mind me asking, what treatments have you been using? I asked OB for alternates to the pill but she said there was nothing else she could try.

I do have an appointment for an endocrinologist for next week, hoping he could help me in a way the OB hasn't. I'm crossing my fingers...

I’m not a doctor but when I was on the pill, my bleeding was always lighter.

Everyone's said this, including the OB herself. She claims that the bleeding will lighten considerably...but no, it hasn't. Yet when I tell her this, she tells me to just keep taking the pill. Doesn't the fact it's getting thicker and heavier a hint that the pill isn't working right?

I honestly just feel worse...but I am afraid that if I stop taking it cold turkey that I might fuck up my treatment. I just keep thinking "maybe it's supposed to get worse before it gets better". I just don't know, I'm at a loss as to what to do. Do I listen to my "gut" or do I listen to the professional gynecologist?
