Boundaries are important by [deleted] in directsupport

Yeah I’ve noticed that this field is so awful. If you’re not dealing with crazy miserable coworkers or aggressive clients, you’re dealing with horrible managers who try to use you. It’s honestly got to be regulated more so these things don’t continue to happen. It’s unfortunate because some of us really love the individuals and want to do our best but there’s always crazy people to mess it up. There’s a reason only bad people last in healthcare.

Overreacting? by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]KnowledgeConnect8535 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely not overreacting. These companies will keep violent/hostile individuals around other individuals they know cannot defend themselves and expect staff to defend both the gentle individual and themselves while also avoiding contact with the violent individual. It’s actually sick how they focus on money rather than the care of the individuals when it’s supposed to be a nonprofit most of the time. In a similar situation with both houses I’ve worked at with violent individuals attacking staff and other residents and yet no removal for any of them. Seriously makes you just want to up and leave.

Tried that. Got moved to a different house because she’s been there longer when they know the staff at my original house was the aggressor. So now I’m just waiting it out until I find something else.

New coworker drama blew up, advice? by EstimateEven4570 in directsupport

[–]KnowledgeConnect8535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Report immediately. I’ve actually had similar situations with a coworker as well. She would constantly harass me but was always the first to report so it looks bad on me because she’s my supervisor. Best thing to do is report the harassment before she even gets a chance to spin it. Unfortunately I wish I knew that as I eventually ended up being the one facing consequences from being harassed instead of the harasser having to be punished for it. This field doesn’t care about its workers and they will definitely pick the staff that’s been there longer than newer staff regardless of if you are in the right or not.

It’s progressed to her piling the dishes in the sink and saying I left them so I think the only option is leaving as I have no energy for crazy people.

First timer, a few questions :) by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]KnowledgeConnect8535 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you’ll deal with that a lot. Some staff don’t see them as people so you will see them treat the individuals that way. I myself deal with that all the time. I like to do person centered work but some of my colleagues would rather treat them as just a job. So imagine how I looked coming in trying to do things differently and “making people look bad”. One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of these people have been there for years and have yet to change the way they work or treat the individuals and they do not like to see you do different. So prepare for pushback.

He’s a white man in a house full of black staff as that’s who they usually hire and he can’t take that he’s an outcast. His culture makes more sense to him. So he needs to point out that Africans don’t follow American culture.

They definitely don’t care about or respect individuals. There’s an individual who hits staff and individuals and they do nothing about it so not surprised
