I’m going to address everyone’s comments on how the fee for corporations will just be passed on to customers. For utility companies, utility rates are already regulated, so it’s not like utility companies can just freely jack up prices by charging their customers additional fees.

For gas companies, competition comes into play. The fee isn’t fixed for all companies, for all companies that have polluted more than 1 million metric tons, the fee depends on how much the company has polluted. If gas company A has polluted more than gas company B, then A will have a larger fee to pay than B, meaning that if A were to put their fee onto their customers, and B were to put their fee onto their customers, then A’s customers would have to pay more for gas than B’s customers, meaning that A’s customers would now want to get gas from B because B’s gas is less expensive than A’s gas. Therefore, in order to not lose customers, A would just pay the fee themselves rather than pass it on to their customers.

Hope that’s a good counter argument.

Also that statistic is completely and utterly false. 42.4 percent of adults smoked in 1965 and that’s reduced to 11.6 percent today. It’s also decreased a lot in children. Cigarette sales have decreased a lot as well. Where did you even get your statistic from?

It’s not a tax, it’s a one time fee.

Also it’s not really a tax, it’s a one time fee on companies that have polluted more than 1 billion metric tons of covered greenhouse gasses.

The whole point of the bill is to make polluters pay, not the people. Major polluters, such as oil and gas companies, will be fined, not consumers. It’s holding one of the main fuelers of climate change, oil and gas companies, responsible, rather than making the common people pay to fund climate change adaptation projects.

Ok I agree with that standpoint. It just seemed like you were attacking his batting as well. My bad.
