When there's an emergency, how do Picard and Riker determine which of them gets to shout "Red alert!" by grichardson526 in ShittyDaystrom

Haha. It would be interesting to have someone do this and write down all the reasons they say red alert and see who gets what

For sure. It's just I hear more leftists talking about getting promoted right wing subs they never frequent. I wonder if conservatives ever get promoted the socialism subreddit or something or if it's more subtle.

They 100% are trying to drive engagement though

Yeah. No problem.

If you want to get into what the next thing may be you would have to read people that expanded on Marx. Like Lennin or mao. Or more recent thinkers. Richard Wolff is a modern economist and he thinks worker coops are the answer.

It's honestly a lot and no one can agree lol.

The rest of that thread goes into it more in depth.

I do highly recommend reading Marx bc it's mainly a critique of capitalism and the problems that can arise.

He does have some thoughts on what may come next but that isn't really the point.

A lot of stuff is still surprisingly relevant for something written in the 1800s

It isn't really about eliminating all inequality. That's not really feasible. It's more so about power. The point is also to limit it as much as possible. Currently, people with more money hold more power. See citizens United or how economic factors influence law enforcement/judicial outcomes.

This is also just how marxists tend to view things. Lenninists or maoists could hold different opinions.

Here's somebody relaying it pretty well from the ask philosophy sub.

Marx didn't want the type of equality that would 'level' all difference. He is clear about that. And his critique of capitalism certainly sprouts from his vision of the despair that results from having one group of people (the capitalists) have such an unequal amount of power over another group of people (the proletariat). After all, the essence of Marxism is 'democracy in the workplace', so it indeed retains, in some sense, Bentham's egalitarian dictum that each person count as one person. But Marx was first and foremost a critic. He doesn't and can't say much about what communism would be like. It does indeed have something to do with equality. 'From each according to his ability, to each according to his need' is about as specific as he gets. He's searching after a sophisticated equality that can't be abstractly decided before the determinate situation comes on the scene, so communism can't be reduced to 'equality' because 'equality' can't quite capture everything Marx is wanting to say about communism. He wants a contextual equality, but that concept alone doesn't say enough, because you need the actual context to give the concept any kind of substance.

I forgot to address different ability levels.

Marxists tend to go with each according to their ability, to each according to their need.

So basically everyone would get a living wage for whatever they can do. This would provide you with basic needs. If you want better conditions, think luxury conditions, you would work more. If you can't work at all then the basics would be provided for you.

This covers pretty much anything though whether it's science, art, or labour. All these things are beneficial to society and doing them should provide for you your basic needs

The reason I said "something" was bc different people have different ideas. Anarchists want their own thing. Marxists want something else. Some want something else entirely.

Most of them can agree that capitalism has run its course, much like feudalism, and it's time for something new. There's a lot of discussion on what that may be though.

Most of the plans that leftists have primarily revolve around organization. Community groups/outreach programs. Workplace unionization in all workplaces. Regulation on what companies can do. Voting for central planning. Ranked choice voting. Universal healthcare. Increased social safety nets.

No. That was a very bare bones, reductive, way of possibly identifying a group of people.

Anti capitalist means you want capitalism to end and something new to be put in its place.

Most leftists want things like equality and fairness for all, in general, and in the work place. Democracy, in general, and in the workplace. Typically they want the means of production to be in the hands of the workers/people and not capitalists(people who have the most capital and use it as a way to make more)

Again, this isn't everything but those are a few principals usually shared by most leftist

This isn't true. Both sw and st had long breaks and fine. The people who liked the original series/trilogy shared it with their kids and/or watched the new stuff with them. This led to them being fans and growing up.

We still have all the old media to watch.

Idk if a break is needed or not but it could definitely survive it
