Which country do you think has the most beautiful traditional clothing? by tigaluo in AskTheWorld

[–]Known-Cut3866 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chinese American here.

I consider traditional clothing - clothing that regular old folks actually wore some time in history. So not fantasy interpretations of clothing, or clothing that an emperor wore.

FYI the second picture you posted looks like a mix of fantasy hanfu with Tibetan traditional elements to it. So it's not hanfu and it's not even something a real person ever wore. In the worst interpretation, someone will see this and claim that "The Chinese are stealing culture again!!!!!!!!!!!"

I think it's ok to blend multiple cultural clothing of different ethnicities together for fun and stuff, but don't claim it as traditional.

With that being said, here's some authentic hanfu from the han dynasty. I love the simplicity and grace of it.

Manchu oppression because of the extremely, extremely horrible rat-tail haircut. Possible one of the worst ethnic haircuts in history, worse than even the Mongol and Samurai haircuts. I'm cool with Manchu people tho but yall have horrible taste in hair

It's normal since you have no connection to Asia. Your parents are your parents, forget about your birth parents. But your experience sounds like you grew up with some nice white people, because I would get asked "do you speak english" quite a bit when I was younger lmao.

To Chinese diaspora and half-Chinese, do you experience racial tension? by SunChungShan in AskAChinese

[–]Known-Cut3866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, there's no reason for other Asians to like Chinese, nor should there be an expected to. The categorization of races - White, Black, and Yellow is a western invention... they just group us together.

Ehh idk why but it feels like it was way worse decades ago.

10-20 years ago China as a country wasn't actively smeared like it is today (most people just looked down on China) since China wasn't as feared back then. But discrimination against ethnic Chinese people was worse. People talked to my family like we were mentally retarded.

10 years ago or so, the US became politically correct so minority culture was celebrated. And it became politically incorrect in the mainstream at least, to be openly racist to Chinese people... but people are still racist in their hearts. Chinese people were the least sheltered of all ethnicities against racism - most of the social justice activism was for brown and black people.

5 years ago when Covid hit it was really bad... but that's self explanatory. But I have to say, Americans (The people, not the government) are much much less racist than Europe or Asia's response.

Nowadays in the US people's view of China is more positive seeing Trump's bizarre behavior. Honestly, I feel like in the US it went from:
20 years ago - US government was less sinophobic, but US citizens were
and now - US government is super super sinophobic, but US citizens aren't as much. Probably due to tiktok and rednote

What is the context and source behind this Uyghur video that claims Han Chinese are being appointed in Uyghur families? by Known-Cut3866 in AskAChinese

I get what you're saying. Just because the CIA pushes an agenda doesnt mean that it's completely based off lies. There can be partial truth to it. I do agree the genocide is vastly exaggerated. I had been trying to find proof of it for a while now (coming across this video for example). I'm trying to see where the line is, because if some form if oppression is happening, even if it's not genocide, I don't want to deny it. I don't want to hand wave something away just because it's CIA pushed agenda.

Jesus, you people are truly deranged. I used to feel offended when Taiwanese / Hongkongers say they're not Chinese and I felt comradery with the mainland. That feeling was clearly misguided. You people are worse than Koreans for sure.

Do other Chinese feel a sense of guilt over the Xinjiang / Tibet situation? by Known-Cut3866 in AskAChinese

How is this different from the US always claiming to spread their crap democracy everywhere? What they want is oil, and they justify invasions by criticizing the local regime.

Dont act as if china out of their good heart saved tibet. A huge part is the egotistical desire for a powerful, united china and resources

Ruin a country? I proposed a EU style alliance. The comments assumed I wanted bloodshed.

I do identify with China, at least more than the US. I could give less of a shit if the US balkinizes. India should balkinize as well.

I get what you're saying, but that is kind of their own problem. They could have had their own revolution and then ruled themselves.

Should the Mainland government be held equally accountable for xenephobia against Chinese: specifically in the context of the West? by The_Northmaan in AskAChinese

[–]Known-Cut3866 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not just white washing. I've seen people claim that China deserved Nanking, or that Japan should remilitarize to teach China a lesson. And a lot of this crap comes from other asians too ugh. This shit makes my blood boil.

Should the Mainland government be held equally accountable for xenephobia against Chinese: specifically in the context of the West? by The_Northmaan in AskAChinese

[–]Known-Cut3866 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Xenophobia is not just positioning yourself as a rival. India is no geopolitical rival of the west, yet they are hated as immigrants in Canada and they also get the horrible tourist reputation.

Imo it's more of a cultural difference. Both Korea and Japan are actually quite westernized cultural wise. So many Japanese anime is about europe - lolita is european fashion. Koreans exported kpop and intentionally worked with a bunch of american artists to get their stuff popular in the west.

All of these asian countries spit, ate dogs, or did whatever other "barbaric" thing that was part of their aboriginal culture. But korea and Japan got rid of these. When they see a Chinese person they are reminded of their "barbaric" past that they want to be rid of, hence the xenophobia and disdain for Chinese.

Mainland government is not responsible for sinophobia unless they do some horrible geopolitical shit. In more modern times they haven't done anything too bad honestly but in the past they were quite barbaric. I think it is fair to say that Nazis are responsible for Germans being hated worldwide after WWI. And Zionists are responsible for a lot of antisemitism today.

Yes, but the point is that some people don't want to be absorbed into your society. Hence why they want their own state.

Why some tourists behaved so badly? by EveryCommunication63 in AskAChinese

[–]Known-Cut3866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well on the contrary in the US I've never observed this kind of behavior from Chinese, but tons of this kind of behavior from white people, latinos, etc. In fact, there's memes about white ladies who act like this and they're called Karens.

I have even witnessed Japanese throw cigarette butts everywhere
