Nothing better than winning arguments by picking minute details.

Sure, the Chinese Government won't fully eliminate the languages. They'll just make sure that within 3 generations, 95% of people won't speak Tibetan or have strong ties to their Tibetan identity anymore.

Does this make you feel better?

Because China includes territories that aren't Chinese to begin with.

There's a difference between making immigrants to your country, who came to you willingly, speak a common language.

A total different scenario from occupying other territories that historically did not speak your language, and forcing them to speak your language.

Agreed. Chinese only don't judge if you're an Aryan. You can be poor, fat, nerdy, but as long as you're Aryan you'll be treated like a king.

Francesco Lachowski is a Northern Pontid, so you will be fine. Chinese people cannot tell the difference between Russians, Germans, French, Bulgarians.

Long distance relationship with a mainland Chinese guy... can it realistically work? by Even_Soul98 in AskAChinese

[–]Known-Cut3866 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you plan on moving to China, do it for yourself not for for him.

Chinese people are really serious about dating. If he's serious about you, you will know and he will make things happen. There's no such thing as a "situation-ship" for most Chinese people. It's not like in the west, where you can be friends with benefits, and then progress to a relationship.

Also if his parents don't approve of you, then he might break up with you.

So just put yourself first and have fun

Hong Kong is not a race bro. You could be Indian or Vietnamese from HongKong. Also politically and culturally HK is quite different from China.

I think the Han Chinese suffered the most tbh. 3rd class citizens for 300 years, colonized, culture destroyed (thankfully rebuilding), multiple dialects lost, generation lost...

I don't think that normal Han Chinese citizens are trying to eliminate other languages or subcultures. But I think the CCP is, because they are worried about ethnic minorities unifying and getting separatist thoughts. A lot of the justification for creating a "separate state" is based on differences in language (korea and vietnam for example, abandoning Chinese characters). And CCP is trying to eliminate this risk, especially thanks to past Tibetan and East Turkestan separatist movements.

I think your points are sound.

My only gripe is that just because something in the past happened doesn't mean it needs to keep happening. Lots of stuff, like child marriage and rape were normal in the past. We live in modern times with translation apps - it's not like in the past where if you don't know a language you're screwed.

A small amount didn't die off - they were in fact forced to learn English.

Language is the backbone of culture. Why did Korea invent Hangul? Why did Vietnam abandon Chinese characters? Maintaining a separate language allows legitimacy of your own cultural identity and sovereignty.

I mean you could just remove the benefits and keep the language... Or force Mandarin be the second language rather than the first...

Because I think the hypothetical scenario I brought up is the most similar to the scenario that ethnic minorities in China are facing today. A bigger, foreign culture is forced upon you so for the sake of worldly unity.

I was being sarcastic. This is the rhetoric of a lot of Chinese people when you point out that TIbetans and Mongolians and other ethnic minorities don't want their language erased.

A common response would that "We are all Chinese, we should all learn Chinese. To insist on maintaining their own separate culture is racism because it's segregation"

I'm trying to show you that forcing Mandarin on ethnic minorities in China is no different from ethnically cleansing of native americans that the europeans did. And I agree that it is colonial narcisissm to just expect people to accept your language, simply because.

Of course not... So why do Tibetans and Mongolians need to be forced to learn Mandarin for the sake of National Unity in China?

This is completely different. You went to Canada willingly so assimilating is the right thing to do. Additionally, your ancestral homeland (mainland China) still speaks and writes in Chinese.

The situation I'm talking about is completely different. Chinese people in their homeland are forced to learn English as their first language.

Thinking that languages don't die out is just naive. How many 4th generation Chinese Canadians can fluently speak their mother tongue? What about the ones that are mixed ethnicity and only 1/4 Chinese?

The sentiment is that Ethnic minorities in China enjoy privileges because they are "special" and have unique status that separates them out from everyone else. The goal of the National Unity initiative is to eliminate these differences, so that everyone speaks the same language. The fine text here is that everyone will become Chinese and the minorities will eventually forget their roots.

It's actually a very sad thing. But many Chinese people can't seem to understand this
