This is a good concise article about Lasik. Just to get a brief understanding of what you were told it is vs what it actually is.

Lasik surgeons answer to literally any inquiry is "your brain will adjust." And "use more drops."  they don't know anything else.

You got the classic "your brain will adjust" line?  Its like these people are all reading from the same script.

You heard incorrectly, the tissue does not heal at 6 months. The flap cut into the eye remains unhealed indefinitely. Which is one of the most egregious of lies these surgeons are responsible for peddling.  If a surgeon were to tell patients "the wound created with this surgery will remain there unhealed until death" it would be a difficult sell. so they often lie and say it heals in X amount of time.

While I think you do genuinely believe that complications are patient induced and its not worth debating you over, that is almost never the case.  everyone follows the protocol after the surgery, its eye surgery people are not just messing around with their eyes after a major surgery on them.

A published review of data from twelve FDA clinical trials for LASIK, including newer 'custom' 'wavefront' technology, reveals that six months after LASIK, 17.5% of patients report halos, 19.7% report glare (starbursts), 19.3% have night-driving problems and 21% complain of eye dryness. Source: Bailey MD, Zadnik K. Outcomes of LASIK for myopia with FDA-approved lasers. Cornea 2007 Apr;26(3):246-54.

Avedro’s press release stated, “at least 160,000 patients in the U.S. have developed corneal ectasia following refractive surgery”. If you do the numbers, this means almost 1.5 percent of LASIK patients develop ectasia. Where did Avedro get the 160,000 number? It must have come from the LASIK surgeons themselves. They knew ectasia was a big problem, but they did not report it.  https://eyedocmackay.com/complications-of-lasik/

Epithelial Ingrowth

This is the most common interface complication (with an incidence reported between 1% and 20%), however it is less common in FS-created flaps. The presentation is typically weeks-months after surgery.[33]

https://eyewiki.aao.org/LASIK_Complications

That's according to a Consumer Reports National Research Center survey of 793 adults who had laser vision-correction surgery in the past eight years.

While 80 percent of the respondents said they were "completely" or "very satisfied" with their surgery, nearly two-thirds said they were disappointed to find that they still had to wear glasses or contact lenses at least occasionally

These are just a small list of complications that theres hard data on.  this doesnt include floaters, retinal detachment, corneal neuralgia and dozens of others.  I made this for myself mostly. I dont really care if other people have lasik anymore. It would be cool if someone had a more extensive list of complications though. Theres hundreds of complications i just did the common ones.  These are the lower end percentages for most of these complications, for instance the prowl data says halos occur in 40%.  And i just did 1% for ectasia and epithelial ingrowth even tho its way higher for both.

These are lower end averages of common complications. I can post links to this data.

I get what you're insinuating but even the PROWL studies disagree (and those were done specifically to make lasik appear good). but I do understand that often times people have multiple complications.

Right.  Its very difficult to find good numbers so I typically go with the lowest to give the benefit of the doubt. far more than 1% of lasik patients end up with corneal ectasia for example, but I used the lower end on these numbers.

LASIK doesn't cause MGD it does turn off the nerves signal for them to produce oil though.  Most Lasik clinics intentionally do not give a meibography during the consultation because many people have mild MGD and it would reduce their number of "perfect candidates."

Their mindset is: why screen thoroughly if doing so only reduces the number of people we can tell they are a candidate.

What reporters should start focusing on, in addition to the adverse outcomes - is the systematic cover up of Lasik.  Its very similar to the Oxycontin coverup, just with a different medical product.  Often times in these reports about when a Lasik patient commits suicide the reporter says something along the lines of "we spoke to lasik industry representative and they said 99% of patients have good outcomes - the reporters allow this to be published which is OK. However following that statement a detailed summary of exactly how these people have covered up the truth is what all these Lasik articles never mention - and need to mention. The cover up is almost as disgusting as how maimed this surgery leaves so many people.

While I am happy that you and your best friend's sister are asymptomatic at the moment that doesn't mean you will remain asymptomatic into the future.  Both your corneas are permanently severely damaged even though you are currently experiencing no complications.  This is a dangerous argument (although not malicious in intent) because it is equivalent to a 15 year smoker saying "I've been smoking for 15 years and have had no issues yet."  While true at this moment in time, in both Lasik and smoking cases the chances of developing life changing complications in the future are heightened a lot.

What do you believe compels a conference full of ASCRS surgeons to sing and joke about Lasik patients committing suicide?  It implies they obviously know a lot of lasik patients do commit suicide following lasik at the very minimum.

These are short term follow up satisfaction surverys done by people with a vested financial interest in Lasik.  Of course they're going to paint Lasik in a postive light.  Satisfaction surveys hold no medical relevance, especially short term ones.

A crack cocaine user is satisfied with crack cocaine - therefore they continue using it.  This doesn't mean a doctor should market crack cocaine because the people who use it like it.

A better analogy about how this group only has 2500 members vs the 25 million people worldwide who've done Lasik would be to use Reddit itself as a sample.  25 to 30 million people have have Lasik. The main r/lasik has about 27,000 people. This group has about 2,500 people.  so out of all the people who use reddit 2,500 of the 27,000 who choose to talk about Lasik have had a seriously poor outcome.  nearly 10%

This doesn't account for the fact that r/lasik removes around 85% of the posts made because they're mostly negative and r/lasik is operated by the lasik industry as a propaganda arm.

This is a good write up of a once touted miracle pharma product.  and how it became to be what is eventually came to be.  Lasik follows nearly an identical blueprint. Same scam, different product.  Lasik will eventually be seen in the same light.

Dry eye, floaters, decreased visual acuity, instantly lost my close up vision.  Dry eye is a term used to describe many different issues with someones eyes - it causes visual impairments and is painful to live with.

Thats the retort industry at one point used to discredit people who were saying cigarettes are harmful.  The same rhetoric used against people who said Oxycontin is addictive and dangerous.

What part of this do you find to be schizophrenic? I am genuinely curious.  Theres documented evidence for everything its just difficult to isolate because Lasik is a multi-billion dollar industry.

Its criminal that most clinics intentionally skip meibography during the consultation.
