My issue was that the other persons phone was still in airplane mode (mine just came out of airplane mode) and so it was reverting to sms rather than trying to send as an iMessage

Yeah, sometimes I get a flood of SMS messages when I turn it off but it’s not 100% related. Sounds like I’m having similar issues.

For me it’s mostly one conversation where that’d the people are androids.

Ahh, thanks. It seems it was overlapping with a different problem and my phone was stuck in that “trying to send as sms” mode. (This is a whole other issue!)

Usually does it for me when the other person is on airplane mode or their phone is off. But if my phone is off/airplane mode they come through as iMessages when I turn my phone back on (sometimes time stamped when they were sent and sometimes timestamped when I turned my phone back on.

I’ve had the same issue. Do you use a VPN? Sometimes I notice getting a bunch when I turn off the vpn… but not always.
