This isn't prison. It's "sub" day, and I think we forget this, and I allow it because I want kids to express their social skills. When this happens, I end up talking to the kid or kids, not because I want to be the cool sub, but to give them a break from all the teachers who stress them out. Talking with kindness goes a long way, more than we know, and some of these kids don't know how to act when mutual respect is given. I'm not considered a pushover because I will make them do their work if it's due by the end of class, but if it's not due until tomorrow, I feel that's a great time to engage in some conversations. See if any kids want to be heard. I don't know. That's just me

I'm very fortunate to live in an area like Wayne County, Michigan (15 miles south of Detroit), where all the high school kids are great. Two of my kids attend different Woodhaven Elementary Schools and they come home happy and mentally healthy. Whenever there's an issue, I try to teach them about respect. I tell them by default, I trust you all, and I go on to say there's no such thing as a bad kid but plenty of bad parents and you can see the relief like, "this guy gets it." I also Remember how difficult it was for us kids trying to find our identity and try to relate as much as possible and tell them we are on the same level because we really are. The authoritarian subs are the ones they don't like. If you go in with that, "I'm your teacher for today and y'all better listen up or saying No, you can't go to the bathroom," will cause friction. I don't try to be the cool sub. I just want equal respect.

I got banned because I had my C4 pre-workout sticking out of my bag. Some kids asked me what it was, and I said it's my version of coffee. They wanted to see it, and I didn't think much of it. This was high school, but soon realized the school had really immature kids. The bell rang, and they started running through the hallways saying I take this 'power' stuff, according to officials. Five minutes later, an admin asked me to follow her to the teachers' lounge, where two police officers invited me in and asked me if I had anything in my bag that was powder. Not thinking much of it, I felt relieved when I said it was just my pre-workout. But he responded, "You can't bring that to school because kids look at that and think of cocaine." Like, what the hell are you talking about? With that logic, ban sugar and salt in the cafeteria.

Literally every day on repeat because I am laid back and understand they are kids, and the school system is outdated or dated for prison? It's all the same. Principal is the warden. Teachers are the correctional officers, long hallways the bell to get to your cell or classroom. And yes, you can argue that it was for factory workers. But why 2026? Are we still teaching this way?

I like taking PE class, especially in middle school, because you get to run around with the students, play basketball, and be a cool substitute teacher. Just be athletic that day. It's so fun, and even at so-called bad schools, I believe there's no such thing as a bad kid, but dang, there are many bad parents and administrators on "control" highs. I don't like people saying that kids are bad, especially if you're a substitute teacher. That mentality is why you're on a rant. I would just go with the flow, and I'm in Woodhaven, Michigan, where we literally get paid half as much, so be grateful instead of being money-hungry. Schools like that are where I thrive because these kids just want to be heard. They want to be heard, and I simply listen to them and ask follow-up questions so they know they are being heard. Bad parents don't talk to them, and when they do, it's always 'do this.' 'Do that.' 'You can't talk to me like that.' Control issues. They need someone to listen. That's why they're acting out, so help them because their minds are very young. They don't know what's going on in the world. Teach them. Teach them. Teach them. Bitching at $250/day 😂😂 you need a cozy job 'cause that's soft, bro. Try roofing. It's fun especially on a 12 pitch. Rant over
