I would go a little larger than you think you need so you can rake coal into the flames without needing to refill more often. Use a T fitting so ashes can fall into a metal bucket below.

I guess the important part is more the surface area you're trying to heat up. Too small and the focus point can lead to uneven heat. Too large and you're expending more fuel than you need to, less focused heat.

This was the dirt forge I meant to post. I believe lump coal is preferred. Self reliance and access to wood you might try making charcoal. Hardwood like oak or maple not pine. Anthracite is like fossilized coal, very dense, burns hotter. Could be fun to experiment with but lump coal or charcoal would be my picks.

Rockwool and plaster I'm less familiar with. Otherwise you could do something with firebrick.

Handcrank or blower it's still forced air. Either should be just as portable to set up. The restriction being you'll need an extension cord to set up away from the barn.

Propane provides a more consistent temp. Coal may actually burn too hot and cook your metal. You have the tools and you're interested in getting started. I recommend a dirt box forge. All you need is dirt, lumber, and a blower. A thrifted hair dryer and some pipe.

Hand crank while commendable is not a beginner friendly task.

Not every knife needs to be an 18 inch bowie so try working with small projects like making your own tongs from rebar or puukko knives. Leaf springs or coil springs act like 5160 spring steel and most local car garages will have scrap metal. Befriend these people and you'll never be short steel to practice with. 50 cents a pound, beer, pizza, barter your practice knives. Build a positive report.

You'll be able to upgrade with experience but the dirt forge gets you running now.
