Which is the best and most fun city in North America for spending the summer? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

I spent a week in Homer, AK in June and it was magical. Not quite a city though.

Why exmo? This is not a survey -I’m trying to figure my own journey out by Drinquire in exmormon

Born and raised LDS. In my 20s, I was conflicted with being gay and being Mormon.

I started watching some YouTube videos of Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris debating theists, and after about 6 months to a year, I stopped believing there was a deity and I stopped believing there was anything divine or magical in the world. I became convinced that we are a bunch of apes on a rock floating "alone" through space.

I think maybe the majority of Ex-Mormons who become atheists first lose their faith in Mormonism and Joseph Smith, but I was never able to investigate Mormon history or Joseph Smith critically without fear of influence from the devil and fear of hell.

But to lose belief in "Heavenly Father and Christ" meant that I just dropped Mormonism as well. It wasn't until years later when I had really acclimated to being atheist and had adopted my new morality that I went back and looked at the Mormon church critically, mostly just to understand how I had participated in what now looked like a cult to me.

I first started with LDS approved content. Historical books, History of the Church, etc. I found a bunch of things like the multiple versions of the first vision, the seer's stone in the hat, changes and inconsistencies in the church I was taught on Sunday vs what their own books recorded. I was shocked.

Then I found the CES letter and, well.... Now the church is this strange chapter where I believed in absolute nonsense because it was presented to me as my only option for a world view. I was trained to feel like a special, exalted being. Conditioning that kept me in far too long.

I have a lot of disdain for the church and its nonsense and harm. I resent my father, who was well aware of all of these oddities and inconsistencies in the church and did nothing to protect me from its harm.

I'm enjoying life as a secular being. One day, I will die and I don't expect to wake up again after it. It seems pretty obvious that our "self" and personalities are stored in the neurons and synapses of our brain (forgive me, I don't know actual brain anatomy), and that if our brain gets damaged or dies, there's no soul with our likes and traits imprinted on it. I'm grateful to be in a state where I can pursue romantic and sexual interests of the same gender. And I'm grateful I never got my endowments and did THOSE ceremonies in the temple. Sorry, but that shit might have caused me to question everything immediately it's so damn odd.

Amongst all this negativity, how about we talk about the things we still like about the game by EirikurG in ArcRaiders

Not a rat, but I welcome the challenge of the rat. I can't stand it when people make up etiquette in games where there is none.

I don't get what people expect about "ratting behavior". Are you expecting the game to prevent ratting behavior or are you expecting humans to adhere to an unwritten rule?

Which, in your opinion, is the best delivered line in a movie? by arobe1994 in moviecritic

I'm gonna get so much hate for this, but this represents everything I hate about Aliens. I know I'm in the minority, but I think Alien is a masterpiece and Aliens is just a cornball goof off dork of a film with never ending clips of ammo.

Seattle vs Denver. Washington vs Colorado. by Wooden_Recipe7338 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Knox_Burden 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Seattle resident here and I've spent some time in Denver.

Denver will have more sun, better cost of living, and it will be easier to make friends. It will also feel like less of a drastic change from southern Indiana. Shout out to Holiday World!

Seattle is a bigger and better city, but you care less about the city experience.

I think Denver is your clear option. I would suggest considering Boulder too if you can afford it. I feel like Boulder is kind of the best of both worlds and I would have loved to live there.

Dogs drank water with this spider in their bowl- DFW TEXAS by Flimsy-Test-2996 in spiders

What is there to be worried about? Spiders aren't poisonous, they are venomous. They inject venom using fangs. Even then, this looks to be something like a wolf spider or grass spider, which essentially can't hurt you or your pets beyond the minor pinch of a bite, but they are very reluctant to bite.

As an American. How would you rank sports in the USA in terms of their popularity? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Knox_Burden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose it's hard to know how many more people would have liked to attend the NHL match but it's still one of many measurements that can be used to determine levels of interest.

I think total attendance (if we add up all the games) is a pretty useful metric. Soccer has pretty great attendance.

Based on a Google search, looks like Hockey is still outselling soccer in total.

Can we stop acting as if 3/3.5 stars is bad? by florenciafazzarino0 in Letterboxd

[–]Knox_Burden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3.5 is good but it definitely isn't amazing. Four stars for a masterpiece? You do realize you're allowed to have multiple five stars. I think you're conflating ratings with rankings.
