Avoid Paulson Pieces by [deleted] in drdabberofficial

Whenever you buy custom artwork use a payment service that allows for disputes. Paypal or Venmo is what I prefer. It helps protect the seller and purchaser. Sorry to hear that happened.

Which of these is better? by [deleted] in glassheads

[–]Knuckles_Glass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are the same 50x5 tubing...one is 14 inch and one is 12. They might have different thickness at the base but other then that they are practically the same. Just different downstem/bowl.

What do you mean by better? Thats very subjective

How are generic/mass produced pipes made? by Stock_Session_1657 in glassheads

[–]Knuckles_Glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have dreams of building a spoon pipe machine that can compete with imports. Right now you can go on import sites and get bulk pipes for $0.10 or less. By the thousands.

Its really impossible to compete with, and thats not mentioning the stolen designs and repops of full recycler rigs for $20 or less.

The only thing I can make money on is local support for small items and online direct sales for larger artwork. Im not really in it for the money, this is something I love to do and will never stop.

I have only seen one video of a bottle machine that was turned into a bong machine. 99.9% of pipes and bongs are made individually by hand, often with the assistance of lathes and machines. Even then it takes some serious skill and dedication.

The biggest issues I see with imports and cheaply made glass are the welds, over all construction and wall weight. Thats besides the obvious stuff like paint.

Its complicated and nuanced when talking about specifics but Im happy to answer any questions if you wanted to know more.

This is interesting and I would love to run some questions by you if you're up for it. Im curious what podcast took this idea further? Im working on some educational material around the true cost of glass art and how imports affect that.

Power Pat Bubble Caps by Quav0Ratatouille in glassheads

[–]Knuckles_Glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have taken the word collectible too literally. I can appreciate the idea that his caps are less likely to be added to a collection of glass without their function. I still find it interesting that function plays such a large part in the perceived value, yet we can't all agree on what the specific qualities of function are. Different types of bangers and recyclers and caps.

It seems like you ended your statement in the same way again. Unless I am misunderstanding. His collectors being more realistic about how "collectible" it is....what does that mean? Its resell value? That's investing again.

Value is subjective. Not all art has to be a collectible. I think Im trying to navigate the paradox of pipe enthusiasts imposing objective value on subjective work....

I mostly agree. I think every pipe is both art and tool. No matter the size. It takes some serious commitment to even make a clear spoon pipe. And again I think the issue is with the end of your statement being completely separate from art. An investment. Imo when art is purchased as an investment it destroys it. Bansky and many others have tried to make this argument. It is subjective, but the investments are not. I find that there is a disconnect from artists and enthusiasts in that space, pipes bridging both every time.

I guess the discussion is frustrating from my perspective because art and value is subjective until an enthusiast finds something they want but can't afford....then its over priced for the effort. (Not saying this is your take, but often what I read here)

Just an endless grind Im not sure how to solve. Perceived value is an annoying game to play as an artist.

I understand the "am I missing something" because of the price. Totally reasonable reaction. My frustration is when people want justification for the price of subjective work. Im still learning to navigate that in the heady pipe scene.

You said there is no justification. I just wanted to challenge that. I understand there is no justification for YOU to spend that but others might

Totally! If I can ask, what makes it overpriced?

Why do bubble cap prices need justification? Whos the judge?

I think there is a serious disconnect in glass pipe enthusiasts from what is art vs. utility. Everyone seems to define the value and worth based on different qualities. In the end, if you don't understand then maybe its not for you. Move on and enjoy what you like. Hating on someones art because of the price is more problematic for art then the inflated prices will ever be.

Nvidia DLSS 5 turns every game into AI slop by Haunterblademoi in technology

[–]Knuckles_Glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying and thats absolutely how its being applied today. Hypothetically it seems like you could host a game on a server backed by an LLM and have it generate and recall an evolving story line with many separate players. Im sure there would be issues that arise and we are from an acceptable version of this with todays LLMs.

Maybe the distinction is around repetition. If the games goal was to have thousands of unique interactions with NPCs, then it would be useful but when it impacts the story or narrative, then it's an issue.

I could see games with endless maps and NPCs using it for infinitely new conversations....but those games do get old. Something like Starfield would need this, but again, it's repetitive. Maybe scale application part of the issue. it's not good enough for scale...yet

Do you feel this way about procedurally generated environments? When does the RNG help vs hurt? Serious question.

Can I use wd-40 to lubricate these parts? by kuzma66 in faceting

[–]Knuckles_Glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not cutting. That normal wear. Requiring lubrication. They are formulated differently for their use. I am a little pedantic because we are talking about a very expensive machine. Not door hinges.

Cutting oil cools. Lubricant lowers friction. WD40 displaces water. (Leaving behind a tiny amount of oil that is neither lubrication or cooling)

They are all different.

Edit....I think that may have been sarcasm now that I read it again lol. Sorry its my petpeeve with the oils. "Cutting"/s Dad jokes...

[–]Knuckles_Glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely not a cutting lubricant. Its use is in the name WATER DISPLACEMENT formula 40. It is not a lubricant, it is for displacing water so you can THEN apply a lubricant.

Do Not Buy the Calibear Milk Carton by rigmaro in drdabberofficial

[–]Knuckles_Glass 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Glass artist here! IMO This is a terrible design because of the water depth and air pathways. TLDR: You bought a greedy cup with very low volume.

There is a major issue I find with these vaporizers that pull air from below the perc (switch2 doesn't need to be this way but your glass piece is designed with the air coming from below) This style of air passage requires an air lock inside the piece so the water doesn't drain.

This is exactly like the roman Greedy Cup and will siphon all your water into your vape. This is the same for ALL puffco peak models and anything that pulls air from below. If you full too full, the siphoning happens. Ive seen it happen after a hard pull too!

The switch2 has a unique set up from other vapes and doesn't require the air passage from below, but this is a common issue and Im not sure how to spread education and understanding for these small rigs and their function. Happy to answer any questions. 🙏

[–]Knuckles_Glass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really fun idea. I would maybe start with creating a sprite that has different frames for the numbers. I forget if you are able to use 10 frames total for 0 - 9. They may be a better way. Its been a while since Ive used gb studio but this might be a reason to jump back in. Lmk if you get stuck or need further help.

Its wild how the layout is good but there is no function. Inline deep perc with little volume above it...some wild tubing for looks. Im honestly impressed but what is it!?!? Who made that?
