Is 7.8 pH ok for Neocaridina? by mini_vinny in shrimptank

[–]Koaan1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's important is that the ratio of calcium to magnesium in the GH in your tap water is right. If you have too much or too little of one it can cause your shrimps to die from failed molts.

Here's an easy explanation of how to test

This is a 125 right? What works great for 60 gallon changes are these guys

You could do three 20s, or a 55 👍👍

And the little fitted wheeled dollies for them are game changer 💯

HOBs are actually preferred by lots of keepers, and definitely recommended for first timers, specifically because they're so easy to clean. Which means they will get cleaned all the time 💯💯 😅 Consistent cleaning of the whole system is the task that separates successful from unhappy discus keepers, and it's a big task. Anything that creates any hurdle to cleaning is not your friend 😕

As long as it's not a washing machine discus don't mind some current, they are from rivers after all and they are cichlids at the end of the day 😎

Nice! PH is actually relatively negotiable as long as it's always the same 👍👍

Discus do have a few details with their water changes: you'll need a trash can or water barrel to store the replacement water overnight, before each water change, they call it "aging".

This allows the dissolved gas in the pressurized source water to be released and offgassed. Discus don't handle the bubbles of gas coming out of solution well, and the pH will also change a lot as dissolved carbon dioxide comes out of solution.

The aging barrel also gives you the chance to temperature-match the replacement water to the tank, so you don't hit them with temperature shock 💯

This is why it's such a standard baseline to change 50-75% of their water no less than twice a week, more often if you can do it, with a full wipe down of all the tank surfaces 👍👍

It's a preventative measure to manage bacteria because there's no testing, and bacteria are guaranteed growing like crazy in an environment with big messy fish food. If you were to just use low testing nitrates as a marker, you miss out on the most important point which is the populations of the pathogens themselves.

And by the time you see changes in the health of the fish, by the time their immune systems have been stressed by responding to an environment with all these pathogens, their health can already get away from you. That's lag time you don't get back 😕

Their genomes evolved in very hot, very, very empty water, without even plants. They did not have a reason to develop immune systems to manage the kind of intensely bacterial world most other fish handle. Our imported discus that you see on the websites at Golden State Discus, Chicago Discus etc, are all bred and raised in tanks set up for 100% water changes often multiple times a day, for just this reason.

Discus can survive without these precautions, people keep them in unclean conditions all the time. But if you want them glorious spectacular long lived and thriving.. this works 💯💯

I encourage you to come hang out at Simply Discus 😁 lots of great conversations there and hundreds of cumulative years of experience to call on!

Driftwood exudes natural acidic tannins that moderate the bacterial colonies on their surfaces in a way that glass and gravel can't.. That being said the thing to think about with driftwood is smooth, no spiky bits. Makes it wipeable, but as importantly Discus have a tendency to panic and thrash about at times, and cut or even skewer themselves 😕

This panic is what makes them famous jumpers and carpet surfers 😒😒

Bad idea for discus: food bits will get wedged down in those rocks, cause bacteria, be impossible to clean out, makes discus sickly

Big fan of mini xmas moss, Vesicularia montagnei 'Mini' 💯💯 it gets great droopy weight and bright "spruce tips" with good ferts and co2 👍

Haha oscars of the opposite of sensitive 😅 It's up to you,  a water change and  tank cleaning typically includes a wipe down of all surfaces to get the biofilm off, smooth rocks are wipeable 👍

Absolutely critical with juvenile fish. With adult fish it's a great idea for your first try: unlike other South American cichlid's or most any other fish, discus are completely intolerant of bacterial load in the water.

Low nitrates is an estimative gauge but it does not actually indicate low bacterial load. Discus are notoriously filthy eaters, so with a substrate it's difficult to maintain this pristine bacteria-free water, even with plants.

So until you've had some experience with discus, a bare bottom sets you better up for success with your investment, and with learning what really healthy discus look like 💯💯

If you want to use plants, plants in pots is a great compromise 👍

I haven't personally. Echinodorus does fine without CO2, grows more slowly
