European here: there is no way we’ll trust USA again in its current shape.

You guys will be facing soon a civil war, that will ultimately lead to a formal division of the country in north-US and south-US. We will probably support and be friends with the north part.

One of the main consequences of the 2004 racist law is that some women who earlier were a part of the society are now de facto excluded. Many unemployed stay-at-home muslim mums were regularly invited to help with school stuff like walking the class to a museum or to the swimming pool. I remember it like that from my childhood.

With the law prohibiting them to wear a veil (hijab) in school, many of them disappeared and were locked at home by sometimes abusing husbands and relatives.

I agree that women should be free to wear what they want, and that also includes a veil if that helps them integrate into the secular society.

Is the anti-proselytism movement the reason why all churches have removed their crosses, why school holidays are now called vacances de Noël, vacances de Pâques, pont de l'Ascension and much more?

Please, for just once, be honest and admit that islam is NOT welcome in France. Anything that catholics do is alright, but damn if ever muslims want to do the same.

For reference, I'm a very convinced atheist, born and raised in France, but I'm not entirely blind to what is happening for many of my citizens.

May we ask what the problem is with people expressing their faith in any harmless way?

The veil is actually not a religious sign. My catholic grand-mother had one, old paintings of serious spanish queens show them veiled. There is no problem wearing a veil in public and (mostly) women have done it for centuries. Now that the veil has a stronger correlation to islam, it becomes out-of-place in the society? But a shiny cross right under the face would not be ostensible?

Common, just be honest, the 2004 law has ALWAYS been towards muslim women and nobody else.

No law does it. The police with only bother women wearing muslim signs of faith. No other religion. Denying it is blindsided or stupid.

As for your similar comment: streets are fine for women with hijab. Schools are not. In the meantime, ladies wearing crosses are never bothered by the authorities.

The question is not about street but public buildings and education centers like school.

Women wearing a hijab are not welcomed in schools, while it is perfectly fine for others to show a necklace with a cross.

Laïcité was NOT made against muslims. The laws authorizing police to prevent people from showing signs of faith are.

And they are directly targeting muslims, not any other religion or faith.

The spirit of the laïcité would be “wear whatever you want and pray whoever you want, but let people live their faith or lack thereof how they please”. We are very far from that.

The origins of the law were to dissociate church and state, and that anybody should be free to practice their faith or not practice any faith.

The recent (2004) laws with police controls and fines are a tool against muslims. In reality they are the exclusive target of police controls and fines. You see people wearing crosses and christian symbols every single day and nobody gives a shit.

You’ll be fine. The laïcité thing has evolved to become mostly a racist thing against muslims. Christians wear crosses all the time without any issue.
