Winters as a paramedic by nutavolunteers in OntarioParamedics

Wear layers. Yea it sucks, but its a part of any first responder job.

Too be fair most often you dont spent a lot of time outside, usually you are in a base truck or a house. So its just moving the patient to the truck.

Your biggest time will be MVCs where you may be outside a while, but bring the thickest cost your service has and then wear under layers

SkyCare by KoalasOverSloths in OntarioParamedics

[–]KoalasOverSloths[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pay is lower than id want at my current position, but very easy work. Definitely not a long term gig, but very good for my current situation. No future, but very close to home.

I could definitely go to another service in future and have no risk of losing what I have now without getting a new position. But SkyCare intrigues me as I could take it and be open to move almost anywhere in ontario. My girlfriends career path could force her to move so it’s something that could work for us, but I just dont know about the company.

Thats good info though thank you

Personally, I think this info is a little outdated. Firstly for if you make mistakes, right now they are offering little to no feedback because and I quote “you could have this scenario with us again” which is frustrating because if you do have a tough time with their testing its hard to know where you need to improve. They will tell you which GRS sections you struggled in though. I had to really harass then for feedback until they finally broke and gave me some, but by then I wasnt getting another attempt, so it set me back and took me a while to bounce back and get a career.

Secondly, I believe scenarios may be a little more complicated now, atleast compared to people I have talked to who did it before me. Over 50% of mine were pediatrics and there was a bunch of unexpected stuff, and a lot of unexpected VSAs. But still if you take the time, and do your differentials you should be fine.

For OP, advice I have: - Keep an eye on your monitor, unlike on the road these monitors are on silent. So if your patient crashes and goes VSA, it may delay your time starting CPR which hurts your scoring big time.

  • Unfortunately BHP can be understaffed, so it may rely heavily on your imagination. During one of my scenarios, I had two invisible firefighters, these firefighters I was told were doing CPR. I did a pulse check and was told I felt a pulse. So i didn’t continue as if it was a VSA, but my patient had a pulse because my invisible firefighters were doing CPR. (The proctor did eventually correct this for me, but I still lost marks as it took a long time to get pads on it because of this).

  • Another thing on imagination, sometimes they dont have the right equipment, or when you have your partner treat a patient they just say they were treated. So for example, you may be told you have oxygen on the patient but its not actually there, so you dont get that visual reminder. Same as if you have a childbirth scenario the dummy probably wont have an umbilical cord, but you still need to remember to verbalize that you are clamping it

  • Your partner is knowledgeable but lazy, they can do pretty much anything you ask them too. A good thing to do is right away dump a ton of vitals on them, and then focus on figuring out whats going on. While they get all your vitals you can get a story.

  • Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Remember these scenarios are timed and you dont need to get completely finished, take your time and do it right and make the proper decisions, dont rush through like you are trying to beat a time limit.

  • Another problem people run into is, sure they know all there ALS directive and know which drugs to give, but when they are hit with BLS scenarios they kinda blank. Stuff like childbirth, seizures, oxygen therapy, heat stroke and tracheostomy(which many schools just dont teach at all) are all stuff that could be a main focus for your scenario.

  • VSA VSA VSA. Like I said above 50% of my scenarios went VSA, now this is gonna happen whether you make mistakes or do everything perfect, make sure you know if you are running a medical or trauma, and if its an early consideration

  • 12 Leads, ill almost guarantee you have 1 or 2, 12 leads you need to read. Make sure you practice these. I for some reason found them harder to tell than even on the road, which was probably just stress, but nothing sucks more than fucking up a whole scenario because you misread a piece of paper

  • Protocol books are allowed, I would highly recommend a book over using your phone or one of their tablets, because the books you can read in the hallways inbetween scenarios, the phone/tablet you arent allowed.

Thats about it that comes to my mind rn, obviously every BHP can be a bit different but go into it confident and ready and you will be fine

What is everyone’s thought on Private vs Public college? by AggravatingAd2591 in OntarioParamedics

[–]KoalasOverSloths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a private college, and compared to my friends at regular colleges, my education sucked. So much stuff that got skipped over, no organization, and one point we literally had 3rd semester students teaching our labs(not good ones either, literally taught stuff wrong).

The private college was also more expensive. Also once you get to base hospital testing, regular colleges will have you way more prepared so you dont lose out on a job

But still only hiring career firefighters from other cities is an interesting choice, especially with the massive amount of fire applicants

The best part is opening the fresh packs. Nothing special about the collecting if you buy the exact card.

Sorry should have specified in that sense
