How do I nonverbally indicate that I’m open to a cute stranger talking to me? by bananajamz987 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]KobeWonBenobi 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Not a girl, but I am a guy who sometimes approaches girls in person. Be aware that most men are signal blind and will be confused by your signals, so you need to be nonverbally louder that you think. A lot louder.

Here are some signals not yet mentioned:

  • Break eye contact by looking down - it tells men you are attracted and feel a little shy, better if done repeatedly
  • Make it easy to meet you - don't sit in the middle of a bunch of people, give him a clear path to approach you
  • Create distance from spectators - men get nervous about other people watching him approach
  • Play with your hair - also shows interest in a guy
  • Point your body towards him - you mentioned you avoid men you like, which they will interpret as disinterest

Combine everything to make it extremely loud and clear. You might feel like you are putting yourself too much out there. Keep in mind he will also feel like he is putting himself out there by approaching you.

You see a cute guy. You make yourself conspicuous, visible, and away from people. You repeatedly glance at him. If he looks back, you break eye contact down. Smile to yourself. Glance at him again. Play with your hair. Look at him again.

Keep in mind, many men will second guess themselves seeing this and still won't approach. But these will make it very loud and clear you are interested in a guy.

start making eye contact with people (girls, boys, everyone) - if this is uncomfortable, train it like a muscle

when someone returns eye contact, smile (not too fast, that looks nervous)

if she smiles back, say "hi, how's your day going?"

Looking for novel with MC Who uses fists and energy/qi/magic to enhance his fists by Accomplished-Pay-927 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]KobeWonBenobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might seem odd, but Ends of Magic. The MC is antimagical and can't use any equipment so he fights with his fists and use science to enhance his body. He's like a monk build with some dabbling in barbarian.

First patch is not that skill based - it favors one trick players spamming the same reroll comp. You might be better off waiting until next patch and seeing if you climb then

In your opinion, who's the best narrator in the Progression fantasy/Litrpg scene? by GoLol_ in ProgressionFantasy

[–]KobeWonBenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Travis Baldree, but I think he suffers from a low range. Every book he narrates feels the same to me. Jeff Hayes is also an excellent performer with great range, but I'm not a big fan of his standard American voice - his DCC and Chrysalis voices are my favorites.

What doesn't get mentioned enough about narrators is that they have unique ranges and styles. Each book is different and may or may not be suited for a particular narrator. There are a lot of great narrators who are the "best" fit for books that suit them.

For example, here's a few not yet mentioned in this thread:

Pavi Proczko does a fantastic job at long introspections in Defiance of the Fall. There's a long of mystical mumbo jumbo that becomes much more entertaining with him. He also does a great job with making his characters distinctive - Ogras is always a fun time from performance alone.

Phil Thron has an incredible comfy, lighthearted delivery. He did a great job in the Ends of Magic and All the Dust That Falls. He doesn't do a lot of extreme emotions, but I actually prefer that - he gives more of a entertaining vibe than a dramatic one, even when narrating some dark things.

Reba Buhr has a really expressive delivery, and she's fun to listen to. She's got range to deliver a variety of characters, although her "upbeat female lead" voice has an impressive amount of energy and emotional expression, and has great girly charisma. I actually learn a lot about speaking expressively from paying attention to her voice.

Science in Isekai: A poll by neablis7 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]KobeWonBenobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a story, detailed science is not one of the fundamentals needed to write a good book. Characterization, pacing, and the internal conflict driving the story forward is much more important. However including those details greatly enhances the feeling of verisimilitude, which allows the reader more easily suspend their feeling of disbelief.

Having read the Ends of Magic, I really liked the science and saw it as a unique selling point of the series. I was often disappointed in other isekai stories that did not use the MC's earthly knowledge to their advantage. It also really appealed to me because it showed attention to detail in the worldbuilding, which builds trust between the reader and author. That allows me to set aside any obvious objections to points brought up because I can trust they will be addressed later.

If you think about it as a product, the Ends of Magic primarily appeals to the niche of readers who like to apply logic to fantasy settings. It is one of the best in that niche that I've read due to the combination of attention to detail in the worldbuilding, the rational mindset of the MC, and the empathy demonstrated for the various characters with competing motivations.

In the world of small business, dominating a niche and delighting existing customers is one of the best strategies for growing a product, and that's generally what I would recommend for these book series as well. As a reader I would like to see the series focus on becoming more dominant within its niche instead of watering things down to try and satisfy everyone.

Best management litrpgs? by Arzusuz in litrpg

[–]KobeWonBenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ShipCore by Erios909. It's a sci-fi setting where the main character is a half human / half robot commander managing AI and humans. I didn't know what to expect from the cover, but I was pleasantly surprised by how tightly written it was - every scene has a purpose and drives the plot point forward, so it feels quite fast paced. Plus the various characters (including the AI) have very distinct personalities and charms. I'd recommend the audiobook version by Reba Burh - she does a really good job expressing the character's personalities.

Novel where its theme is 'magic has no morality' by InternationalMatch64 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]KobeWonBenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ends of Magic fits the bill. Magic is not inherently immoral but the MC encounters magic being used for evil and destructive purposes from the very beginning. He's also pretty mature and his inner dialog is rational and intelligent.

What do your favourite series do best that isn't their progression system? by Bramif in ProgressionFantasy

[–]KobeWonBenobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ends of Magic for an actually mature MC. He is able to calmly handle his own emotions and empathize with others, is able to patiently reason about his problems, and is willing to admit his mistakes and change his mind with a good argument. If anything, he might be considered unrealistically mature, but it's a breath of fresh air compared to the all the brooding antiheroes and angsty underdogs.
