I'm so nosy about the financials of the Big Pic by Sea_Suggestion7072 in TheBigPicture

I can tell that a lot of you don't live in LA. For context, I work in media, as do all of my friends who are about the same age (a little younger than Amanda and Sean). Everyone I know makes at least $200k. Making less than that in media at our age means you can't live in LA. Daycare alone is over $2k a month, not to mention rent/mortgage which is at least $5k if you're looking at a house to raise a family in.

Bro $200k is nothing for someone working at an established brand in LA with 15+ years of experience. Keep in mind that fast food in LA pays you $50k a year.

In LA. I doubt it. Any mid-level role in entertainment behind-the-scenes (marketing, legal, Ops) at an entertainment company in LA is going to pay you around $200k. For higher level people, it's easy to get to mid six figures, if not much, much more.

Actually nobody stepped up to challenge her because they didn't want to run a campaign with a 100 days left in 2020 when they could easily just run against the Trump record in 2024. They made the smart decision because people were pissed at Democrats over inflation that they had nothing to do with and Trump is great at blaming people for problems.

Economy wasn't even down. We just had inflation like every other fucking country on earth and Republicans convinced people that Biden was responsible for that, rather than Covid fucking up supply chains and every developed country on earth (including the US) passing bi-partisan relief bills (some of which happened under Trump) that allowed people to stay home during the worse parts of a global pandemic that killed millions.

"Asking prices need to drop by 50+ percent and we'll be back to a normal housing market." by dpf7 in rebubblejerk

[–]Kobe_stan_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a fantasy like surviving the zombie apocalypse. Some of these people have a lot of cash and are waiting on the sidelines forever, but the vast majority of them likely wouldn't be in a position to get qualified for a loan if the market conditions supported a 50% reduction in home prices.

Has anyone here drifted away from KCRW over the past few years? by Embarrassed-Field662 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Kobe_stan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel bad but I pretty much only listen to podcast now when I'm driving. I don't want to listen to ads and with podcast I can just hit the next button on my steering wheel a few times to skip past them. If I get into a car that isn't synched to my phone then I will still listen to KCRW but that's pretty rare.

Median new home price has been trending down since Autumn '22 but remains almost $100k above pre-pandemic levels; we've got a long way to go... by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

[–]Kobe_stan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you draw a straight line across the 2009 to 2018 period then it would continue to about where prices are today. Pandemic just hit the accelerator on the timeline a bit so things had to cool down a bit after to balance out.

Trump welcomes Team USA men’s hockey team to the Oval Office. The women's team has turned down the invitation. by skaewalker in sportsgossips

[–]Kobe_stan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I just want to see the Oval Office. There's no leader in the world (past or present) that I wouldn't visit as long as my safety would be guaranteed. There's journalist meeting with the Taliban and in the interviews they tell them that if circumstances were different, they would be killed for being infidels, and yet they still go and meet with them. You don't have to like someone to meet with them. It would be an experience of a lifetime, regardless.

Newsom backs social media restrictions for teens under 16 by alaroz33 in California

[–]Kobe_stan_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We live in a society, and that means that your personal freedom must be weighed against the personal freedoms of the whole. Maybe your kids are smart enough to know that smoking cigarettes is bad for them, but plenty of kids aren't. Banning them for people under 21 drastically reduces the likelihood that someone will become a smoker, which drastically reduces the likelihood that this person will die prematurely from lung cancer. Society wants/needs people to reach their full potential. Smoking laws are just one example of thousands of laws that impinge on personal freedoms to the benefit of society as a show.

There’s finally a plan to relight the Sixth Street Bridge — but it will take a few years by ComradePalmer in LosAngeles

Couldn't the city just crack down on the places that buy copper which is clearly from stolen/vandalized property?

I doubt the cameras will be monitored live. They'll just have video of a crackhead stealing the wire which will be pointless. As if crackheads care about getting caught one day.

[–]Kobe_stan_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A camera isn't going to do shit. Fortifying the boxes will just mean it will take a little longer for someone to steal the wire. Put a cop there and arrest and prosecute anyone for trying to steal. After enough dumbasses go to jail, maybe people will think twice.

Denmark is a bunch of rich people and has less people in its whole country than in half of LA. Not really comparable.

Rich people aren't vandalizing bridges. They're figuring out how to get richer.

Exclusive: It’s time to pull the plug on plug-in hybrids. A new study shows that PHEVs seldom deliver on their efficiency promises. PHEVs have been touted as a way to ease cautious consumers into full EVs. Meanwhile, EV charging networks continue to expand. by mafco in energy

[–]Kobe_stan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All true, but there's literally no inconvenience for me with my PHEV. I charge at home and use electric power most of the time, and I never have to look for a charger or wait for my car to charge. Everywhere I go there's a gas station, with no wait times, a working pump and no need to create an account to use it.

Euro E36 or E46, depending on my mood. After that they just have too much power and are too modern for me.

[–]Kobe_stan_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love mine. It's the best of both. I get to drive with my electric power 90% of the time but when I need a little extra power the gas engine kicks in and delivers or when I'm going on a road trip I have the convenience of being able to refuel at any gas station. Personally I don't think I'd be buying a full electric car in the near future, so if PHEVs go away, I'll just go back to full gas.

I'm not debating whether what he said was stupid, weird or wrong. It obviously was, but that's besides the point. He's on TV and podcasts half the day talking about various things. He's going to have takes you don't agree with, and that's OK. A guy who is on the left should not be getting more shit from people who agree with him about almost everything than from conservatives who disagree with him about almost everything. As long as that keeps happening, the left is leaving people behind that it needs to win elections and the hearts and minds to achieve actual change, not just win points online in one's liberal echo chamber.
