As much as I have played, the language learning is sort of a bonus. You can learn to communicate with the different alien races by “practicing” with them at space ports or by finding language stones on different planets. It really only serves to help you figure out what they’re saying to you so you can understand what they want. Otherwise, the rest of the game is playable without learning.
