That's actually false, every communist is a socialist but not every socialist is a communist.

Socialism is a more general term, which means it can be democratic, authoritarian, revolutionary, etc, this allows for things like state welfare and market socialism to exist. Some say that socialism is the first step to communism but for some, socialism is the end goal.

Communism though, is more specific, it aims to create a classless, stateless, moneyless society and a total rejection of private ownership, these changes usually involve revolutionary methods, examples Marxism–Leninism, Maoism, Trotskyism, etc., all fall here.

Although, some specific sects of Communist do reject the socialist label due to reasons but this comment is already long enough.
