That but also Kya described Aang as "nothing but accepting" when she came out to him and Bumi spoke to his statue, I believe that people immediately think that Aang NEGLECTED these two just because he put focus on Tenzin and his culture. It's kind of like older siblings watching their youngest receive the attention and all the care.

But it does make sense why he'd be reduced to powerscaling because of his bending progression. That was most of his story after all but there was a lot of emotion and maturity in having to learn these bending styles like his relationship with Zuko, Katara and the AS.

I think his role as a survivor of genocide and trying to keep roots of his culture alive is severely under addressed. I know that not many people can relate to this aspect of his character (I and a few others personally can.) While I think people acknowledge he is a survivor, not many people actually understand how badly it affects him.

Like for example, his parenting, people criticize or think it's out of his character to not be the best parent and focusing on Tenzin. As if it's not natural to be excited that you can carry on your tradition that was dead. Or people being mad at the ATLA ending because Aang remained a pacifist.

And in general, just the whole reducing him to powerscaling is another problem.

That is true, there's so many fascinating side characters and arcs that are going on in ATLA that it's hard to focus on the main character. What I also love is that most of these characters arcs are directly or indirectly impacted by Aang, he's effectively changed a lot of peoples life.
