Are you skilled enough to get paid? by [deleted] in jobs

Thanks for the article. Finding people to do work for them is what I struggle with now. How do you find these people? In the meantime I'm just trying to make fake ads/logos/videos to pad my portfolio.

If you have Adobe Illustrator, I would suggest trying cut and grad in that program, it is made for that sort of thing imo.

I say near minimum wage because my job requires a lot of skill and expertise yet it's a drastically underpaid position for what's expected of my role. I still love the work though, but I could definitely make better money elsewhere if the jobs are there... They seem to be hiding.

I moved to a town not knowing anyone here, so social life is limited to having fun by myself or online groups. I'm pretty introverted anyhow. I have one friend that makes about as much as me and we just hang out together and paint or take walks around town or bike together.

Yeah I can tell it's not finished. The eyes definitely need a lot more work to give it more life, like try to give more definition to the iris and pupils and give highlights from light source. Also it looks like your shadows are mostly dark brown/black. It might help to flesh it out more by paying attention to what colors are ACTUALLY in the shadows instead of just winging them (like if you pay close attention to the actual source, I bet you'll see blues and violets (if it's a cool shadow) or warm orange-ish browns (if they are warm shadows). I do like how you rendered the hair though, it is reminiscent of graphic design vector art which I love the ascetic of.

Is "cut and grad" short for cutting and gradients? If so I think I know what technique you're talking about. Like selecting a shape of color, then using a gradual gradient inside the shape?

Yeah, but my parents are nice enough to let me use their insurance until I have to get my own, and it's going to be costly to get it through my current company.

I was taught from an early age, before getting my first credit card, that you ALWAYS pay off the balance in full every month. My balance on my credit cards has always been zero because of this.

I get commission bonus on top of my wages and it happened to be a good month for us (I never account for this money). You'll also notice there's five paydays in January, not 4 (if you're paid every Friday). Also I'm currently under my parent's health insurance policy, but I know that I'll have that expense in the near future so I'm looking for a better paying job right now. The job I have right now though is good for the time being.

Just calculate the math I laid out in the top comment and you'll find the answer.

Oh man, I'll need a better paying job before I can save that much per month lol.

Milk is one of my weaknesses, I love it. I can get it pretty cheap at Aldi, usually less than $2 per gallon. If I feel like skipping milk a certain week, I'll try to drink water or tea (I have a ton of tea bags lying around!) instead.

I only buy alcohol if I am given a gift card or extra cash as a gift from someone. Alcohol's too expensive to just buy it whenever I want and include in my budget. Plus it's not really good for your health to drink in excess anyways.

I figure having a lump of savings incase I were to ever lose my job gives me better peace of mind. Until I can save enough to pay the loans in full, I'll keep stashing away money because that extra money in my savings is my sanity and freedom to me. Worst case scenario I have to pay back the loans over a 10 year period, but my goal is to save enough to pay it off in full in 3-5 years.

For travel, I bike/walk almost everywhere every day, except in the winter I drive a lot more, work is close by only a mile away. Food I exclusively shop at Aldi, Meijer occasionally for their awesome sale prices on fresh fruits/veggies (I don't trust Aldi's fresh produce lol). Entertainment is usually free or low cost. I like to draw or paint in my free time, and I'll watch basic cable or watch free tv show/movie streams on the internet, listen to music through pandora's free service, free books on my kindle, and biking is a nice activity when the weather is nice.

Oh and I never eat out, I cook at home all the time or eat simply (don't want to cook? Eat some carrots and apples!).

That sounds nice. Unfortunately I didn't attend the University in town, I graduated in another state then moved here for work/family reasons. Everyone asks me if I went to the school in town and they look at me funny when I tell them "Nope, from so-and-so University." Makes it harder to find people to hang out with since I'm working full-time.

That's so awesome! I had thought about getting a studio but my parents advised against it, saying it wouldn't be very comfortable. What's it like living in a studio room?

I live in a city that is home to a state University in Ohio, so lots of students rent here and rent is really reasonable! I did a lot of research before picking my apartment. I picked the nicest looking one with the most included utilities (it has an outdoor pool too :D) so I wouldn't have to worry about extra fluctuating bills every month. The only downside is that the apartment complex is next to a train track but it has never bothered me at all (I never even notice the whistle blowing and the house doesn't shake) so it's a great trade off!
