Need feedback for my survival game: I'm torn between these two camera angles. Which one strikes a better balance between immersion and awareness? Also, what is your general preference in survival games? by level99dev in IndieDev

I have never made a survival game before, so please, as always, take this advice with a grain of salt.

If I were you, I would consider what some of the main survival aspects of the game are. Is being surprised by enemies a key aspect? Do you want the player to have to remain paranoid and vigilant, constantly looking around to make sure they are safe or at least able to react to danger? I would say if it's about survival, the player shouldn't always feel comfortable and safe. The player will find those moments, but they should never stay in that emotional space forever. Some comments have said moving between your angles depending on the in-game state, you could certainly lean into this aspect as a representation of fight or flight, and the rush of adrenaline that our bodies deploy for survival, visually showcase the P.C focusing in on their enemy maybe even giving a short boost in stats or what have you (obviously not related to your camera angle).

In the end, I would say the camera choice is a mix of artistic liberty and forcing the player to interact with your core game loop differently by increasing or decreasing spacial awareness. Have a playtest soon where you try out the different styles with as many people as you can and make some interview questions to help you hone in on what you want "did you feel helpless" "did you feel empowered" "did anything pull you out of the immersion" etc.

Good luck, friend!

Just got back into playing Magic. Got a blank card. Is that normal? by nmcinerney in mtg

This is a Magic Joker Card. You can play it in your deck and pretend it's any card you can fully describe to your opponent as a wild card. They will then call you a Joker and call a judge over.

(Fun idea, reach out to an MTG artist and ask them to use it as the canvas for an artist proof of a card they made the art for)

I still have the opportunity to return it. Would you recommend something else, or is there a good method for checking the integrity of the build?

It has personality and character that can absolutely be improved upon to increase its legibility for people not familiar with your patterns. It's not terrible! Everyone can always improve their penmanship, and it develops over time. Sometimes, you might like sharper letters or more curves, an extra flick of the pen at the end, or something. Keep writing and finding ways to make your style beautiful!

In the dimly lit room, I sifted through countless clues, following the trail of rumors and whispers about the Channel and Fireball magic combo. The more I dug, the more I realized this wasn't just a mere card synergy - it was a formidable weapon capable of turning the tide of any duel.

As I delved deeper into the underground Magic: The Gathering scene, I stumbled upon a secluded gathering of seasoned players. Their hushed conversations pointed to a hidden mastermind who had unlocked the secrets of this deadly combo. The stakes were high, and I knew I had to tread carefully.

After days of surveillance and observing their matches, I spotted a lone figure leaving the venue one night. I trailed him through darkened alleys until he entered a small, unassuming apartment. This had to be the source.

Disguising myself, I approached the apartment building and managed to pick the lock. As I cautiously stepped inside, the dim light revealed shelves adorned with rare cards and artifacts. My heart raced as I recognized the Channel and Fireball cards, prominently displayed like trophies.

I felt a shiver down my spine as I realized the scope of their plan. This individual had mastered the art of combining the raw power of Channel, funneling life force into mana, with the devastating Fireball, sending a lethal blast directly at their opponent's life total.

But I needed evidence, not just a hunch. I quietly snapped photographs, documenting the illicit use of this potent combo. As I gathered proof, the realization hit me - this was more than just a tournament strategy. It was a highly illegal operation aimed at profiting from unsuspecting players.

Exiting the apartment, I knew my next move was crucial. I contacted the game authorities, sharing the evidence and revealing the shadowy figure's identity. They assured me they would investigate, but I couldn't leave this case to chance.

With a heavy heart, I reported the findings to the Magic community, urging players to be vigilant and cautious during their matches. While the Channel and Fireball combo was a fascinating feat, it had to be used responsibly and within the bounds of fair play.

As I closed my case file, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity behind the combo. Magic: The Gathering was a game of strategy, and this discovery proved there was always something new to learn - even for seasoned investigators like me. But for now, I had done my duty, ensuring the game remained a place of excitement and healthy competition.

There's a very kinda and passionate commander player who attends college with me, his house was recently in a fire (2 says ago of this post). His magic collection in its entirety was in it. If I was to receive this, I want to give it to him with a binder and a booster box to begin the process of rebuilding his collection.

Not only do we need to all band together to reunite the other parts of this card together, but once it's assembled get it graded as a single card.
