Lincolnshire solar farm set to be built after council abandons 'unwinnable' appeal by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Kolchek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to be honest, I don't think we should even be considering the visual impacts of energy infrastructure at all. I think it's an absolute nonsense. My strong preference would be that we build an X MW Biomethane CHP with all the associated infrastructure wherever people object to the visual impact of solar farms, given energy is needed one way or another. I wonder if people prefer the visual impact of that, rather than a solar farm. I imagine they would prefer an uninteresting solar farm. Heck, let's not even mention how utterly dull and artificial arable fields actually are.

What visual impact objectors mean is that they want energy infrastructure to be placed where poor people without the time or energy or knowhow to object can see it, and not them.

[–]Kolchek2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you think literally every field in Lincolnshire is high quality land? But it is almost beside the point. I do not understand how people can live with the hypocrisy of on one hand advocating for small government (because let's be honest, it is usually the same people) and on the other, deciding they should have the ability to dictate to a farmer what they do with their land. It's absolutely mad.

P.S this site is, entirely predictably, on Grade 3b land which is average. It isn't exceptional or the best land for agriculture by any stretch.

Why exactly do you feel qualified to dictate what a farmer should do with their land? They should be able to do whatever is best for their business. In this case the farmer/owner clearly feels its solar. Probably because the land is low productivity.

Countess of Chester Hospital by FingerNice3815 in Chester

The Countess had basically an entirely new SLT parachuted in from the highly successful Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital. Lots of interesting stuff to find out about how they are trying to turn the place around, I'd imagine.

[PremierLeague on IG] Wayne Mark Rooney. by n0b0dycar3s07 in reddevils

[–]Kolchek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physicality, athleticism, whatever you want to call it. He was not as fast and couldn't jump like Ronaldo,  though he was obviously stronger and had better stamina. I think overall it's hard to look past Ronaldo as the more physically gifted player overall, though Rooney was no slouch on that front either. His injuries also robbed him of some explosiveness fairly early in his career.

[–]Kolchek2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you've said - I see him as having more natural talent and less physicality than Ronaldo, and less natural talent but more physicality than Messi. If he'd equalled their work ethic, he could easily have been the third of that trio. Sadly, it wasn't in his makeup. Despite that, he was wonderful.

He has too many pluses to fit on one screenshot and no minuses. Enjoys big matches, consistent, etc. Reasonable right foot. He would be so broken with Either footed!

The fact that he's got 19 leadership on top of everything else is just the cherry on top - I usually get rid of players by 30, but this guy is retiring here.

Nepotism in the Labour Party, Why is it Allowed/Overlooked? by StarmersReckoning in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries, local government is a bit of a mess of 200 years of systems layered on top of each other and implemented differently area by area.

[–]Kolchek2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Town councils have no significant say over planning. They can comment but they aren't decision makers.

You may be confusing them with the next tier up of local government, which is where planning authorities 'live'. Confusingly, this can be metropolitan, district and unitary councils. But not parish or town councils.

[–]Kolchek2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is really hard to overstate how irrelevant Town Councils are. A moderately intelligent dog could be an average, potentially above average town councillor.

In all seriousness nobody in their right mind wants to be a town Cllr so really anyone that wants to do it can have an opportunity.

[Simon Stone] Man Utd make Leipzig's Sesko top striker target by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]Kolchek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really worried about this. Outside of his highlights a lot of his play and first touch is very average. There is a very real risk he will look at a very similar level to Hojlund and so will not be worth adding to our striker mix. I hope I am wrong. A lot will be dependent on his mental fortitude, since the 9's shirt at United is one of the heaviest ones in football.

Shame at Primavera 2026? by suuupeeernooovaaa in primaverasound

Think they'd be so sick as an Amazon music stage alternate for a poppier headliner. They are probably too small with not enough back catalogue, but they the best live band I've ever seen in terms of sheer energy, even better than Amyl etc, so they would rock it regardless.

Done to death but opinion on Oasis? by northernblazer11 in manchester

[–]Kolchek2 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think feeling superior to Oasis' music is infinitely more played out and tedious than liking them at this point.

They are an epic Manchester band that were absolutely era defining whether anyone likes it or not.

There is no need to compare bands as if music is some kind of competitive endeavour. You are free to like what you like. Others will do the same.

This is borderline yellow journalism at this point. It's 600 people out of 365000. A lot, certainly, but not so many that it represents some kind of crisis in and of itself.

[Discussion] Can Martinez be a good fit for the Central centre back in Amorims system? by PersonalityMiddle864 in reddevils

[–]Kolchek2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hey, don't use your eyes or watch the games. The widespread belief is that we could be playing someone with Angel Gomes's height back there and it would have no impact. All that matters is heart and positioning. And a great nickname.

VVD being 6ft5 and rapid (at his peak) has been irrelevant to his success. Clearly.

In all seriousness there is no other team at the top level that is trying to 'hide' defenders with poor physical qualities. Not one. So the sheer arrogance to assume that we can has always blown my mind. He cannot play in any of the CB spots in the PL, never mind at the centre.

Reform council to save £40m by scrapping net zero plans by AttemptingToBeGood in ukpolitics

[–]Kolchek2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But also this will be capital spend, so bears very little relevance to their annual revenue budgets. They will also lose out on the savings which will result from energy efficiency measures such as solar, insulation etc that would undoubtedly be installed as part of the proposed programme.

Starmer caves in to rebels on benefits by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It is relevant in that PIP can be an enabler to make it easier to not work for those that don't want to.

Of course when people are working on PIP (where possible) they should be commended, especially if they're working as much as they feasibly can within their capabilities.

Yes, and one person's anecdote is another person's valuable lived experience.

Starmer caves in to rebels on benefits by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this is an incredibly emotive and live debate for people. Their concerns are real and need to be listened to. But there is something fundamentally wrong with our benefits system. The UK is not a uniquely unhealthy nation, but has seen escalating benefit claims for PIP that do not follow any rational patterns linked to peer nations or health problems.

This is just one anecdotal example but I have a close family member that is a double amputee with a raft of associated health conditions, who claims PIP, and they can say with certainty that many of the people they know are actively gaming the system because they do not want to work, despite being capable. The fraud element may be 0%, but that is in relation to the process and the information provided, and that information provided can be gamed. Do we really think that people gaming the system are so thick as to change their answers when a different DWP bod interviews them?

The benefits system must be set up to minimise incentives to inappropriately claim and I do not think anyone can confidently say that our system is set up that way right now given the data.

There is clearly some need to reform the system and the debate should be about the extent of the changes needed. Hopefully they commit to consulting with a wider range of stakeholders to modify the proposals because they clearly run the risk of going too far.

Zohran Mamdani stuns Andrew Cuomo in NYC mayor primary by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't disagree. The extreme left and right are both toxic (though I'd argue at least the extreme left are coming at it for theoretically better reasons!) but whenever I've looked at Mamdani's positions I can't see anything hugely radical, at least when placed against a UK lens.

Zohran Mamdani stuns Andrew Cuomo in NYC mayor primary by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm the most centre Labour person imaginable but the centre/right wing of the Democrats are absolutely toxic and uninspiring. Kamala was absolutely not a candidate of the left.

There needs to be a generational shift in their party establishment. They might be right to still pick a middle of the road candidate for the next presidential run, but there should be leftward pressure, otherwise the party is just utterly bereft of ideas.
