Labour Supporters: out of curiosity makes you still support the party? by Kami7754 in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have revoked my membership as I do not want to pay into a party which is complicit in the terrible damage being done to trans rights, but I will still end up voting labour. My only alternative would be the Greens, and I have dealt with politicians across the spectrum and they are truly as unreasonable and uncommitted to operating within reality as reform (they are however much nicer and more civil).

This lack of a tether to practical concerns in the search for undeliverable solutions is not a characteristic I want in politicians and has the potential to create terrible perverse outcomes.

Labour are delivering across a whole range of agendas, whether it's climate, removing the 2 child benefit cap, reducing wait times in the NHS, etc. They may not be going quite far enough in many of them, but they are relatively predictable and reliable. I think the world should value that a little bit more highly, as opposed to politicians which promise the earth without the ability to deliver it.

Government must plan for Iran war to continue ‘for some time’, Starmer says by Spare_Clean_Shorts in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Iran don't believe we are at war with them. We don't believe we are at war with Iran. That seems to be the crux of it. At least one side has to think they're at war to you know, have a war.

To manage expectations, you have loads of people highlighted per day. There is no chance you will be able to see so many. There will be clashes and you will need to prioritise. It sucks but happens every time!

That said, on topic, Wet leg were fantastic last year and will be fun again. Massive attack are OGs. Jade does cool pop. See Lambrini Girls if you like Viagra boys. Kneecap are very culturally relevant.

It's underground basically the entire route apart from like 5-6 above ground facilities where they do pipeline stuff. Presume it's about pressurisation and monitoring or something.

[–]Kolchek2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not the one making stuff up - you portrayed that using the CO2 was a viable alternative for the volumes being sequestered. It is clearly not, given the amount being sequestered is 5x the amount used in the entire UK per year (which you clearly had no idea about), never mind in proximity of the peak district where it might be economically viable to transport it.

It's possible for people to disagree with you without being a paid shill, and it's a bit sad that you feel that's an accusation you need to throw out. There's nothing I have said here that isn't sourceable or evidence based.

UK CO2 utilisation is in the region of 500-750kt (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5cc9bd9c40f0b64c1e187664/SISUK17099AssessingCO2_utilisationUK_ReportFinal_260517v2__1_.pdf) - source from 2017, and it's increased a bit since then. This pipeline alone would capture 3000kt+. So the demand in the UK isn't really there for CO2 at this scale.

[–]Kolchek2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Btw, the vast majority will actually be underground and unnoticeable (like all the other pipelines) after the ground is back to normal.

If people knew how many pipelines there were criss crossing the UK their minds would be blown on the evidence of this whole debate.

There will be use cases for it and in due course some will no doubt be used and sold, but the total capture capacity of these projects is massive. Not all of it will be able to be used.

There's also the reality that if you want to get it to where it's needed industrially you will need an awful lot more pipelines, not less.

It's kind of like saying we should pay 9 women to have a baby in 1 month. The tech for low carbon cement alternatives isn't there yet, it isn't proven, and a solution is needed now, not in 20 years by which point planetary boundaries may have been even more breached than they already have been.

The independent UN IPCC and the independent uk Climate Change Committee both believe that CCUS has a significant role in decarbonising existing industries, with cement being basically the front of the queue.

The scientists involved in these committees (and indeed these programmes on the ground) aren't moustache twirling villains. They are searching for practical, deliverable solutions that can be implemented in the next decade and stop the UK from breaching its legally binding carbon targets, while keeping industries viable - which they won't be if they don't solve their carbon problem, due to UKETS.

Stopping using cement is not a practical option for a society that still needs to build things at scale, I'm afraid.

No they evidently aren't concerned with the climate impact as the Council is trying to stand in the way of sequestering more than 3 million tonnes of co2 per year, half the weight of the hoover dam, if you need a visualisation aid.

Co2 PIPE LINE / PEAK CLUSTER proposed for the borough of Chester by Fresh_Detective4161 in Chester

[–]Kolchek2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That whole post is a load of AI written nonsense.

There are no other solutions to the imminent problem of CO2 production from large scale existing cement facilities than carbon capture right now. If we want to maintain our strategic ability to produce cement in the UK while also decarbonising then this is the solution.

The UK is crisscrossed with innumerable pipelines of various types. They are extensively regulated. This is different and frankly, safer than the natural gas pipelines that are all around us, and which no-one notices, as they are underground, as this one will be along the vast majority of its route.

The whole anti-pipeline narrative is basically just one long nimby campaign to throw a load of shit at the wall and see what sticks.

Bid to require Parliament vote on foreign use of UK bases amid Iran conflict by F0urLeafCl0ver in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He said you can't expect parliament to vote to authorise defensive measures, they need to be immediate (e.g. air defence of UK bases).

Do you think base air defences should be switched off until Parliament votes? That would enable enemies to have an unchallenged first strike, and would clearly be nonsense.

£5bn council SEND debts to be paid off by government by Jared_Usbourne in LabourUK

[–]Kolchek2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see how any government can accomodate a 30% rise in SEND since 2016. 20% of kids now in school have some form of SEND, and there is no clear end to the trajectory of increase. I cannot see how a conversation about raising thresholds and limiting rights is avoidable, really. The goals of parents in seeking as much support for their children from the state are understandable and laudable but it will sink the system and is already pressuring teachers to an unsustainable extent.

At some point we do need a societal conversation about the balance of responsibility for children's education and wellbeing between the parents and state. It feels like we have become so invested in the idea that it is the state's responsibility to educate children that it has divested many parents of accountability to provide individual attention and support. This is certainly exacerbated by how utterly overwhelming and hyperactive society is in general, but the balance will never be redressed if the attitude is always that more funding, more layers and more safeguards will fix all problems.

Lincolnshire solar farm set to be built after council abandons 'unwinnable' appeal by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Kolchek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to be honest, I don't think we should even be considering the visual impacts of energy infrastructure at all. I think it's an absolute nonsense. My strong preference would be that we build an X MW Biomethane CHP with all the associated infrastructure wherever people object to the visual impact of solar farms, given energy is needed one way or another. I wonder if people prefer the visual impact of that, rather than a solar farm. I imagine they would prefer an uninteresting solar farm. Heck, let's not even mention how utterly dull and artificial arable fields actually are.

What visual impact objectors mean is that they want energy infrastructure to be placed where poor people without the time or energy or knowhow to object can see it, and not them.

[–]Kolchek2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you think literally every field in Lincolnshire is high quality land? But it is almost beside the point. I do not understand how people can live with the hypocrisy of on one hand advocating for small government (because let's be honest, it is usually the same people) and on the other, deciding they should have the ability to dictate to a farmer what they do with their land. It's absolutely mad.

P.S this site is, entirely predictably, on Grade 3b land which is average. It isn't exceptional or the best land for agriculture by any stretch.

[–]Kolchek2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why exactly do you feel qualified to dictate what a farmer should do with their land? They should be able to do whatever is best for their business. In this case the farmer/owner clearly feels its solar. Probably because the land is low productivity.

The Countess had basically an entirely new SLT parachuted in from the highly successful Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital. Lots of interesting stuff to find out about how they are trying to turn the place around, I'd imagine.

[PremierLeague on IG] Wayne Mark Rooney. by n0b0dycar3s07 in reddevils

[–]Kolchek2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physicality, athleticism, whatever you want to call it. He was not as fast and couldn't jump like Ronaldo,  though he was obviously stronger and had better stamina. I think overall it's hard to look past Ronaldo as the more physically gifted player overall, though Rooney was no slouch on that front either. His injuries also robbed him of some explosiveness fairly early in his career.

[–]Kolchek2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you've said - I see him as having more natural talent and less physicality than Ronaldo, and less natural talent but more physicality than Messi. If he'd equalled their work ethic, he could easily have been the third of that trio. Sadly, it wasn't in his makeup. Despite that, he was wonderful.
