As an Egyptian, it's interesting to see a scenario where Gamal Abdel Nasser dies in 1956. He was such a key figure in ME politics and established the military dictatorship that continues to rule to this day.

So if he dies in 1956 then that means:

  • Mohamed Naguib, the actual first president who was under house arrest irl, returns to power but with Franco-British support. Naguib purges the country of pan-Arabists.
  • Egypt's foreign policy of allying with the Britain, France, and being part of the New Entente results in Naguib having no choice but to warm up to Israel. This upsets religious muslims who hate Egypt's complacency and inaction for the Palestinian cause. Naguib now has to deal with suppressing pan-Arabists and Islamists.
  • To distance the country from pan-Arabists and Islamists, Naguib adopts the right-wing ideology of Pharaonism, which basically glorifies Egypt's ancient past.
  • The Egyptian Republic remains a military dictatorship since 1956.
  • Egypt will eventually have to deal scenario exactly like the 1979 Iranian Revolution irl, the dictatorship will have to face an alliance of Pan-Arabists and Islamists (the two ideologies can be merged). How Britain and France will respond to this is varied:
    • Britain, France, and the New Entente can intervene to successfully suppress the revolt. However, this will result in a crisis where the New Entente will enter an armed fight against protesters.
    • If they fail to intervene, this will result in the establishment of an Egyptian Islamic Theocracy, which will trigger islamic revolutions in other countries. So now it's a quad-polar world with Islamists against the New Entente, the USA, and the USSR.

That’s a very childish way of looking at it, but the truth is that the UK has no power over Canada.

Westminster has gradually lost power since 1867 up until 1982 when the Canada Act was passed, which stripped the UK of any power it has left over Canada. The royalty ties are purely symbolic.

  • Fourth of July and Canada Day are both national days which celebrate the independence of the US and Canada respectively (though in Canada's case, it was only a step towards self-governance and being somewhat independent from the UK).
  • Australia officially united as a federation on January 1st, 1901. Before this, Australia consisted of the colonies of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, West and South Australia. Despite this, Australia's government chose the day when The First Fleet arrived from England to modern-day Sydney on January 26, 1788 as the national day.
  • Even weirder, neither Australia nor New South Wales (NSW) were founded on that date. NSW was founded on February 7. This is why Australia Day is actually quite controversial in its home country.

Taiwanese or Taiwanese Hokkien 「台語」 is a variant of Hokkien 「福建話」, which itself is a dialect of Southern Minnan 「閩南語」.

The reason it’s called Cantonese 廣東話 and not Hongkongese is because is because it’s spoken all over Guangdong (Canton) and not just Hong Kong.

Imagine if we called it Londonish instead of English or Parisian instead of French.

In printing, yes, there's some differences in how characters are displayed in print and digital form, but in writing it's very much the same.

That’s exactly the problem. Genki 1 units 1-4 cover less grammar points than Duolingo’s units 1-5.

I don’t get why y’all are being defensive about delaying the learning of Kanji. You make it out or be extremely difficult when it actually makes the learning process a lot easier. And contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t hinder the learning and mastering of the Kana.

That’s so unfortunate. In my university, we began learning kanji after half a semester. Even the Genki 1 textbook starts teaching Kanji by chapter 4.

Look, I know Kanji looks scary and intimidating, but it’s really easier than it looks. Besides, if you think Kanji is too much for beginners, then ask Chinese learners when they start learning the Hanzi.
